    ECG denoising and fiducial point extraction using an extended Kalman filtering framework with linear and nonlinear phase observations

    International audienceIn this paper we propose an efficient method for denoising and extracting fiducial point (FP) of ECG signals. The method is based on a nonlinear dynamic model which uses Gaussian functions to model ECG waveforms. For estimating the model parameters, we use an extended Kalman filter (EKF). In this framework called EKF25, all the parameters of Gaussian functions as well as the ECG waveforms (P-wave, QRS complex and T-wave) in the ECG dynamical model, are considered as state variables. In this paper, the dynamic time warping method is used to estimate the nonlinear ECG phase observation. We compare this new approach with linear phase observation models. Using linear and nonlinear EKF25 for ECG denoising and nonlinear EKF25 for fiducial point extraction and ECG interval analysis are the main contributions of this paper. Performance comparison with other EKF-based techniques shows that the proposed method results in higher output SNR with an average SNR improvement of 12 dB for an input SNR of-8 dB. To evaluate the FP extraction performance, we compare the proposed method with a method based on partially collapsed Gibbs sampler and an established EKF-based method. The mean absolute error and the root mean square error of all FPs, across all databases are 14 msec and 22 msec, respectively, for our proposed method, with an advantage when using a nonlinear phase observation. These errors are significantly smaller than errors obtained with other methods. For ECG interval analysis, with an absolute mean error and a root mean square error of about 22 msec and 29 msec, the proposed method achieves better accuracy and smaller variability with respect to other methods.     ADAPTIVE MODELS-BASED CARDIAC SIGNALS ANALYSIS AND FEATURE EXTRACTION

    Signal modeling and feature extraction are among the most crucial and important steps for stochastic signal processing. In this thesis, a general framework that employs adaptive model-based recursive Bayesian state estimation for signal processing and feature extraction is described. As a case study, the proposed framework is studied for the problem of cardiac signal analysis. The main objective is to improve the signal processing aspects of cardiac signals by developing new techniques based on adaptive modelling of electrocardiogram (ECG) wave-forms. Specially several novel and improved approaches to model-based ECG decomposition, waveform characterization and feature extraction are proposed and studied in detail. In the concept of ECG decomposition and wave-forms characterization, the main idea is to extend and improve the signal dynamical models (i.e. reducing the non-linearity of the state model with respect to previous solutions) while combining with Kalman smoother to increase the accuracy of the model in order to split the ECG signal into its waveform components, as it is proved that Kalman filter/smoother is an optimal estimator in minimum mean square error (MMSE) for linear dynamical systems. The framework is used for many real applications, such as: ECG components extraction, ST segment analysis (estimation of a possible marker of ventricular repolarization known as T/QRS ratio) and T-wave Alternans (TWA) detection, and its extension to many other applications is straightforward. Based on the proposed framework, a novel model to characterization of Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is presented which is more effective when compared with other methods proposed with the same aims. In this model, ventricular activity (VA) is represented by a sum of Gaussian kernels, while a sinusoidal model is employed for atrial activity (AA). This new model is able to track AA, VA and fibrillatory frequency simultaneously against other methods which try to analyze the atrial fibrillatory waves (f-waves) after VA cancellation. Furthermore we study a new ECG processing method for assessing the spatial dispersion of ventricular repolarization (SHVR) using V-index and a novel algorithm to estimate the index is presented, leading to more accurate estimates. The proposed algorithm was used to study the diagnostic and prognostic value of the V-index in patients with symptoms suggestive of Acute Myocardial Infraction (AMI)

