    Parameter Identification of BLDC Motor Model Via Metaheuristic Optimization Techniques

    AbstractThe brushless dc (BLDC) motor has been increasingly used in industrial automation, automotive, aerospace, instrumentation and appliances. Analysis and design of the BLDC motor efficiently require its accurate model and parameters. In this paper, the parameter identification of the BLDC motor model via well-known metaheuristic optimization search techniques is proposed. Two trajectory-based methods, i.e. adaptive tabu search (ATS) and intensified current search (ICS) are employed to estimate the BLDC motor parameters. As simulation results of model identification and validation, both ATS and ICS can provide optimal BLDC model parameters. The BLDC models obtained show a very good agreement to actual system dynamics. However, the ICS can pro-vide optimal model parameters faster than the ATS

    Artificial Intelligence-Based Optimal PID Controller Design for BLDC Motor with Phase Advance

    This paper proposes the artificial intelligence (AI)-based optimal PID controller design optimization of brushless direct current (BLDC) motor speed control with phase advance approach. The proposed control system allows the speed adjustment of the BLDC motor by phase advance technique. In this paper, two selected AI algorithms, i.e., the adaptive tabu search (ATS) and the intensified current search (ICS) are conducted as the optimizer for the PID controller design. The proposed control system is simulated by MATLAB/SIMULINK. Results obtained by the ATS and ICS will be compared with those obtained by the Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) tuning rule and the genetic algorithm (GA). It shows that the speed response of the BLDC motor by phase advance with the PID controller optimized by the ICS outperforms better than the ZN, GA and ATS

    On the Adaptation of Building Controls to the Envelope and the Occupants

    The sun is the biggest known source of energy in our solar system. We feel its strength when it gets hot during the the day and we notice its absence during the night when we feel cold. So as to be less dependent on the sun as an energy source, we implemented additional heating and cooling sources to maintain the temperature within a comfortable range. The downside to this is that the majority of energy consumed within the housing sector is used up on the heating and cooling alone. To profit from the vast energy source of the sun we propose a user-adaptive and building-adaptive blind control for residential buildings, that is implemented in prefabricated modules for facade renovation. User-adaptive means that it is the occupant who is responsible for the temperature control within the home. Building-adaptive, in this context, means that the temperature control is established automatically without any user input. Through the evaluation of occupant queries we have shown that a general measure for thermal comfort is not possible for all occupants. Consequently, there is a need for a personalized measure of thermal comfort. In order to create this the occupant enters votes via the interface; from this we deduced statistically the probability of comfort relative to the indoor temperature. According to the profile the control sets its target temperature. The profile steadily adapts the user's preferences and through this we can also capture seasonal changes in comfort temperature. This guarantees that at each point in time the control system knows the desired temperature and is taking action to achieve it. The adaption to the building is achieved with the fitting of a simple thermal building model with data collected by the sensors of the control system. We showed that the monitored data sufficiently fits the model. With the help of the simple model we evaluated different control strategies and optimized them according to the thermal profile. For our performance tests we conducted computer simulations as well as a 6-month field study. For the simulations, a specific test bed was suggested that would assess the saving potential, which can then be compared to the performance of the tested control. Results showed that the suggested control system is capitalizing on most of the achievable energy savings and thermal comfort. A 6-month field study in the LESO-PB building was carried out to test the impact on energy demand as well as comfort under real conditions. It appeared that the automatically controlled office needed only approximately 50% of the average heating energy that was used in the manually controlled offices. Furthermore, the probability of thermal comfort was, on average, 10% higher in the automatically controlled offices when compared to those that were controlled manually

    From Benchtop to Beside: Patient-specific Outcomes Explained by Invitro Experiment

    Study: Recent analyses show that females have higher early postoperative (PO) mortality and right ventricular failure (RVF) than males after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation; and that this association is partially mediated by smaller LV size in females. Benchtop experiments allow us to investigate patient-specific (PS) characteristics in a reproducible way given the fact that the PS anatomy and physiology is mimicked accurately. With multiple heart models of varying LV size, we can directly study the individual effects of titrating the LVAD speed and the resulting bi-ventricular volumes, shedding light on the interplay between LV and RV as well as resulting inter-ventricular septum (IVS) positions, which may cause the different outcomes pertaining to sex. Methods: In vitro, we studied the impact of the heart size to IVS position using two smaller and two larger sized PS silicone heart phantoms derived from clinical CT images (Fig. 1A). With ultrasound crystals that were integrated on a placeholder inflow cannula, the IVS position was measured during LV and RV volume changes (dV) mimicking varying ventricular loading states (Fig. 1B). Results: Going from small to large dV, at zero curvature, the septum starts to shift towards the left; for smaller hearts at dV = -40 mL and for larger hearts at dV = -50 mL (Fig. 1C). This result indicates that smaller hearts are more prone to an IVS shift to the left than larger hearts. We conclude that smaller LV size may therefore mediate increased early PO LVAD mortality and RVF observed in females compared to males. Novel 3D silicone printing technology enables us to study accurate, PS heart models across a heterogeneous patient population. PS relationships can be studied simultaneously to clinical assessments and support the decision-making prior to LVAD implantation
