    Teaching Language in Cross-Disciplinary Contexts

    Cross-disciplinarity is more and more important because of the wide specialization demanded by job markets. Separate disciplines are demanded with increasing urgency to integrate their concepts and methods in teaching and research. Only through the intersection of different disciplines can progress and innovation be achieved in specific knowledge areas. It is said that much leading science nowadays progresses not by placing one brick upon the other within a single discipline, but by solving complex problems that cut across many disciplines. Language teaching has to conform to what today’s society demands from professional occupations: a cross-disciplinary role with a result-oriented focus. Cognitive science can provide an adequate model for cross-disciplinary investigation because it integrates linguistic, psychological, philosophical, neurological, computer science, anthropological and historical contributions. Within the cognitive paradigm, a linguistic term does not exclusively exist because of its relations with others but also of culture-based and conventionalized background knowledge. We will use and rely on principles and models of cognitive linguistics to apply and handle language teaching in cross-disciplinary contexts

    Reflexive observations and observations of reflexivity: such agendas are by now standard practice in anthropology. Dynamic feedback loops between self and other, cause and effect, represented and representamen may no longer seem surprising; but, in spite of our enhanced awareness, little deliberate attention is devoted to modeling or grounding such phenomena. Attending to both linguistic and extra-linguistic modalities of chiasmus (the X figure), a group of anthropologists has recently embraced this challenge. Applied to contemporary problems in linguistic anthropology, chiasmus functions to highlight and enhance relationships of interdependence or symbiosis between contraries, including anthropology’s four fields, the nature of human being and facets of being human

    Autism, the Integrations of 'Difference' and the Origins of Modern Human Behaviour

    It is proposed here that the archaeological evidence for the emergence of 'modern behaviour' (160,000-40,000 bp) can best be explained as the rise of cognitive variation within populations through social mechanisms for integrating 'different minds', rather than by the development of a single 'modern human mind'. Autism and the autistic spectrum within human populations are used as an example of 'different minds' which when integrated within society can confer various selective benefits. It is proposed that social mechanisms for incorporating autistic difference are visible in the archaeological record and that these develop sporadically from 160,000 years bp in association with evidence for their consequences in terms of technological innovations, improved efficiency in technological and natural spheres and innovative thinking. Whilst other explanations for the emergence Of modern human behaviour may also contribute to observed changes, it is argued that the incorporation of cognitive differences played a significant role in the technological, social and symbolic expression of 'modern' behaviour

    Changing the name of the NBPF/DUF1220 domain to the Olduvai domain

    We are jointly proposing a new name for a protein domain of approximately 65 amino acids that has been previously termed NBPF or DUF1220. Our two labs independently reported the initial studies of this domain, which is encoded almost entirely within a single gene family. The name Neuroblastoma Breakpoint Family (NBPF) was applied to this gene family when the first identified member of the family was found to be interrupted in an individual with neuroblastoma. Prior to this discovery, the PFAM database had termed the domain DUF1220, denoting it as one of many protein domains of unknown function. It has been PFAM’s intention to use “DUF” nomenclature to serve only as a temporary placeholder until more appropriate names are proposed based on research findings. We believe that additional studies of this domain, primarily from our laboratories over the past 10 years, have resulted in furthering our understanding of these sequences to the point where proposing a new name for this domain is warranted. Because of considerable data linking the domain to human-specific evolution, brain expansion and cognition, we believe a name reflecting these findings would be appropriate. With this in mind, we have chosen to name the domain (and the repeat that encodes it) Olduvai. The gene family will remain as NBPF for now. The primary domain subtypes will retain their previously assigned names (e.g. CON1-3; HLS1-3), and the three-domain block that expanded dramatically in the human lineage will be termed the Olduvai triplet. The new name refers to Olduvai Gorge, which is a site in East Africa that has been the source of major anthropological discoveries in the early-mid 1900’s. We also chose the name as a tribute to the scientists who made important contributions to the early studies of human origins and our African genesis