    Les malformations cardiaques congénitales sont la première cause de décès liés à une anomalie congénitale. L electrocardiogramme du fœtus (ECGf), qui est censé contenir beaucoup plus d informations par rapport aux méthodes échographiques conventionnelles, peut être mesuré e par des électrodes sur l abdomen de la mère. Cependant, il est tres faible et mélangé avec plusieurs sources de bruit et interférence y compris l ECG de la mère (ECGm) dont le niveau est très fort. Dans les études précédentes, plusieurs méthodes ont été proposées pour l extraction de l ECGf à partir des signaux enregistrés par des électrodes placées à la surface du corps de la mère. Cependant, ces méthodes nécessitent un nombre de capteurs important, et s avèrent inefficaces avec un ou deux capteurs. Dans cette étude trois approches innovantes reposant sur une paramétrisation algébrique, statistique ou par variables d état sont proposées. Ces trois méthodes mettent en œuvre des modélisations différentes de la quasi-périodicité du signal cardiaque. Dans la première approche, le signal cardiaque et sa variabilité sont modélisés par un filtre de Kalman. Dans la seconde approche, le signal est découpé en fenêtres selon les battements, et l empilage constitue un tenseur dont on cherchera la décomposition. Dans la troisième approche, le signal n est pas modélisé directement, mais il est considéré comme un processus Gaussien, caractérisé par ses statistiques à l ordre deux. Dans les différentes modèles, contrairement aux études précédentes, l ECGm et le (ou les) ECGf sont modélisés explicitement. Les performances des méthodes proposées, qui utilisent un nombre minimum de capteurs, sont évaluées sur des données synthétiques et des enregistrements réels, y compris les signaux cardiaques des fœtus jumeaux.Congenital heart defects are the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths. The fetal electrocardiogram (fECG), which is believed to contain much more information as compared with conventional sonographic methods, can be measured by placing electrodes on the mother s abdomen. However, it has very low power and is mixed with several sources of noise and interference, including the strong maternal ECG (mECG). In previous studies, several methods have been proposed for the extraction of fECG signals recorded from the maternal body surface. However, these methods require a large number of sensors, and are ineffective with only one or two sensors. In this study, state modeling, statistical and deterministic approaches are proposed for capturing weak traces of fetal cardiac signals. These three methods implement different models of the quasi-periodicity of the cardiac signal. In the first approach, the heart rate and its variability are modeled by a Kalman filter. In the second approach, the signal is divided into windows according to the beats. Stacking the windows constructs a tensor that is then decomposed. In a third approach, the signal is not directly modeled, but it is considered as a Gaussian process characterized by its second order statistics. In all the different proposed methods, unlike previous studies, mECG and fECG(s) are explicitly modeled.     ECG Biometric Authentication: A Comparative Analysis

    Robust authentication and identification methods become an indispensable urgent task to protect the integrity of the devices and the sensitive data. Passwords have provided access control and authentication, but have shown their inherent vulnerabilities. The speed and convenience factor are what makes biometrics the ideal authentication solution as they could have a low probability of circumvention. To overcome the limitations of the traditional biometric systems, electrocardiogram (ECG) has received the most attention from the biometrics community due to the highly individualized nature of the ECG signals and the fact that they are ubiquitous and difficult to counterfeit. However, one of the main challenges in ECG-based biometric development is the lack of large ECG databases. In this paper, we contribute to creating a new large gallery off-the-person ECG datasets that can provide new opportunities for the ECG biometric research community. We explore the impact of filtering type, segmentation, feature extraction, and health status on ECG biometric by using the evaluation metrics. Our results have shown that our ECG biometric authentication outperforms existing methods lacking the ability to efficiently extract features, filtering, segmentation, and matching. This is evident by obtaining 100% accuracy for PTB, MIT-BHI, CEBSDB, CYBHI, ECG-ID, and in-house ECG-BG database in spite of noisy, unhealthy ECG signals while performing five-fold cross-validation. In addition, an average of 2.11% EER among 1,694 subjects is obtained

    Extraction and Detection of Fetal Electrocardiograms from Abdominal Recordings

    The non-invasive fetal ECG (NIFECG), derived from abdominal surface electrodes, offers novel diagnostic possibilities for prenatal medicine. Despite its straightforward applicability, NIFECG signals are usually corrupted by many interfering sources. Most significantly, by the maternal ECG (MECG), whose amplitude usually exceeds that of the fetal ECG (FECG) by multiple times. The presence of additional noise sources (e.g. muscular/uterine noise, electrode motion, etc.) further affects the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the FECG. These interfering sources, which typically show a strong non-stationary behavior, render the FECG extraction and fetal QRS (FQRS) detection demanding signal processing tasks. In this thesis, several of the challenges regarding NIFECG signal analysis were addressed. In order to improve NIFECG extraction, the dynamic model of a Kalman filter approach was extended, thus, providing a more adequate representation of the mixture of FECG, MECG, and noise. In addition, aiming at the FECG signal quality assessment, novel metrics were proposed and evaluated. Further, these quality metrics were applied in improving FQRS detection and fetal heart rate estimation based on an innovative evolutionary algorithm and Kalman filtering signal fusion, respectively. The elaborated methods were characterized in depth using both simulated and clinical data, produced throughout this thesis. To stress-test extraction algorithms under ideal circumstances, a comprehensive benchmark protocol was created and contributed to an extensively improved NIFECG simulation toolbox. The developed toolbox and a large simulated dataset were released under an open-source license, allowing researchers to compare results in a reproducible manner. Furthermore, to validate the developed approaches under more realistic and challenging situations, a clinical trial was performed in collaboration with the University Hospital of Leipzig. Aside from serving as a test set for the developed algorithms, the clinical trial enabled an exploratory research. This enables a better understanding about the pathophysiological variables and measurement setup configurations that lead to changes in the abdominal signal's SNR.     Sensing and Signal Processing in Smart Healthcare

