    Antecedents and Catalysts for Developing a Healthcare Analytic Capability

    Analytics is the most advanced component of business intelligence. An analytic capability enables fact-based decisions using quantitative models. These models draw on statistical and quantitative analysis of large data repositories. An analytic capability is especially critical in healthcare because lives are at stake and there is intense pressure to reduce costs and improve efficiency. This study proposes antecedents and catalysts for developing an analytic capability based on an in-depth study of the cardiac surgical programs of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The VHA has developed an analytic capability for patient treatment and administrative decision-making. The models rely on the input of clinical data from multiple facilities. However, a diversity of standards, infrastructure, staff and patient mix result in misunderstood data definitions, errors in data entry, incomplete data sets, and conflicts between multiple systems. Consequently, data aggregation and data interoperability at both the systemic and semantic levels are challenging. Catalysts for developing an analytic capability, derived from the VHA case study, include a community of practice and patient case reassessment practices. Antecedents of an analytic capability include robust data aggregation and cleaning practices and establishment of data standards followed by judicious tailoring of analytic outputs to decision making needs

    Health Informatics in the Classroom: An Empirical Study to Investigate Higher Education\u27s Response to Healthcare Transformation

    The explosive advances in information technology combined with the current climate for health care reform have intensified the need for skilled individuals who can develop, understand, and manage medical information systems in organizations. Health Informatics facilitates quality care at a reasonable cost by allowing access to the right data by the right people at the right time. A new generation of professionals, trained in health informatics, can expedite the transformation in healthcare delivery. This study examines health informatics, big data in the field of healthcare, and the distinction between clinical and non-clinical health informatics. Curricula, of different scopes and depths, offered by higher education, are examined and questions of what, who, where in regard to offerings in the healthcare arena are addressed. Finally, we make suggestions for actions that academia can take to assure that public health professionals have the knowledge, tools, and training to advance the mission of public health. The results of this study should be of interest to those, who directly or indirectly, would benefit of educating a new generation of the workforce in health informatics

    Leadership Styles and Firms’ Innovation, Mediating Role of Absorptive Capacity: Empirical Evidence from Emerging Economy

    This study contends explicitly that leadership styles (transformational and transactional) are positioned as a pylon for firms’ innovation performance. Further, this study contemplates the intermediating inspiration of absorptive capacity (potential and realized) linking leadership styles (transformational and transactional) and firms’ innovation. Data was collected from 301 permanent employees working in Pakistani manufacturing firms (food and tobacco) through the self-administered questionnaires to test the proposed hypothesis of this study. The study's findings demonstrate a positive influence of leadership styles (transformational and transactional) on the firm's innovative performance. Moreover, both absorptive capacity dimensions (potential and realized) mediate the relationship between leadership styles (transformational and transactional) and innovative performance. This study demonstrates that both leadership styles (transformational and transactional) provide phenomenal path routes to augment firms’ innovation. Overall, this study contributed a legitimate illustration of leadership styles strengthening firms’ innovation, specifically transactional leadership style, encouraging results within the developing economy perspective

    There has been an increasing emphasis on big data analytics (BDA) in e-commerce in recent years. However, it remains poorly-explored as a concept, which obstructs its theoretical and practical development. This position paper explores BDA in e-commerce by drawing on a systematic review of the literature. The paper presents an interpretive framework that explores the definitional aspects, distinctive characteristics, types, business value and challenges of BDA in the e-commerce landscape. The paper also triggers broader discussions regarding future research challenges and opportunities in theory and practice. Overall, the findings of the study synthesize diverse BDA concepts (e.g., definition of big data, types, nature, business value and relevant theories) that provide deeper insights along the cross-cutting analytics applications in e-commerce

    Beyond Knowledge Integration Barriers in ERP Implementations: An Institutional Approach

    The objective of the article is to go beyond the knowledge integration barriers in ERP implementations by analyzing structural, technological, intellectual and socioemotional barriers that appear during an ERP implementation project. Using an action research methodology, the article provides some hints highlighting the knowledge integration process, and proposing an Institutional Model of ERP Knowledge Integration where ERP “best-practices” affect and are affected by institutional logics through legitimacy and isomorphism mechanisms, showing two processes of institutionalization: (1) processes that challenge knowledge integration barriers by embedding ERP “best-practices” in the expected formal functioning of the organization as well as in the routines and habits of employees; and (2) processes that operate as drivers of evolution and change by embedding the institutional logics and new requirements within ERP “best-practices”

    Factors Influencing Willingness To Adopt Advanced Analytics In Small Businesses

    Business analytics (BA) continues to be one of the top technology trends in recent years as well as one of the top priorities for CIO’s in many large enterprises. Business analytic tools can significantly help small businesses in quickly responding to changing market conditions and improving their organizational performance. However, prior studies report that the adoption rate of business analytics in small businesses is extremely low such that only 32 percent small businesses have adopted Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics solutions till now (SMB Group, 2018). As small businesses constitute a major force in the US economy, a slow rate of adoption of significant technological innovations, such as BA, may be a critical concern that can affect the economy in the longer run. Despite this, the extant small business literature as well as the information systems literature fails to provide an understanding of why small businesses are not receptive to current BA trends. Therefore, drawing upon the theoretical underpinnings of organizing vision theory, strategic orientation literature, and theory of upper echelon, this study investigates the willingness of small businesses to adopt newer innovations in BA. More specifically, this study investigates the impact of the reception of organizing vision of BA by owner managers, learning orientation of small businesses, analytics orientation of small businesses, and personal characteristics of owner-mangers on small businesses’ willingness to adopt BA. By drawing its motivation from prior strategic orientation and v BA literature, this study is also among the first one to propose, formally develop, and validate the measurement construct of analytics orientation
