TLAD 2011 Proceedings:9th international workshop on teaching, learning and assesment of databases (TLAD)
This is the ninth in the series of highly successful international workshops on the Teaching, Learning and Assessment of Databases (TLAD 2011), which once again is held as a workshop of BNCOD 2011 - the 28th British National Conference on Databases. TLAD 2011 is held on the 11th July at Manchester University, just before BNCOD, and hopes to be just as successful as its predecessors.The teaching of databases is central to all Computing Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and Information Technology courses, and this year, the workshop aims to continue the tradition of bringing together both database teachers and researchers, in order to share good learning, teaching and assessment practice and experience, and further the growing community amongst database academics. As well as attracting academics from the UK community, the workshop has also been successful in attracting academics from the wider international community, through serving on the programme committee, and attending and presenting papers.Due to the healthy number of high quality submissions this year, the workshop will present eight peer reviewed papers. Of these, six will be presented as full papers and two as short papers. These papers cover a number of themes, including: the teaching of data mining and data warehousing, databases and the cloud, and novel uses of technology in teaching and assessment. It is expected that these papers will stimulate discussion at the workshop itself and beyond. This year, the focus on providing a forum for discussion is enhanced through a panel discussion on assessment in database modules, with David Nelson (of the University of Sunderland), Al Monger (of Southampton Solent University) and Charles Boisvert (of Sheffield Hallam University) as the expert panel

iFair: Learning Individually Fair Data Representations for Algorithmic Decision Making
People are rated and ranked, towards algorithmic decision making in an
increasing number of applications, typically based on machine learning.
Research on how to incorporate fairness into such tasks has prevalently pursued
the paradigm of group fairness: giving adequate success rates to specifically
protected groups. In contrast, the alternative paradigm of individual fairness
has received relatively little attention, and this paper advances this less
explored direction. The paper introduces a method for probabilistically mapping
user records into a low-rank representation that reconciles individual fairness
and the utility of classifiers and rankings in downstream applications. Our
notion of individual fairness requires that users who are similar in all
task-relevant attributes such as job qualification, and disregarding all
potentially discriminating attributes such as gender, should have similar
outcomes. We demonstrate the versatility of our method by applying it to
classification and learning-to-rank tasks on a variety of real-world datasets.
Our experiments show substantial improvements over the best prior work for this

Job creation and regional change under New Labour : a shift-share analysis
The paper examines changes in UK regional employment during the period of the New Labour administration, 1997–2010, with the Blair and Brown administrations considered separately. The paper employs a shift-share analysis of workplace employment data by industry and subregion, using annual data from the UK Labour Force Survey. The results reveal significant regional shifts, with interesting spatial dynamics in and around the capital and resilient employment growth in the provinces
Built to Last or Built Too Fast? Evaluating Prediction Models for Build Times
Automated builds are integral to the Continuous Integration (CI) software
development practice. In CI, developers are encouraged to integrate early and
often. However, long build times can be an issue when integrations are
frequent. This research focuses on finding a balance between integrating often
and keeping developers productive. We propose and analyze models that can
predict the build time of a job. Such models can help developers to better
manage their time and tasks. Also, project managers can explore different
factors to determine the best setup for a build job that will keep the build
wait time to an acceptable level. Software organizations transitioning to CI
practices can use the predictive models to anticipate build times before CI is
implemented. The research community can modify our predictive models to further
