AI and OR in management of operations: history and trends
The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques. State-of-the-art on research and applications of machine learning in the building life cycle
Fueled by big data, powerful and affordable computing resources, and advanced algorithms, machine learning has been explored and applied to buildings research for the past decades and has demonstrated its potential to enhance building performance. This study systematically surveyed how machine learning has been applied at different stages of building life cycle. By conducting a literature search on the Web of Knowledge platform, we found 9579 papers in this field and selected 153 papers for an in-depth review. The number of published papers is increasing year by year, with a focus on building design, operation, and control. However, no study was found using machine learning in building commissioning. There are successful pilot studies on fault detection and diagnosis of HVAC equipment and systems, load prediction, energy baseline estimate, load shape clustering, occupancy prediction, and learning occupant behaviors and energy use patterns. None of the existing studies were adopted broadly by the building industry, due to common challenges including (1) lack of large scale labeled data to train and validate the model, (2) lack of model transferability, which limits a model trained with one data-rich building to be used in another building with limited data, (3) lack of strong justification of costs and benefits of deploying machine learning, and (4) the performance might not be reliable and robust for the stated goals, as the method might work for some buildings but could not be generalized to others. Findings from the study can inform future machine learning research to improve occupant comfort, energy efficiency, demand flexibility, and resilience of buildings, as well as to inspire young researchers in the field to explore multidisciplinary approaches that integrate building science, computing science, data science, and social science
Multi crteria decision making and its applications : a literature review
This paper presents current techniques used in Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) and their applications. Two basic approaches for MCDM, namely Artificial Intelligence MCDM (AIMCDM) and Classical MCDM (CMCDM) are discussed and investigated. Recent articles from international journals related to MCDM are collected and analyzed to find which approach is more common than the other in MCDM. Also, which area these techniques are applied to. Those articles are appearing in journals for the year 2008 only. This paper provides evidence that currently, both AIMCDM and CMCDM are equally common in MCDM
Importance and applications of robotic and autonomous systems (RAS) in railway maintenance sector: a review
Maintenance, which is critical for safe, reliable, quality, and cost-effective service, plays a dominant role in the railway industry. Therefore, this paper examines the importance and applications of Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS) in railway maintenance. More than 70 research publications, which are either in practice or under investigation describing RAS developments in the railway maintenance, are analysed. It has been found that the majority of RAS developed are for rolling-stock maintenance, followed by railway track maintenance. Further, it has been found that there is growing interest and demand for robotics and autonomous systems in the railway maintenance sector, which is largely due to the increased competition, rapid expansion and ever-increasing expense
Multi-objective probabilistic optimization of bridge lifetime maintenance : novel approach
Due to the increase in deterioration of the existing civil infrastructure, in particular bridge networks, governments and highway agencies are trying to find methods that allow a consistent and rational management of existing bridges. In this paper, a novel approach is presented. This approach uses multi-objective probabilistic optimization over time and defines performance of existing bridges in terms of lifetime condition, safety, and cost. The proposed approach aims at providing a tool for optimal maintenance management policy definition of a large group of similar structures. Consequently, emphasis is put on the use of limited information and low computational cost. Applications to real cases are presented showing the applicability of the method as well as its advantages in terms of reduction of costs and improvements in performance.(undefined
An overview on nature-inspired optimization algorithms for Structural Health Monitoring of historical buildings
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of historical building is an emerging field of research aimed at the development of strategies for on-line assessment of structural condition and identification of damage in the earliest stage. Built heritage is weak against operational and environmental condition and preservation must guarantee minimum repair and non-intrusiveness. SHM provides a cost-effective management and maintenance allowing prevention and prioritization of the interventions. Recently, in computer science, mimicking nature to address complex problems is becoming more frequent. Nature-inspired approaches turn out to be extremely efficient in facing optimization, commonly used to analyze engineering processes in SHM, providing interesting advantages when compared with classic methods. This paper begins with an introduction to Natural Computing. Multi-objective optimization for time-based preventive maintenance within the transport network: a review
Preventive maintenance in transportation is essential not only to safeguard billions in business and infrastructure investment, but also to guarantee safety, reliability and efficacy within the network. Government, industry and society have been increasingly recognising the importance of keeping transport units condition well-preserved. The challenge, however, is to achieve optimal performance of the existing transport systems within acceptable costs, effective workforce use and minimum disruption. Those are generally conflicting objectives. Multi-objective optimisation approaches have served as powerful tools to assist stakeholders to properly deploy preventive maintenance in industry. In this study, we review the research conducted in the application of multi-objective optimisation for preventive maintenance in transport-related activities. We focus on time-based preventive maintenance for production, infrastructure, rail and energy providers. Negatively Correlated Search
Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) have been shown to be powerful tools for
complex optimization problems, which are ubiquitous in both communication and
big data analytics. This paper presents a new EA, namely Negatively Correlated
Search (NCS), which maintains multiple individual search processes in parallel
and models the search behaviors of individual search processes as probability
distributions. NCS explicitly promotes negatively correlated search behaviors
by encouraging differences among the probability distributions (search
behaviors). By this means, individual search processes share information and
cooperate with each other to search diverse regions of a search space, which
makes NCS a promising method for non-convex optimization. The cooperation
scheme of NCS could also be regarded as a novel diversity preservation scheme
that, different from other existing schemes, directly promotes diversity at the
level of search behaviors rather than merely trying to maintain diversity among
candidate solutions. Empirical studies showed that NCS is competitive to
well-established search methods in the sense that NCS achieved the best overall
performance on 20 multimodal (non-convex) continuous optimization problems. The
advantages of NCS over state-of-the-art approaches are also demonstrated with a
case study on the synthesis of unequally spaced linear antenna arrays
