Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, City and Regional Planning, Izmir, 2005Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 138-143)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishxiii, 169 leavesEarthquakes are one of the most destructive natural occurrences. They strike without warning and they may result various damages to urban environment and human life. The technology to predict their specific time, location and magnitude has not developed yet. It is possible to reduce the harmful effects of earthquakes and to create urban surroundings resistant to earthquakes by comprehensive projects stated as "risk mitigation activities".Turkey is exposed to earthquake risk due to fact that it is on an active seismic zone and that most of the buildings are not in conformity with earthquake safe design codes. zmir also has high earthquake risk as determined in the content of zmir RADIUS Project that is conducted by United Nations. This thesis is mainly about to ensure safety of urban environment that is expose to earthquake risk. The thesis has three principle purposes: to produce a guide about the projects done for mitigating zmir.s earthquake risk, to explain the strategies, process and methods for urban safety and to develop planning and design principles of earthquake conscious urban design.Risk assessment process of the existing buildings and urban environment is the part of the urban safety process. In this context risk management, risk assessment process and the methods for risk assessment is clarified. Especially the methods for vulnerability assessment of existing urban pattern and of buildings are explained. Strategies for designing earthquake safe cities are discussed. Urban transformation is proposed as a solution of urban safety. As a matter of this, a case study is undertaken on Fikri Altay District in zmir comprising a vulnerability assessment and an urban transformation project.Different methods used in the content of the survey. zmir.s scenario earthquake produced in the content of RADIUS Project is adopted for hazard assessment. Istanbul Earthquake Master Plans. observed vulnerability assessment method is modified for the case study area and RADIUS computer software is used for damage estimation.Consequently, a redevelopment plan and principles for earthquake conscious urban transformation is proposed

IKH-EFT: An improved method of workflow scheduling using the krill herd algorithm in the fog-cloud environment

peer reviewedGiven the increase diversity of smart devices and objectives of the application management such as energy consumption, makespan users expect their requests to be responded to in an appropriate computation environment as properly as possible. In this paper, a method of workflow scheduling based on the fog-cloud architecture has been designed given the high processing capability of the cloud and the close communication between the user and the fog computing node, which reduces delay in response. We also seek to minimize consumption and reduce energy use and monetary cost in order to maximize customer satisfaction with proper scheduling. Given the large number of variables that are used in workflow scheduling and the optimization of contradictory objectives, the problem is NP-hard, and the multi-objective metaheuristic krill herd algorithm is used to solve it. The initial population is generated in a smart fashion to allow fast convergence of the algorithm. For allocation of tasks to the available fog-cloud resources, the EFT (earliest finish time) technique is used, and resource voltage and frequency are assumed to be dynamic to reduce energy use. A comprehensive simulation has been made for assessment of the proposed method in different scenarios with various values of CCR. The simulation results indicate that makespan exhibits improvements by 9.9, 8.7% and 6.7% on average compared with respect to the methods of IHEFT, HEFT and IWO-CA, respectively. Moreover, the monetary cost of the method and energy use have simultaneously decreased in the fog-cloud environment

An Investigation on Benefit-Cost Analysis of Greenhouse Structures in Antalya

Significant population increase across the world, loss of cultivable land and increasing demand for food put pressure on agriculture. To meet the demand, greenhouses are built, which are, light structures with transparent cladding material in order to provide controlled microclimatic environment proper for plant production. Conceptually, greenhouses are similar with manufacturing buildings where a controlled environment for manufacturing and production have been provided and proper spaces for standardized production processes have been enabled. Parallel with the trends in the world, particularly in southern regions, greenhouse structures have been increasingly constructed and operated in Turkey. A significant number of greenhouses are located at Antalya. The satellite images demonstrated that for over last three decades, there has been a continuous invasion of greenhouses on all cultivable land. There are various researches and attempts for the improvement of greenhouse design and for increasing food production by decreasing required energy consumption. However, the majority of greenhouses in Turkey are very rudimentary structures where capital required for investment is low, but maintenance requirements are high when compared with new generation greenhouse structures. In this research paper, life-long capital requirements for construction and operation of greenhouse buildings in Antalya has been investigated by using benefit-cost analysis study
