    A NOVEL APPROACH FOR DETECTION FAULT IN THE AIRCRAFT EXTERIOR BODY USING IMAGE PROCESSING

    The primary objective of this thesis is to develop innovative techniques for the inspection and maintenance of aircraft structures. We aim to streamline the entire process by utilizing images to detect potential defects in the aircraft body and comparing them to properly functioning images of the aircraft. This enables us to determine whether a specific section of the aircraft is faulty or not. We achieve this by employing image processing to train a model capable of identifying faulty images. The image processing methodology we use involves the use of images of both defective and operational parts of the aircraft\u27s exterior. These images undergo a preprocessing phase that preserves valuable details. During the training period, a new image of the same section of the aircraft is used to validate the model. After processing, the algorithm grades the image as faulty or normal. To facilitate our study, we rely on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) approach. This technique collects distinguishing features from a single patch created by the frame segmentation of a CNN kernel. Furthermore, we use various filters to process the images using the image processing toolbox available in Python. In our initial trials, we observed that the CNN model struggled with the overfitting of the faulty class. To address this, we applied image augmentation by converting a small dataset of 87 images to an augmented dataset of 4000 images. After passing the data through multiple convolutional layers and executing multiple epochs, our proposed model achieved an impressive training accuracy of 98.28%. In addition, we designed a GUI-based interface that allows users to input an image and view the results in terms of faulty or normal. Finally, we propose that the application of this research in the field of robotics would be an ideal area for future work

    Computer vision for bird strike prevention

    Collisions with birds cause damage to aircraft and in some cases can even cause air travel accidents. According to data from international organizations such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the radar-based tools currently used to address this problem do not solve it, as there is no indication of a decrease in the number of bird strikes. Early detection and notification to pilots of the presence of birds is key to trying to minimize the possibility that bird impacts can occur. The objective of this project is to improve bird detection capacity in the airport environment. To achieve this goal, this work proposes that the solution could be the use of artificial intelligence based devices and computer vision. To test this hypothesis, a model based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) is selected, trained and deployed on a device for testing. To do this, research is carried out on the different strategies used to solve problems with artificial intelligence and the performance of pre-trained classifier and detector models available. To select the computer board where the model will be deployed, a discussion of Raspberry Pi¿s market performance is made. A collection of bird images is made for training the model. The prototype will finally consist of deploying the model on a Raspberry Pi that through a script in Python programming language is able to automatically notice birds in the real world using a camera connected to the Raspberry Pi. If any detection occurs, the model is capable of making a notification that could serve to anticipate impacts and thus allow appropriate preventive measures to be taken beforehand. In conclusion, this technology shows great potential to support existing solutions today. Theoretical results with validation images show accuracy and recall parameters above 90% but experimental tests with the prototype do not allow for a conclusive judgment due to limitations regarding the training data set

    A Systematic Literature Survey of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Based Structural Health Monitoring

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being employed in a multitude of civil applications owing to their ease of use, low maintenance, affordability, high-mobility, and ability to hover. UAVs are being utilized for real-time monitoring of road traffic, providing wireless coverage, remote sensing, search and rescue operations, delivery of goods, security and surveillance, precision agriculture, and civil infrastructure inspection. They are the next big revolution in technology and civil infrastructure, and it is expected to dominate more than $45 billion market value. The thesis surveys the UAV assisted Structural Health Monitoring or SHM literature over the last decade and categorize UAVs based on their aerodynamics, payload, design of build, and its applications. Further, the thesis presents the payload product line to facilitate the SHM tasks, details the different applications of UAVs exploited in the last decade to support civil structures, and discusses the critical challenges faced in UASHM applications across various domains. Finally, the thesis presents two artificial neural network-based structural damage detection models and conducts a detailed performance evaluation on multiple platforms like edge computing and cloud computing
