Quality and robustness improvement for real world industrial systems using a fuzzy particle swarm optimization
This paper presents a novel fuzzy particle swarm optimization with cross-mutated (FPSOCM) operation, where a fuzzy logic system developed based on the knowledge of swarm intelligence is proposed to determine the inertia weight for the swarm movement of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the control parameter of a newly introduced cross-mutated operation. Hence, the inertia weight of the PSO can be adaptive with respect to the search progress. The new cross-mutated operation intends to drive the solution to escape from local optima. A suite of benchmark test functions are employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed FPSOCM. Experimental results show empirically that the FPSOCM performs better than the existing hybrid PSO methods in terms of solution quality, robustness, and convergence rate. The proposed FPSOCM is evaluated by improving the quality and robustness of two real world industrial systems namely economic load dispatch system and self-provisioning systems for communication network services. These two systems are employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed FPSOCM as they are multi-optima and non-convex problems. The performance of FPSOCM is found to be significantly better than that of the existing hybrid PSO methods in a statistical sense. These results demonstrate that the proposed FPSOCM is a good candidate for solving product or service engineering problems which have multi-optima or non-convex natures
Cloud Service Selection System Approach based on QoS Model: A Systematic Review
The Internet of Things (IoT) has received a lot of interest from researchers recently. IoT is seen as a component of the Internet of Things, which will include billions of intelligent, talkative "things" in the coming decades. IoT is a diverse, multi-layer, wide-area network composed of a number of network links. The detection of services and on-demand supply are difficult in such networks, which are comprised of a variety of resource-limited devices. The growth of service computing-related fields will be aided by the development of new IoT services. Therefore, Cloud service composition provides significant services by integrating the single services. Because of the fast spread of cloud services and their different Quality of Service (QoS), identifying necessary tasks and putting together a service model that includes specific performance assurances has become a major technological problem that has caused widespread concern. Various strategies are used in the composition of services i.e., Clustering, Fuzzy, Deep Learning, Particle Swarm Optimization, Cuckoo Search Algorithm and so on. Researchers have made significant efforts in this field, and computational intelligence approaches are thought to be useful in tackling such challenges. Even though, no systematic research on this topic has been done with specific attention to computational intelligence. A Multi-objective Optimization Model for Virtual Machine Mapping in Cloud Data Centres
© 2016 IEEE. Modern cloud computing environments exploit virtualization for efficient resource management to reduce computational cost and energy budget. Virtual machine (VM) migration is a technique that enables flexible resource allocation and increases the computation power and communication capability within cloud data centers. VM migration helps cloud providers to successfully achieve various resource management objectives such as load balancing, power management, fault tolerance, and system maintenance. However, the VM migration process can affect the performance of applications unless it is supported by smart optimization methods. This paper presents a multi-objective optimization model to address this issue. The objectives are to minimize power consumption, maximize resource utilization (or minimize idle resources), and minimize VM transfer time. Fuzzy particle swarm optimization (PSO), which improves the efficiency of conventional PSO by using fuzzy logic systems, is relied upon to solve the optimization problem. The model is implemented in a cloud simulator to investigate its performance, and the results verify the performance improvement of the proposed model
Bio-inspired computation for big data fusion, storage, processing, learning and visualization: state of the art and future directions
This overview gravitates on research achievements that have recently emerged from the confluence between Big Data technologies and bio-inspired computation. A manifold of reasons can be identified for the profitable synergy between these two paradigms, all rooted on the adaptability, intelligence and robustness that biologically inspired principles can provide to technologies aimed to manage, retrieve, fuse and process Big Data efficiently. We delve into this research field by first analyzing in depth the existing literature, with a focus on advances reported in the last few years. This prior literature analysis is complemented by an identification of the new trends and open challenges in Big Data that remain unsolved to date, and that can be effectively addressed by bio-inspired algorithms. As a second contribution, this work elaborates on how bio-inspired algorithms need to be adapted for their use in a Big Data context, in which data fusion becomes crucial as a previous step to allow processing and mining several and potentially heterogeneous data sources. This analysis allows exploring and comparing the scope and efficiency of existing approaches across different problems and domains, with the purpose of identifying new potential applications and research niches. Energy-Efficient Virtual Machine Placement using Enhanced Firefly Algorithm
