3D modeling and visualization of utility networks
Most of the current 2D GIS representations are tied to the limits of the GIS software tools used and are, more properly, simplifications of the real aspects of the territory. The development of 3D GIS tools has brought to life by the belief that the description of the reality and the analysis of the phenomena that take place in it must be done in the proper dimensions. An important field of application of GIS software tools is the utility networks management. Existing software tools that support management and 3D visualisation of utility networks are powerful but very expansive. The aim of the project is to design a general network model that will be used to model an utility network and to visualise it in 3D. The general network model has been designed to be data source and platform independent. It can take data from OGC standard compliant data source like GeoDBMS and WFS Servers and can be enriched by a user defined set of attributes, making it suitable for every network analysis and management need. On the top of the general network model has been designed a geometrical model that transforms the general network model in a 3D model which can be displayed using a WebGL graphic engine. Hierarchical processing, editing and rendering of acquired geometry
La représentation des surfaces du monde réel dans la mémoire d’une machine peut désormais être obtenue automatiquement via divers périphériques de capture tels que les scanners 3D. Ces nouvelles sources de données, précises et rapides, amplifient de plusieurs ordres de grandeur la résolution des surfaces 3D, apportant un niveau de précision élevé pour les applications nécessitant des modèles numériques de surfaces telles que la conception assistée par ordinateur, la simulation physique, la réalité virtuelle, l’imagerie médicale, l’architecture, l’étude archéologique, les effets spéciaux, l’animation ou bien encore les jeux video. Malheureusement, la richesse de la géométrie produite par ces méthodes induit une grande, voire gigantesque masse de données à traiter, nécessitant de nouvelles structures de données et de nouveaux algorithmes capables de passer à l’échelle d’objets pouvant atteindre le milliard d’échantillons. Dans cette thèse, je propose des solutions performantes en temps et en espace aux problèmes de la modélisation, du traitement géométrique, de l’édition intéractive et de la visualisation de ces surfaces 3D complexes. La méthodologie adoptée pendant l’élaboration transverse de ces nouveaux algorithmes est articulée autour de 4 éléments clés : une approche hiérarchique systématique, une réduction locale de la dimension des problèmes, un principe d’échantillonage-reconstruction et une indépendance à l’énumération explicite des relations topologiques aussi appelée approche basée-points. En pratique, ce manuscrit propose un certain nombre de contributions, parmi lesquelles : une nouvelle structure hiérarchique hybride de partitionnement, l’Arbre Volume-Surface (VS-Tree) ainsi que de nouveaux algorithmes de simplification et de reconstruction ; un système d’édition intéractive de grands objets ; un noyau temps-réel de synthèse géométrique par raffinement et une structure multi-résolution offrant un rendu efficace de grands objets. Ces structures, algorithmes et systèmes forment une chaîne capable de traiter les objets en provenance du pipeline d’acquisition, qu’ils soient représentés par des nuages de points ou des maillages, possiblement non 2-variétés. Les solutions obtenues ont été appliquées avec succès aux données issues des divers domaines d’application précités.Digital representations of real-world surfaces can now be obtained automatically using various acquisition devices such as 3D scanners and stereo camera systems. These new fast and accurate data sources increase 3D surface resolution by several orders of magnitude, borrowing higher precision to applications which require digital surfaces. All major computer graphics applications can take benefit of this automatic modeling process, including: computer-aided design, physical simulation, virtual reality, medical imaging, architecture, archaeological study, special effects, computer animation and video games. Unfortunately, the richness of the geometry produced by these media comes at the price of a large, possibility gigantic, amount of data which requires new efficient data structures and algorithms offering scalability for processing such objects. This thesis proposes time and space efficient solutions for modeling, editing and rendering such complex surfaces, solving these problems with new algorithms sharing 4 fundamental elements: a systematic hierarchical approach, a local dimension reduction, a sampling-reconstruction paradigm and a pointbased basis. Basically, this manuscript proposes several contributions, including: a new hierarchical space subdivision structure, the Volume-Surface Tree, for geometry processing such as simplification and reconstruction; a streaming system featuring new algorithms for interactive editing of large objects, an appearancepreserving multiresolution structure for efficient rendering of large point-based surfaces, and a generic kernel for real-time geometry synthesis by refinement. These elements form a pipeline able to process acquired geometry, either represented by point clouds or non-manifold meshes. Avionics graphics hardware performance prediction with machine learning
