    On the Value of Online Learning for Radar Waveform Selection

    This paper attempts to characterize the kinds of physical scenarios in which an online learning-based cognitive radar is expected to reliably outperform a fixed rule-based waveform selection strategy, as well as the converse. We seek general insights through an examination of two decision-making scenarios, namely dynamic spectrum access and multiple-target tracking. The radar scene is characterized by inducing a state-space model and examining the structure of its underlying Markov state transition matrix, in terms of entropy rate and diagonality. It is found that entropy rate is a strong predictor of online learning-based waveform selection, while diagonality is a better predictor of fixed rule-based waveform selection. We show that these measures can be used to predict first and second-order stochastic dominance relationships, which can allow system designers to make use of simple decision rules instead of more cumbersome learning approaches under certain conditions. We validate our findings through numerical results for each application and provide guidelines for future implementations.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures.     Collaborative Estimation in Distributed Sensor Networks

    Networks of smart ultra-portable devices are already indispensable in our lives, augmenting our senses and connecting our lives through real time processing and communication of sensory (e.g., audio, video, location) inputs. Though usually hidden from the user\u27s sight, the engineering of these devices involves fierce tradeoffs between energy availability (battery sizes impact portability) and signal processing / communication capability (which impacts the smartness of the devices). The goal of this dissertation is to provide a fundamental understanding and characterization of these tradeoffs in the context of a sensor network, where the goal is to estimate a common signal by coordinating a multitude of battery-powered sensor nodes. Most of the research so far has been based on two key assumptions -- distributed processing and temporal independence -- that lend analytical tractability to the problem but otherwise are often found lacking in practice. This dissertation introduces novel techniques to relax these assumptions -- leading to vastly efficient energy usage in typical networks (up to 20% savings) and new insights on the quality of inference. For example, the phenomenon of sensor drift is ubiquitous in applications such as air-quality monitoring, oceanography and bridge monitoring, where calibration is often difficult and costly. This dissertation provides an analytical framework linking the state of calibration to the overall uncertainty of the inferred parameters. In distributed estimation, sensor nodes locally process their observed data and send the resulting messages to a sink, which combines the received messages to produce a final estimate of the unknown parameter. In this dissertation, this problem is generalized and called collaborative estimation , where some sensors can potentially have access to the observations from neighboring sensors and use that information to enhance the quality of their messages sent to the sink, while using the same (or lower) energy resources. This is motivated by the fact that inter-sensor communication may be possible if sensors are geographically close. As demonstrated in this dissertation, collaborative estimation is particularly effective in energy-skewed and information-skewed networks, where some nodes may have larger batteries than others and similarly some nodes may be more informative (less noisy) compared to others. Since the node with the largest battery is not necessarily also the most informative, the proposed inter-sensor collaboration provides a natural framework to route the relevant information from low-energy-high-quality nodes to high-energy-low-quality nodes in a manner that enhances the overall power-distortion tradeoff. This dissertation also analyzes how time-correlated measurement noise affects the uncertainties of inferred parameters. Imperfections such as baseline drift in sensors result in a time-correlated additive component in the measurement noise. Though some models of drift have been reported in the literature earlier, none of the studies have considered the effect of drifting sensors on an estimation application. In this dissertation, approximate measures of estimation accuracy (Cramer-Rao bounds) are derived as a function of physical properties of sensors -- namely the drift strength, correlation (Markov) factor and the time-elapsed since last calibration. For stationary drift (Markov factor less than one), it is demonstrated that the first order effect of drift is asymptotically equivalent to scaling the measurement noise by an appropriate factor. When the drift is non-stationary (Markov factor equal to one), it is established that the constant part of a signal can only be estimated inconsistently (with non-zero asymptotic variance). The results help quantify the notions that measurements taken sooner after calibration result in more accurate inference

    COMMUNITY DETECTION IN COMPLEX NETWORKS AND APPLICATION TO DENSE WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS LOCALIZATION

    Complex network analysis is applied in numerous researches. Features and characteristics of complex networks provide information associated with a network feature called community structure. Naturally, nodes with similar attributes will be more likely to form a community. Community detection is described as the process by which complex network data are analyzed to uncover organizational properties, and structure; and ultimately to enable extraction of useful information. Analysis of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is considered as one of the most important categories of network analysis due to their enormous and emerging applications. Most WSN applications are location-aware, which entails precise localization of the deployed sensor nodes. However, localization of sensor nodes in very dense network is a challenging task. Among various challenges associated with localization of dense WSNs, anchor node selection is shown as a prominent open problem. Optimum anchor selection impacts overall sensor node localization in terms of accuracy and consumed energy. In this thesis, various approaches are developed to address both overlapping and non-overlapping community detection. The proposed approaches target small-size to very large-size networks in near linear time, which is important for very large, densely-connected networks. Performance of the proposed techniques are evaluated over real-world data-sets with up to 106 nodes and syntactic networks via Newman\u27s Modularity and Normalized Mutual Information (NMI). Moreover, the proposed community detection approaches are extended to develop a novel criterion for range-free anchor selection in WSNs. Our approach uses novel objective functions based on nodes\u27 community memberships to reveal a set of anchors among all available permutations of anchors-selection sets. The performance---the mean and variance of the localization error---of the proposed approach is evaluated for a variety of node deployment scenarios and compared with random anchor selection and the full-ranging approach. In order to study the effectiveness of our algorithm, the performance is evaluated over several simulations that randomly generate network configurations. By incorporating our proposed criteria, the accuracy of the position estimate is improved significantly relative to random anchor selection localization methods. Simulation results show that the proposed technique significantly improves both the accuracy and the precision of the location estimation

