Development of an integrated remote monitoring technique and its application to para-stressing bridge system
Bridge monitoring system via information technology is capable of providing more accurate knowledge of bridge performance characteristics than traditional strategies. This paper describes not only an integrated Internet monitoring system that consists of a stand-alone monitoring system (SMS) and a Web-based Internet monitoring system (IMS) for bridge maintenance but also its application to para-stressing bridge system as an intelligent structure. IMS, as a Web-based system, is capable of addressing the remote monitoring by introducing measuring information derived from SMS into the system through Internet or intranet connected by either PHS or LAN. Moreover, the key functions of IMS such as data management system, condition assessment, and decision making with the proposed system are also introduced in this paper. Another goal of this study is to establish the framework of a para-stressing bridge system which is an intelligent bridge by integrating the bridge monitoring information into the system to control the bridge performance automatically.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
An Architecture for Integrated Intelligence in Urban Management using Cloud Computing
With the emergence of new methodologies and technologies it has now become
possible to manage large amounts of environmental sensing data and apply new
integrated computing models to acquire information intelligence. This paper
advocates the application of cloud capacity to support the information,
communication and decision making needs of a wide variety of stakeholders in
the complex business of the management of urban and regional development. The
complexity lies in the interactions and impacts embodied in the concept of the
urban-ecosystem at various governance levels. This highlights the need for more
effective integrated environmental management systems. This paper offers a
user-orientated approach based on requirements for an effective management of
the urban-ecosystem and the potential contributions that can be supported by
the cloud computing community. Furthermore, the commonality of the influence of
the drivers of change at the urban level offers the opportunity for the cloud
computing community to develop generic solutions that can serve the needs of
hundreds of cities from Europe and indeed globally.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Smart Asset Management for Electric Utilities: Big Data and Future
This paper discusses about future challenges in terms of big data and new
technologies. Utilities have been collecting data in large amounts but they are
hardly utilized because they are huge in amount and also there is uncertainty
associated with it. Condition monitoring of assets collects large amounts of
data during daily operations. The question arises "How to extract information
from large chunk of data?" The concept of "rich data and poor information" is
being challenged by big data analytics with advent of machine learning
techniques. Along with technological advancements like Internet of Things
(IoT), big data analytics will play an important role for electric utilities.
In this paper, challenges are answered by pathways and guidelines to make the
current asset management practices smarter for the future.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, Proceedings of 12th World Congress on