Within the strongly regulated avionic engineering field, conventional graphical desktop hardware and software application programming interface (API) cannot be used because they do not conform to the avionic certification standards. We observe the need for better avionic graphical hardware, but system engineers lack system design tools related to graphical hardware. The endorsement of an optimal hardware architecture by estimating the performance of a graphical software, when a stable rendering engine does not yet exist, represents a major challenge. As proven by previous hardware emulation tools, there is also a potential for development cost reduction, by enabling developers to have a first estimation of the performance of its graphical engine early in the development cycle. In this paper, we propose to replace expensive development platforms by predictive software running on a desktop computer. More precisely, we present a system design tool that helps predict the rendering performance of graphical hardware based on the OpenGL Safety Critical API. First, we create nonparametric models of the underlying hardware, with machine learning, by analyzing the instantaneous frames per second (FPS) of the rendering of a synthetic 3D scene and by drawing multiple times with various characteristics that are typically found in synthetic vision applications. The number of characteristic combinations used during this supervised training phase is a subset of all possible combinations, but performance predictions can be arbitrarily extrapolated. To validate our models, we render an industrial scene with characteristic combinations not used during the training phase and we compare the predictions to those real values. We find a median prediction error of less than 4 FPS
Gaze-Based Human-Robot Interaction by the Brunswick Model
We present a new paradigm for human-robot interaction based on social signal processing, and in particular on the Brunswick model. Originally, the Brunswick model copes with face-to-face dyadic interaction, assuming that the interactants are communicating through a continuous exchange of non verbal social signals, in addition to the spoken messages. Social signals have to be interpreted, thanks to a proper recognition phase that considers visual and audio information. The Brunswick model allows to quantitatively evaluate the quality of the interaction using statistical tools which measure how effective is the recognition phase. In this paper we cast this theory when one of the interactants is a robot; in this case, the recognition phase performed by the robot and the human have to be revised w.r.t. the original model. The model is applied to Berrick, a recent open-source low-cost robotic head platform, where the gazing is the social signal to be considered
Adaptivity of 3D web content in web-based virtual museums : a quality of service and quality of experience perspective
The 3D Web emerged as an agglomeration of technologies that brought the third dimension to the World Wide Web. Its forms spanned from being systems with limited 3D capabilities to complete and complex Web-Based Virtual Worlds.
The advent of the 3D Web provided great opportunities to museums by giving them an innovative medium to disseminate collections' information and associated interpretations in the form of digital artefacts, and virtual reconstructions thus leading to a new revolutionary way in cultural heritage curation, preservation and dissemination thereby reaching a wider audience.
This audience consumes 3D Web material on a myriad of devices (mobile devices, tablets and personal computers) and network regimes (WiFi, 4G, 3G, etc.). Choreographing and presenting 3D Web components across all these heterogeneous platforms and network regimes present a significant challenge yet to overcome.
The challenge is to achieve a good user Quality of Experience (QoE) across all these platforms. This means that different levels of fidelity of media may be appropriate. Therefore, servers hosting those media types need to adapt to the capabilities of a wide range of networks and devices.
To achieve this, the research contributes the design and implementation of Hannibal, an adaptive QoS & QoE-aware engine that allows Web-Based Virtual Museums to deliver the best possible user experience across those platforms.
In order to ensure effective adaptivity of 3D content, this research furthers the understanding of the 3D web in terms of Quality of Service (QoS) through empirical investigations studying how 3D Web components perform and what are their bottlenecks and in terms of QoE studying the subjective perception of fidelity of 3D Digital Heritage artefacts. Methods for Light Field Display Profiling and Scalable Super-Multiview Video Coding
Light field 3D displays reproduce the light field of real or synthetic scenes, as observed by multiple viewers, without the necessity of wearing 3D glasses. Reproducing light fields is a technically challenging task in terms of optical setup, content creation, distributed rendering, among others; however, the impressive visual quality of hologramlike scenes, in full color, with real-time frame rates, and over a very wide field of view justifies the complexity involved. Seeing objects popping far out from the screen plane without glasses impresses even those viewers who have experienced other 3D displays before.Content for these displays can either be synthetic or real. The creation of synthetic (rendered) content is relatively well understood and used in practice. Depending on the technique used, rendering has its own complexities, quite similar to the complexity of rendering techniques for 2D displays. While rendering can be used in many use-cases, the holy grail of all 3D display technologies is to become the future 3DTVs, ending up in each living room and showing realistic 3D content without glasses. Capturing, transmitting, and rendering live scenes as light fields is extremely challenging, and it is necessary if we are about to experience light field 3D television showing real people and natural scenes, or realistic 3D video conferencing with real eye-contact.In order to provide the required realism, light field displays aim to provide a wide field of view (up to 180°), while reproducing up to ~80 MPixels nowadays. Building gigapixel light field displays is realistic in the next few years. Likewise, capturing live light fields involves using many