The consolidation of the virtual machines (VMs) helps to optimise the usage of resources and hence reduces the energy consumption in a cloud data centre. VM placement plays an important part in the consolidation of the VMs. The researchers have developed various algorithms for VM placement considering the optimised energy consumption. However, these algorithms lack the use of exploitation mechanism efficiently. This paper addresses VM placement issues by proposing two meta-heuristic algorithms namely, the enhanced modified firefly algorithm (MFF) and the hierarchical cluster based modified firefly algorithm (HCMFF), presenting the comparative analysis relating to energy optimisation. The comparisons are made against the existing honeybee (HB) algorithm, honeybee cluster based technique (HCT) and the energy consumption results of all the participating algorithms confirm that the proposed HCMFF is more efficient than the other algorithms. The simulation study shows that HCMFF consumes 12% less energy than honeybee algorithm, 6% less than HCT algorithm and 2% less than original firefly. The usage of the appropriate algorithm can help in efficient usage of energy in cloud computing

Hadoop performance modeling and job optimization for big data analytics
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonBig data has received a momentum from both academia and industry. The MapReduce model has emerged into a major computing model in support of big data analytics. Hadoop, which is an open source implementation of the MapReduce model, has been widely taken up by the community. Cloud service providers such as Amazon EC2 cloud have now supported Hadoop user applications. However, a key challenge is that the cloud service providers do not a have resource provisioning mechanism to satisfy user jobs with deadline requirements. Currently, it is solely the user responsibility to estimate the require amount of resources for their job running in a public cloud. This thesis presents a Hadoop performance model that accurately estimates the execution duration of a job and further provisions the required amount of resources for a job to be completed within a deadline. The proposed model employs Locally Weighted Linear Regression (LWLR) model to estimate execution time of a job and Lagrange Multiplier technique for resource provisioning to satisfy user job with a given deadline. The performance of the propose model is extensively evaluated in both in-house Hadoop cluster and Amazon EC2 Cloud. Experimental results show that the proposed model is highly accurate in job execution estimation and jobs are completed within the required deadlines following on the resource provisioning scheme of the proposed model. In addition, the Hadoop framework has over 190 configuration parameters and some of them have significant effects on the performance of a Hadoop job. Manually setting the optimum values for these parameters is a challenging task and also a time consuming process. This thesis presents optimization works that enhances the performance of Hadoop by automatically tuning its parameter values. It employs Gene Expression Programming (GEP) technique to build an objective function that represents the performance of a job and the correlation among the configuration parameters. For the purpose of optimization, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is employed to find automatically an optimal or a near optimal configuration settings. The performance of the proposed work is intensively evaluated on a Hadoop cluster and the experimental results show that the proposed work enhances the performance of Hadoop significantly compared with the default settings.Abdul Wali Khan University Marda
Self-Learning Cloud Controllers: Fuzzy Q-Learning for Knowledge Evolution
Cloud controllers aim at responding to application demands by automatically
scaling the compute resources at runtime to meet performance guarantees and
minimize resource costs. Existing cloud controllers often resort to scaling
strategies that are codified as a set of adaptation rules. However, for a cloud
provider, applications running on top of the cloud infrastructure are more or
less black-boxes, making it difficult at design time to define optimal or
pre-emptive adaptation rules. Thus, the burden of taking adaptation decisions
often is delegated to the cloud application. Yet, in most cases, application
developers in turn have limited knowledge of the cloud infrastructure. In this
paper, we propose learning adaptation rules during runtime. To this end, we
introduce FQL4KE, a self-learning fuzzy cloud controller. In particular, FQL4KE
learns and modifies fuzzy rules at runtime. The benefit is that for designing
cloud controllers, we do not have to rely solely on precise design-time
knowledge, which may be difficult to acquire. FQL4KE empowers users to specify
cloud controllers by simply adjusting weights representing priorities in system
goals instead of specifying complex adaptation rules. The applicability of
FQL4KE has been experimentally assessed as part of the cloud application
framework ElasticBench. The experimental results indicate that FQL4KE
outperforms our previously developed fuzzy controller without learning
mechanisms and the native Azure auto-scaling
Implementation of Cognitive Mapping Algorithm for Robot Navigation System
Abstract—Mobile robot is a construction of robot that is
equipped with wheel to move around its environment in
finishing its specific task. Robot will be given some algorithm for certain task. In this project, we are going to build the cognitive mapping algorithm that can be implemented to the mobile robot. This mobile robot will be given some inputs which are horizontal and vertical value and start and goal point and a task which is to move from start point to goal point. Some obstacles are also located in the arena and the mobile robot must be able to avoid any given obstacles to reach the goal point. After doing all implementation, finally, some comparison between robot mapping and robot edge follower will be done to observe the differences between these algorithms in term of time and path needed