    In the last decade, we have witnessed the rapid development of electronic technologies that are transforming our daily lives. Such technologies are often integrated with various sensors that facilitate the collection of human motion and physiological data and are equipped with wireless communication modules such as Bluetooth, radio frequency identification, and near-field communication. In smart healthcare applications, designing ergonomic and intuitive human–computer interfaces is crucial because a system that is not easy to use will create a huge obstacle to adoption and may significantly reduce the efficacy of the solution. Signal and data processing is another important consideration in smart healthcare applications because it must ensure high accuracy with a high level of confidence in order for the applications to be useful for clinicians in making diagnosis and treatment decisions. This Special Issue is a collection of 10 articles selected from a total of 26 contributions.     Tracking Rhythmicity in Biomedical Signals using Sequential Monte Carlo methods

    Cyclical patterns are common in signals that originate from natural systems such as the human body and man-made machinery. Often these cyclical patterns are not perfectly periodic. In that case, the signals are called pseudo-periodic or quasi-periodic and can be modeled as a sum of time-varying sinusoids, whose frequencies, phases, and amplitudes change slowly over time. Each time-varying sinusoid represents an individual rhythmical component, called a partial, that can be characterized by three parameters: frequency, phase, and amplitude. Quasi-periodic signals often contain multiple partials that are harmonically related. In that case, the frequencies of other partials become exact integer multiples of that of the slowest partial. These signals are referred to as multi-harmonic signals. Examples of such signals are electrocardiogram (ECG), arterial blood pressure (ABP), and human voice. A Markov process is a mathematical model for a random system whose future and past states are independent conditional on the present state. Multi-harmonic signals can be modeled as a stochastic process with the Markov property. The Markovian representation of multi-harmonic signals enables us to use state-space tracking methods to continuously estimate the frequencies, phases, and amplitudes of the partials. Several research groups have proposed various signal analysis methods such as hidden Markov Models (HMM), short time Fourier transform (STFT), and Wigner-Ville distribution to solve this problem. Recently, a few groups of researchers have proposed Monte Carlo methods which estimate the posterior distribution of the fundamental frequency in multi-harmonic signals sequentially. However, multi-harmonic tracking is more challenging than single-frequency tracking, though the reason for this has not been well understood. The main objectives of this dissertation are to elucidate the fundamental obstacles to multi-harmonic tracking and to develop a reliable multi-harmonic tracker that can track cyclical patterns in multi-harmonic signals

    Trajectory based video analysis in multi-camera setups

    PhDThis thesis presents an automated framework for activity analysis in multi-camera setups. We start with the calibration of cameras particularly without overlapping views. An algorithm is presented that exploits trajectory observations in each view and works iteratively on camera pairs. First outliers are identified and removed from observations of each camera. Next, spatio-temporal information derived from the available trajectory is used to estimate unobserved trajectory segments in areas uncovered by the cameras. The unobserved trajectory estimates are used to estimate the relative position of each camera pair, whereas the exit-entrance direction of each object is used to estimate their relative orientation. The process continues and iteratively approximates the configuration of all cameras with respect to each other. Finally, we refi ne the initial configuration estimates with bundle adjustment, based on the observed and estimated trajectory segments. For cameras with overlapping views, state-of-the-art homography based approaches are used for calibration. Next we establish object correspondence across multiple views. Our algorithm consists of three steps, namely association, fusion and linkage. For association, local trajectory pairs corresponding to the same physical object are estimated using multiple spatio-temporal features on a common ground plane. To disambiguate spurious associations, we employ a hybrid approach that utilises the matching results on the image plane and ground plane. The trajectory segments after association are fused by adaptive averaging. Trajectory linkage then integrates segments and generates a single trajectory of an object across the entire observed area. Finally, for activities analysis clustering is applied on complete trajectories. Our clustering algorithm is based on four main steps, namely the extraction of a set of representative trajectory features, non-parametric clustering, cluster merging and information fusion for the identification of normal and rare object motion patterns. First we transform the trajectories into a set of feature spaces on which Meanshift identi es the modes and the corresponding clusters. Furthermore, a merging procedure is devised to re fine these results by combining similar adjacent clusters. The fi nal common patterns are estimated by fusing the clustering results across all feature spaces. Clusters corresponding to reoccurring trajectories are considered as normal, whereas sparse trajectories are associated to abnormal and rare events. The performance of the proposed framework is evaluated on standard data-sets and compared with state-of-the-art techniques. Experimental results show that the proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms both in terms of accuracy and robustness