synchronized cameras that cover the same display wide field of view and provide the same high pixel count. Therefore, light field capture and content creation has to be well optimized with respect to the targeted display technologies. Two major challenges in this process are addressed in this dissertation.The first challenge is how to characterize the display in terms of its capabilities to create light fields, that is how to profile the display in question. In clearer terms this boils down to finding the equivalent spatial resolution, which is similar to the screen resolution of 2D displays, and angular resolution, which describes the smallest angle, the color of which the display can control individually. Light field is formalized as 4D approximation of the plenoptic function in terms of geometrical optics through spatiallylocalized and angularly-directed light rays in the so-called ray space. Plenoptic Sampling Theory provides the required conditions to sample and reconstruct light fields. Subsequently, light field displays can be characterized in the Fourier domain by the effective display bandwidth they support. In the thesis, a methodology for displayspecific light field analysis is proposed. It regards the display as a signal processing channel and analyses it as such in spectral domain. As a result, one is able to derive the display throughput (i.e. the display bandwidth) and, subsequently, the optimal camera configuration to efficiently capture and filter light fields before displaying them.While the geometrical topology of optical light sources in projection-based light field displays can be used to theoretically derive display bandwidth, and its spatial and angular resolution, in many cases this topology is not available to the user. Furthermore, there are many implementation details which cause the display to deviate from its theoretical model. In such cases, profiling light field displays in terms of spatial and angular resolution has to be done by measurements. Measurement methods that involve the display showing specific test patterns, which are then captured by a single static or moving camera, are proposed in the thesis. Determining the effective spatial and angular resolution of a light field display is then based on an automated analysis of the captured images, as they are reproduced by the display, in the frequency domain. The analysis reveals the empirical limits of the display in terms of pass-band both in the spatial and angular dimension. Furthermore, the spatial resolution measurements are validated by subjective tests confirming that the results are in line with the smallest features human observers can perceive on the same display. The resolution values obtained can be used to design the optimal capture setup for the display in question.The second challenge is related with the massive number of views and pixels captured that have to be transmitted to the display. It clearly requires effective and efficient compression techniques to fit in the bandwidth available, as an uncompressed representation of such a super-multiview video could easily consume ~20 gigabits per second with today’s displays. Due to the high number of light rays to be captured, transmitted and rendered, distributed systems are necessary for both capturing and rendering the light field. During the first attempts to implement real-time light field capturing, transmission and rendering using a brute force approach, limitations became apparent. Still, due to the best possible image quality achievable with dense multi-camera light field capturing and light ray interpolation, this approach was chosen as the basis of further work, despite the massive amount of bandwidth needed. Decompression of all camera images in all rendering nodes, however, is prohibitively time consuming and is not scalable. After analyzing the light field interpolation process and the data-access patterns typical in a distributed light field rendering system, an approach to reduce the amount of data required in the rendering nodes has been proposed. This approach, on the other hand, requires rectangular parts (typically vertical bars in case of a Horizontal Parallax Only light field display) of the captured images to be available in the rendering nodes, which might be exploited to reduce the time spent with decompression of video streams. However, partial decoding is not readily supported by common image / video codecs. In the thesis, approaches aimed at achieving partial decoding are proposed for H.264, HEVC, JPEG and JPEG2000 and the results are compared.The results of the thesis on display profiling facilitate the design of optimal camera setups for capturing scenes to be reproduced on 3D light field displays. The developed super-multiview content encoding also facilitates light field rendering in real-time. This makes live light field transmission and real-time teleconferencing possible in a scalable way, using any number of cameras, and at the spatial and angular resolution the display actually needs for achieving a compelling visual experience

Requiere asimilar diversas técnicas que derivan de principios teóricos, sin cuyo conocimiento será difÃcil utilizar bien estas técnicas y también se necesita una buena formación visual, la capacidad de observar, de razonar visualmente, de reflexionar sobre los causas que subyacen a los fenómenos visuales, a las apariencias de objetos y escenarios familares. La finalidad de este libro, que se publica en paralelo con otro sobre simulación visual de materiales, es abordar todos estos temas en profundidad, de un modo coherente. En su Iª parte, ofrece una visión general de los fundamentos teóricos de las técnicas de simulación visual, tanto por lo que hace a los conceptos y recursos disponibles, como a las capacidades y lÃmitaciones de nuestro sistema visual. En su IIº parte, se desarrollan ejemplos de aplicación que faciliten su asimilación y su utilización práctica
