    Designing a training tool for imaging mental models

    The training process can be conceptualized as the student acquiring an evolutionary sequence of classification-problem solving mental models. For example a physician learns (1) classification systems for patient symptoms, diagnostic procedures, diseases, and therapeutic interventions and (2) interrelationships among these classifications (e.g., how to use diagnostic procedures to collect data about a patient's symptoms in order to identify the disease so that therapeutic measures can be taken. This project developed functional specifications for a computer-based tool, Mental Link, that allows the evaluative imaging of such mental models. The fundamental design approach underlying this representational medium is traversal of virtual cognition space. Typically intangible cognitive entities and links among them are visible as a three-dimensional web that represents a knowledge structure. The tool has a high degree of flexibility and customizability to allow extension to other types of uses, such a front-end to an intelligent tutoring system, knowledge base, hypermedia system, or semantic network

    Intelligent E-Learning System with Personalized Misconception Diagnose and Learning Path Guidance

    In recent years, to advances network technology, IT-enabled learning and support learning are important in on-line education. More learners obtain knowledge by the Web-Learning Instruction (WBI). Learners usually induce the problem of misconception and cognitive overload when they use Web-based learning system. At present, most of the studies in the on-line education either concentrate on the technological aspect (e.g. personalization technology development) or focus on adapting learner’s interests or browsing behaviors, while, learner’s ability and level of knowledge is neglected. Therefore, it is important to consider learner’s ability while designing web-based learning system. This study developed an On-line Knowledge Diagnose System (OKDS) to diagnose learner’s misconception and provide personalized remedial guidance that based on a graphic organizer technology - concept map. The results indicate that the OKDS can effectiveness enhance learners learner’s learning performance and learner also has positive perception of OKDS

    This document describes the progress and plans of the Artificial Intelligence Research Branch (RIA) at ARC in 1990. Activities span a range from basic scientific research to engineering development and to fielded NASA applications, particularly those applications that are enabled by basic research carried out at RIA. Work is conducted in-house and through collaborative partners in academia and industry. Our major focus is on a limited number of research themes with a dual commitment to technical excellence and proven applicability to NASA short, medium, and long-term problems. RIA acts as the Agency's lead organization for research aspects of artificial intelligence, working closely with a second research laboratory at JPL and AI applications groups at all NASA centers

    A reusable knowledge acquisition shell: KASH

    KASH (Knowledge Acquisition SHell) is proposed to assist a knowledge engineer by providing a set of utilities for constructing knowledge acquisition sessions based on interviewing techniques. The information elicited from domain experts during the sessions is guided by a question dependency graph (QDG). The QDG defined by the knowledge engineer, consists of a series of control questions about the domain that are used to organize the knowledge of an expert. The content information supplies by the expert, in response to the questions, is represented in the form of a concept map. These maps can be constructed in a top-down or bottom-up manner by the QDG and used by KASH to generate the rules for a large class of expert system domains. Additionally, the concept maps can support the representation of temporal knowledge. The high degree of reusability encountered in the QDG and concept maps can vastly reduce the development times and costs associated with producing intelligent decision aids, training programs, and process control functions

    Mining health knowledge graph for health risk prediction

    Nowadays classification models have been widely adopted in healthcare, aiming at supporting practitioners for disease diagnosis and human error reduction. The challenge is utilising effective methods to mine real-world data in the medical domain, as many different models have been proposed with varying results. A large number of researchers focus on the diversity problem of real-time data sets in classification models. Some previous works developed methods comprising of homogeneous graphs for knowledge representation and then knowledge discovery. However, such approaches are weak in discovering different relationships among elements. In this paper, we propose an innovative classification model for knowledge discovery from patients’ personal health repositories. The model discovers medical domain knowledge from the massive data in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The knowledge is conceptualised in a heterogeneous knowledge graph. On the basis of the model, an innovative method is developed to help uncover potential diseases suffered by people and, furthermore, to classify patients’ health risk. The proposed model is evaluated by comparison to a baseline model also built on the NHANES data set in an empirical experiment. The performance of proposed model is promising. The paper makes significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in data mining with an innovative classification model specifically crafted for domain-based data. In addition, by accessing the patterns of various observations, the research contributes to the work of practitioners by providing a multifaceted understanding of individual and public health
