    The variability of urban safety performance functions for different road elements: an Italian case study

    Background: Urban safety performance functions are used to predict crash frequencies, mostly based on Negative Binomial (NB) count models. They could be differentiated for considering homogeneous subsets of segments/intersections and different predictors. Materials and methods: The main research questions concerned: a) finding the best possible subsets for segments and intersections for safety modelling, by discussing the related problems and inquiring into the variability of predictors within the subsets; b) comparing the modelling results with the existing literature to highlight common trends and/or main differences; c) assessing the importance of additional crash predictors, besides traditional variables. In the context of a National research project, traffic volumes, geometric, control and additional variables were collected for road segments and intersections in the City of Bari, Italy, with 1500 fatal+injury related crashes (2012–2016). Six NB models were developed for: one/two-way homogeneous segments, three/four-legged, signalized/unsignalized intersections. Results: Crash predictors greatly vary within the different subsets considered. The effect of vertical signs on minor roads/driveways, critical sight distance, cycle crossings, pavement/markings maintenance was specifically discussed. Some common trends but also differences in both types and effect of crash predictors were found by comparing results with literature. Conclusion: The disaggregation of urban crash prediction models by considering different subsets of segments and intersections helps in revealing the specific influence of some predictors. Local characteristics may influence the relationships between well-established crash predictors and crash frequencies. A significant part of the urban crash frequency variability remains unexplained, thus encouraging research on this topic

    The Hierarchical Control Method for Coordinating a Group of Connected Vehicles on Urban Roads

    Safety, mobility and environmental impact are the three major challenges in today\u27s transportation system. As the advances in wireless communication and vehicle automation technologies, they have rapidly led to the emergence and development of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). We can expect fully CAVs by 2030. The CAV technologies offer another solution for the issues we are dealing with in the current transportation system. In the meanwhile, urban roads are one of the most important part in the transportation network. Urban roads are characterized by multiple interconnected intersections. They are more complicated than highway traffic, because the vehicles on the urban roads are moving in multiple directions with higher relative velocity. Most of the traffic accidents happened at intersections and the intersections are the major contribution to the traffic congestions. Our urban road infrastructures are also becoming more intelligent. Sensor-embedded roadways are continuously gathering traffic data from passing vehicles. Our smart vehicles are meeting intelligent roads. However, we have not taken the fully advantages of the data rich traffic environment provided by the connected vehicle technologies and intelligent road infrastructures. The objective of this research is to develop a coordination control strategy for a group of connected vehicles under intelligent traffic environment, which can guide the vehicles passing through the intersections and make smart lane change decisions with the objective of improving overall fuel economy and traffic mobility. The coordination control strategy should also be robust to imperfect connectivity conditions with various connected vehicle penetration rate. This dissertation proposes a hierarchical control method to coordinate a group of connected vehicles travelling on urban roads with intersections. The dissertation includes four parts of the application of our proposed method: First, we focus on the coordination of the connected vehicles on the multiple interconnected unsignalized intersection roads, where the traffic signals are removed and the collision avoidance at the intersection area relays on the communication and cooperation of the connected vehicles and intersection controllers. Second, a fuel efficient hierarchical control method is proposed to control the connected vehicles travel on the signalized intersection roads. With the signal phase and timing (SPAT) information, our proposed approach is able to help the connected vehicles minimize red light idling and improve the fuel economy at the same time. Third, the research is extended form single lane to multiple lane, where the connected vehicle discretionary and cooperative mandatory lane change have been explored. Finally, we have analysis the real-world implementation potential of our proposed algorithm including the communication delay and real-time implementation analysis

    Dynamic Vehicular Trajectory Optimization for Bottleneck Mitigation and Safety Improvement

    Traffic bottleneck is defined as a disruption of traffic flow through a freeway or an arterial, which can be divided as two categories: stationary bottleneck and moving bottleneck. The stationary bottleneck is mainly formed by the lane drops in the multi-lane roadways, while the moving bottleneck are due to the very slowing moving vehicles which disrupt the traffic flow. Traffic bottlenecks not only impact the mobility, but also potentially cause safety issues. Traditional strategies for eliminating bottlenecks mainly focus on expanding supply including road widening, green interval lengthening and optimization of intersection channelization. In addition, a few macroscopic methods are also made to optimize the traffic demand such as routing optimization, but these studies have some drawbacks due to the limitations of times and methodologies. Therefore, this research utilizes the Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) technology to develop several cooperative trajectory optimization models for mitigating mobility and safety impact caused by the urban bottlenecks. The multi-phases algorithms is developed to help solve the model, where a multi-stage-based nonlinear programming procedure is developed in the first phase to search trajectories that eliminate the conflicts in the bottleneck and minimize the travel time and the remaining ones refine the trajectories with a mixed integer linear programming to minimize idling time of vehicles, so that fuel consumption and emissions can be lowered down. Sensitivity analyses are also conducted towards those models and they imply that several indices may significantly impact the effectiveness and even cause the models lose efficacy under extreme values. Various illustrative examples and sensitivity analyses are provided to validate the proposed models. Results indicate that (a) the model is effective to mitigate the mobility and safety impact of bottleneck under the appropriate environment; (b) the model could simultaneously optimize the trajectories of vehicles to lower down fuel consumption and emissions; (c) Some environment indices may significantly impact the models, and even cause the model to lose efficacy under extreme values. Application of the developed models under a real-world case illustrates its capability of providing informative quantitative measures to support decisions in designing, maintaining, and operating the intelligent transportation management