    Uncertainty Management of Intelligent Feature Selection in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are envisioned to revolutionize the paradigm of monitoring complex real-world systems at a very high resolution. However, the deployment of a large number of unattended sensor nodes in hostile environments, frequent changes of environment dynamics, and severe resource constraints pose uncertainties and limit the potential use of WSN in complex real-world applications. Although uncertainty management in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is well developed and well investigated, its implications in wireless sensor environments are inadequately addressed. This dissertation addresses uncertainty management issues of spatio-temporal patterns generated from sensor data. It provides a framework for characterizing spatio-temporal pattern in WSN. Using rough set theory and temporal reasoning a novel formalism has been developed to characterize and quantify the uncertainties in predicting spatio-temporal patterns from sensor data. This research also uncovers the trade-off among the uncertainty measures, which can be used to develop a multi-objective optimization model for real-time decision making in sensor data aggregation and samplin

    Performance analysis and optimization of a N-class bipolar network

    A wireless network with unsaturated traffic and N classes of users sharing a channel under random access is analyzed here. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the network stability are derived, along with simple closed formulas for the stationary packet transmission success probabilities and mean packet delays for all classes under stability conditions. We also show, through simple and elegant expressions, that the channel sharing mechanism in the investigated scenario can be seen as a process of partitioning a well-defined quantity into portions, each portion assigned to each user class, the size of which determined by system parameters and performance metrics of that user class. Using the derived expressions, optimization problems are then formulated and solved to minimize the mean packet delay and to maximize the channel throughput per unit of area.     Coverage problems in mobile sensing

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2008.Includes bibliographical references (p. 177-183).Sensor-networks can today measure physical phenomena at spatial and temporal scales that were not achievable earlier, and have shown promise in monitoring the environment, structures, agricultural fields and so on. A key challenge in sensor-networks is the coordination of four actions across the network: measurement (sensing), communication, motion and computation. The term coverage is applied to the central question of how well a sensor-network senses some phenomenon to make inferences. More formally, a coverage problem involves finding an arrangement of sensors that optimizes a coverage metric. In this thesis we examine coverage in the context of three sensing modalities. The literature on the topic has thus far focused largely on coverage problems with the first modality: static event-detection sensors, which detect purely binary events in their immediate vicinity based on thresholds. However, coverage problems for sensors which measure physical quantities like temperature, pressure, chemical concentrations, light intensity and so on in a network configuration have received limited attention in the literature. We refer to this second modality of sensors as estimation sensors; local estimates from such sensors can be used to reconstruct a field. Third, there has been recent interest in deploying sensors on mobile platforms. Mobility has the effect of increasing the effectiveness of sensing actions. We further classify sensor mobility into incidental and intentional motion. Incidentally mobile sensors move passively under the influence of the environment, for instance, a floating sensor drifting in the sea. We define intentional mobility as the ability to control the location and trajectory of the sensor, for example by mounting it on a mobile robot. We build our analysis on a series of cases. We first analyze coverage and connectivity of a network of floating sensors in rivers using simulations and experimental data, and give guidelines for sensor-network design. Second, we examine intentional mobility and detection sensors.(cont.) We examine the problem of covering indoor and outdoor pathways with reconfigurable camera sensor-networks. We propose and validate an empirical model for detection behavior of cameras. We propose a distributed algorithm for reconfiguring locations of cameras to maximize detection performance. Finally, we examine more general strategies for the placement of estimation sensors and ask when and where to take samples in order to estimate an unknown spatiotemporal field with tolerable estimation errors.     This theses is dedicated to the study of generalized diagonal dominance and its various beneflts. The starting point is the well known nonsingularity result of strictly diagonally dominant matrices, from which generalizations were formed in difierent directions. In theses, after a short overview of very well known results, special attention was turned to contemporary contributions, where overview of already published original material is given, together with new obtained results. Particulary, Ger•sgorin-type localization theory for matrix pencils is developed, and application of the results in wireless sensor networks optimization problems is shown.Ova teza je posvećena izučavanju generalizovane dijagonalne dominacije i njenih brojnih prednosti. Osnovu čini poznati rezultat o regularnosti strogo dijagonalnih matrica, čija su uopštenja formirana u brojnim pravcima. U tezi, nakon kratkog pregleda dobro poznatih rezultata, posebna pažnja je posvećena savremenim doprinosima, gde je dat i pregled već objavljenih autorovih rezultata, kao i detaljan tretman novih dobijenih rezultata. Posebno je razvijena teorija lokalizacije Geršgorinovog tipa generalizovanih karakterističnih korena i pokazana je primena rezultata u problemima optimizacije bežičnih senzor mreža
