Aging concrete structures: a review of mechanics and concepts
The safe and cost-efficient management of our built infrastructure is a challenging task considering the expected service life of at least 50 years. In spite of time-dependent changes in material properties, deterioration processes and changing demand by society, the structures need to satisfy many technical requirements related to serviceability, durability, sustainability and bearing capacity. This review paper summarizes the challenges associated with the safe design and maintenance of aging concrete structures and gives an overview of some concepts and approaches that are being developed to address these challenges
Spatial Smoothing Techniques for the Assessment of Habitat Suitability
Precise knowledge about factors influencing the habitat suitability of a certain species forms the basis for the implementation of effective programs to conserve biological diversity. Such knowledge is frequently gathered from studies relating abundance data to a set of influential variables in a regression setup. In particular, generalised linear models are used to analyse binary presence/absence data or counts of a certain species at locations within an observation area. However, one of the key assumptions of generalised linear models, the independence of the observations is often violated in practice since the points at which the observations are collected are spatially aligned. While several approaches have been developed to analyse and account for spatial correlation in regression models with normally distributed responses, far less work has been done in the context of generalised linear models. In this paper, we describe a general framework for semiparametric spatial generalised linear models that allows for the routine analysis of non-normal spatially aligned regression data. The approach is utilised for the analysis of a data set of synthetic bird species in beech forests, revealing that ignorance of spatial dependence actually may lead to false conclusions in a number of situations
Complementarity of Innovation Policies in the Brazilian Industry: An Econometric Study
The paper aims at assessing discrete complementarities in innovation policies in the context of the Brazilian industry in 2003. The paper considers the approach advanced by Mohnen and and Röller [European Economic Review, 2005] that focuses on supermodularity and submodularity tests for obstacles to innovation (in the present application: lack of finance sources, lack of skilled personnel, lack of cooperation opportunities and lack of information on technology or markets). The application avoids micro-aggregation of the data and explicitly considers sampling weights in the econometric estimation. The analysis highlights the two phases of the innovation process in terms of the propensity and intensity of innovation. The evidence, unlike previous evidence, is not totally clear cut in terms of contrasts of the two phases. Nevertheless one can detect some substitutability and complementarity for specific pairs of obstacles in analysing the propensity to innovate, and strong evidence of complementarities in obstacles when considering the intensity of innovation. Fuzzy Sets, Fuzzy Logic and Their Applications
The present book contains 20 articles collected from amongst the 53 total submitted manuscripts for the Special Issue “Fuzzy Sets, Fuzzy Loigic and Their Applications” of the MDPI journal Mathematics. The articles, which appear in the book in the series in which they were accepted, published in Volumes 7 (2019) and 8 (2020) of the journal, cover a wide range of topics connected to the theory and applications of fuzzy systems and their extensions and generalizations. This range includes, among others, management of the uncertainty in a fuzzy environment; fuzzy assessment methods of human-machine performance; fuzzy graphs; fuzzy topological and convergence spaces; bipolar fuzzy relations; type-2 fuzzy; and intuitionistic, interval-valued, complex, picture, and Pythagorean fuzzy sets, soft sets and algebras, etc. The applications presented are oriented to finance, fuzzy analytic hierarchy, green supply chain industries, smart health practice, and hotel selection. Lattice Boltzmann Methods for thermal flows: continuum limit and applications to compressible Rayleigh-Taylor systems
We compute the continuum thermo-hydrodynamical limit of a new formulation of
lattice kinetic equations for thermal compressible flows, recently proposed in
[Sbragaglia et al., J. Fluid Mech. 628 299 (2009)]. We show that the
hydrodynamical manifold is given by the correct compressible Fourier-
Navier-Stokes equations for a perfect fluid. We validate the numerical
algorithm by means of exact results for transition to convection in
Rayleigh-B\'enard compressible systems and against direct comparison with
finite-difference schemes. The method is stable and reliable up to temperature
jumps between top and bottom walls of the order of 50% the averaged bulk
temperature. We use this method to study Rayleigh-Taylor instability for
compressible stratified flows and we determine the growth of the mixing layer
at changing Atwood numbers up to At ~ 0.4. We highlight the role played by the
adiabatic gradient in stopping the mixing layer growth in presence of high
stratification and we quantify the asymmetric growth rate for spikes and
bubbles for two dimensional Rayleigh- Taylor systems with resolution up to Lx
\times Lz = 1664 \times 4400 and with Rayleigh numbers up to Ra ~ 2 \times
