    Self-adaptive loop for external disturbance reduction in differential measurement set-up

    We present a method developed to actively compensate common-mode magnetic disturbances on a multi-sensor device devoted to differential measurements. The system uses a field-programmable-gated-array card, and operates in conjunction with a high sensitivity magnetometer: compensating the common-mode of magnetic disturbances results in a relevant reduction of the difference-mode noise. The digital nature of the compensation system allows for using a numerical approach aimed at automatically adapting the feedback loop filter response. A common mode disturbance attenuation exceeding 50 dB is achieved, resulting in a final improvement of the differential noise floor by a factor of 10 over the whole spectral interval of interest.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, 26 ref

    Event-based Vision: A Survey

    Event cameras are bio-inspired sensors that differ from conventional frame cameras: Instead of capturing images at a fixed rate, they asynchronously measure per-pixel brightness changes, and output a stream of events that encode the time, location and sign of the brightness changes. Event cameras offer attractive properties compared to traditional cameras: high temporal resolution (in the order of microseconds), very high dynamic range (140 dB vs. 60 dB), low power consumption, and high pixel bandwidth (on the order of kHz) resulting in reduced motion blur. Hence, event cameras have a large potential for robotics and computer vision in challenging scenarios for traditional cameras, such as low-latency, high speed, and high dynamic range. However, novel methods are required to process the unconventional output of these sensors in order to unlock their potential. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging field of event-based vision, with a focus on the applications and the algorithms developed to unlock the outstanding properties of event cameras. We present event cameras from their working principle, the actual sensors that are available and the tasks that they have been used for, from low-level vision (feature detection and tracking, optic flow, etc.) to high-level vision (reconstruction, segmentation, recognition). We also discuss the techniques developed to process events, including learning-based techniques, as well as specialized processors for these novel sensors, such as spiking neural networks. Additionally, we highlight the challenges that remain to be tackled and the opportunities that lie ahead in the search for a more efficient, bio-inspired way for machines to perceive and interact with the world

    Mixed Signal Integrated Circuit Design for Custom Sensor Interfacing

    Low-power analog integrated circuits (ICs) can be utilized at the interface between an analog sensor and a digital system\u27s input to decrease power consumption, increase system accuracy, perform signal processing, and make the necessary adjustments for compatibility between the two devices. This interfacing has typically been done with custom integrated solutions, but advancements in floating-gate technologies have made reconfigurable analog ICs a competitive option. Whether the solution is a custom design or built from a reconfigurable system, digital peripheral circuits are needed to configure their operation for these analog circuits to work with the best accuracy.;Using an analog IC as a front end signal processor between an analog sensor and wireless sensor mote can greatly decrease battery consumption. Processing in the digital domain requires more power than when done on an analog system. An Analog Signal Processor (ASP) can allow the digital wireless mote to remain in sleep mode while the ASP is always listening for an important event. Once this event occurs, the ASP will wake the wireless mote, allowing it to record the event and send radio transmissions if necessary. As most wireless sensor networks employ the use of batteries as a power source, an energy harvesting system in addition to an ASP can be used to further supplement this battery consumption.;This thesis documents the development of mixed-signal integrated circuits for use as interfaces between analog sensors and digital Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The following work outlines, as well as shows the results, of development for sensor interfacing utilizing both custom mixed signal integrated circuits as well as a Field Programmable Analog Array (FPAA) for post fabrication customization. An Analog Signal Processor (ASP) has been used in an Acoustic Vehicle Classification system. To keep these interfacing methods low power, a prototype energy harvesting system using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) devices is detailed which has led to the design of a fully integrated solution

    This project assesses the state-of-the-art in advanced or 'smart' sensors technology for NASA Life Sciences research applications with an emphasis on those sensors with potential applications on the space station freedom (SSF). The objectives are: (1) to conduct literature reviews on relevant advanced sensor technology; (2) to interview various scientists and engineers in industry, academia, and government who are knowledgeable on this topic; (3) to provide viewpoints and opinions regarding the potential applications of this technology on the SSF; and (4) to provide summary charts of relevant technologies and centers where these technologies are being developed

    Low Power Adaptive Circuits: An Adaptive Log Domain Filter and A Low Power Temperature Insensitive Oscillator Applied in Smart Dust Radio

    This dissertation focuses on exploring two low power adaptive circuits. One is an adaptive filter at audio frequency for system identification. The other is a temperature insensitive oscillator for low power radio frequency communication. The adaptive filter is presented with integrated learning rules for model reference estimation. The system is a first order low pass filter with two parameters: gain and cut-off frequency. It is implemented using multiple input floating gate transistors to realize online learning of system parameters. Adaptive dynamical system theory is used to derive robust control laws in a system identification task. Simulation results show that convergence is slower using simplified control laws but still occurs within milliseconds. Experimental results confirm that the estimated gain and cut-off frequency track the corresponding parameters of the reference filter. During operation, deterministic errors are introduced by mismatch within the analog circuit implementation. An analysis is presented which attributes the errors to current mirror mismatch. The harmonic distortion of the filter operating in different inversion is analyzed using EKV model numerically. The temperature insensitive oscillator is designed for a low power wireless network. The system is based on a current starved ring oscillator implemented using CMOS transistors instead of LC tank for less chip area and power consumption. The frequency variance with temperature is compensated by the temperature adaptive circuits. Experimental results show that the frequency stability from 5°C to 65°C has been improved 10 times with automatic compensation and at least 1 order less power is consumed than published competitors. This oscillator is applied in a 2.2GHz OOK transmitter and a 2.2GHz phase locked loop based FM receiver. With the increasing needs of compact antenna, possible high data rate and wide unused frequency range of short distance communication, a higher frequency phase locked loop used for BFSK receiver is explored using an LC oscillator for its capability at 20GHz. The success of frequency demodulation is demonstrated in the simulation results that the PLL can lock in 0.5μs with 35MHz lock-in range and 2MHz detection resolution.     An adaptive concept which combines gain-scheduled control laws with explicit maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) identification to provide the scheduling values is described. The MLE algorithm was improved by incorporating attitude data, estimating gust statistics for setting filter gains, and improving parameter tracking during changing flight conditions. A lateral MLE algorithm was designed to improve true air speed and angle of attack estimates during lateral maneuvers. Relationships between the pitch axis sensors inherent in the MLE design were examined and used for sensor failure detection.
