    A Systems Engineering Methodology for Wide Area Network Selection using an Analytical Hierarchy Process

    In this paper, we apply a systems engineering methodology to select the most appropriate wide area network (WAN) media suite, according to organizational technical requirements, using an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). AHP is a mathematical decision modeling tool that utilizes decomposition, determination, and synthesis to solve complex engineering decision problems. AHP can deal with the universal modeling of process engineering decision-making, which is difficult to describe quantitatively, by integrating quantitative and qualitative analysis. We formulate and apply AHP to a hypothetical case study in order to examine its feasibility for the WAN media selection problem. The results indicate that our model can improve the decision-making process by evaluating and comparing all alternative WANs. This shows that AHP can support and assist an organization in choosing the most effective solution according to its demands. AHP is an effective resource-saver from many perspectives—it gives high performance, economic, and high quality solutions.     On the Use of Hybrid Heuristics for Providing Service to Select the Return Channel in an Interactive Digital TV Environment

    The technologies used to link the end-user to a telecommunication infrastructure, has been changing over time due to the consolidation of new access technologies. Moreover, the emergence of new tools for information dissemination, such as interactive digital TV, makes the selection of access technology, factor of fundamental importance. One of the greatest advantages of using digital TV as means to disseminate information is the installation of applications. In this chapter, a load characterization of a typical application embedded in a digital TV is performed to determine its behavior. However, it is important to note that applications send information through an access technology. Therefore, this chapter, based on the study on load characterization, developed a methodology combining Bayesian networks and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) analytical approach to provide support to service providers to opt for a technology (power line communication, PLC, wireless, wired, etc.) for the return channel

    Broadbanding Brunswick: High-speed broadband and household media ecologies

    New research from the University of Melbourne and Swinburne University has found that 82% of households in the NBN first release site of Brunswick, Victoria, think the NBN is a good idea. The study, Broadbanding Brunswick: High-speed Broadband and Household Media Ecologies, examines the take-up, use and implications of high-speed broadband for some of its earliest adopters. It looks at how the adoption of high-speed broadband influences household consumption patterns and use of telecoms. The survey of 282 Brunswick households found there had been a significant uptake of the NBN during the course of the research. In 2011, 20% of households were connected to the NBN and in 2012 that number had risen to 34%. Families, home owners, higher income earners and teleworkers were most likely to adopt the NBN. Many NBN users reported paying less for their monthly internet bills, with 49% paying about the same.     As government agencies and business become more dependent on web services, software solutions to automate their procurement gain importance. Current approaches for automating the procurement of web services suffer from an important drawback: neither uncertainty measures nor non-linear, and complex relations among parameters can be used by providers to specify quality-ofservice in offers. In this paper, we look deeply into the roots of this drawback and present a proposal which overcomes it. The key point to achieve this improvement has been using the constraint programming as a formal basis, since it endows the model with a very powerful expressiveness.     Broadband Diffusion: Lags from Vintage Capital, Learning by Doing, Information Barriers and Network Effects

    This paper examines the factors that affect the uptake of broadband in the residential and SME markets. We searched the economics literature on diffusion theory and identified five different models that potentially provide insights into the broadband phenomenon. These models were applied to the New Zealand market using detailed product and market data from an index ISP and the major telecommunications network provider which we consider representative of the market as a whole.We find evidence to suggest that the adoption of ADSL the dominant broadband technology in New Zealand is driven differently in the residential and SME markets. SMEs pay a fixed fee for each telephone circuit plus a toll tariff for all calls including local calls. An SME with multiple computers accessing the Internet requiring multiple telephone lines or with a reasonable level of traffic generating toll charges can cost-justify prematurely retiringmodem capital and introducing ADSL as there are immediate cost benefits. However an SME with little traffic and only one telephone line may still find that dial-up modems provide adequate service at a lower price
