Magnetic Suspension and Balance Systems: A Comprehensive, Annotated Bibliography

This bibliography contains 301 entries. Results are reported of recent studies aimed at increasing the research capabilities of magnetic suspension and balance systems; e.g., increasing force and torque capability, increasing angle of attack capability, and increasing overall system reliability. The problem is addressed of scaling from the relatively small size of existing systems to much larger sizes. The purpose of the bibliography is to provide an up-to-date list of publications that might be helpful to persons interested in magnetic suspension and balance systems for use in wind tunnels. The arrangement is generally chronological by date of presentation. However, papers presented at conferences or meetings are placed under dates of presentation. The numbers assigned to many of the citations have been changed from those used in the previous bibliography. This has been done in order to allow outdated citations to be removed and some recently discovered older works to be included in their proper chronological order. Author, source, and subject indexes are included in order to increase the usefulness of this compilation

Selective Guide to Literature on Aerospace Engineering

The term aerospace incorporates all aspects of flight including aviation, aeronautics, and astronautics. This ASEE Selective Guide to Literature on Aerospace Engineering identifies essential sources of information according to their function and format. The Guide will be useful for practicing engineers, engineering faculty, and engineering students and all who need to know where to look for information on a variety of topics in aerospace engineering. Librarians, library and information science students, and other information professionals will find it useful for planning access services and for collection development. From the launching of balloons in the 19th century to the airplane and spacecraft flights of this century, the aerospace literature has recorded scientific, governmental, industrial, and commercial efforts and achievements. The literature of aerospace engineering over the past 100 years remains of current interest, as knowledge in this field is cumulative and relevant to both historians and practitioners. The entire aerospace effort continues to command a high profile in modern society and is of benefit to people everywhere. As the field of aerospace engineering continues to grow and change, it will be even more important to track its activities and accomplishments through the literature sources listed here. This Guide includes bibliographies, guides to the literature, indexes and abstracts, Internet resources, encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, directories, specifications and standards, government documents, statistical sources, selected periodicals, and selected conference proceedings. Selections are based on the compilers\u27 knowledge and experience in engineering librarianship and interlibrary loan services. Members of the ASEE Engineering Libraries Division and the SLA Aerospace and Engineering Divisions were generous with their input and suggestions. Publishers were occasionally inserted as assumed corporate authors. One such example is Jane\u27s Information Group. The resulting advantage is that all publications for a publisher were then grouped together

Engineering derivatives from biological systems for advanced aerospace applications

The present study consisted of a literature survey, a survey of researchers, and a workshop on bionics. These tasks produced an extensive annotated bibliography of bionics research (282 citations), a directory of bionics researchers, and a workshop report on specific bionics research topics applicable to space technology. These deliverables are included as Appendix A, Appendix B, and Section 5.0, respectively. To provide organization to this highly interdisciplinary field and to serve as a guide for interested researchers, we have also prepared a taxonomy or classification of the various subelements of natural engineering systems. Finally, we have synthesized the results of the various components of this study into a discussion of the most promising opportunities for accelerated research, seeking solutions which apply engineering principles from natural systems to advanced aerospace problems. A discussion of opportunities within the areas of materials, structures, sensors, information processing, robotics, autonomous systems, life support systems, and aeronautics is given. Following the conclusions are six discipline summaries that highlight the potential benefits of research in these areas for NASA's space technology programs

Healthy coastal habitats are not only important ecologically; they also support healthy coastal communities and improve the quality of people’s lives. Despite their many benefits and values, coastal habitats have been systematically modified, degraded, and destroyed throughout the United States and its protectorates beginning with European colonization in the 1600’s (Dahl 1990). As a result, many coastal habitats around the United States are in desperate need of restoration. Smith (David C.) Papers, 1833-2011

David Clayton Smith was born in Lewiston, Maine in 1929. He received a B.S. in 1955 at Farmington State Teachers College. He received an M.Ed. in 1956 and an M.A. in history and government in 1958 from the University of Maine. He received a Ph.D. in history in 1965 from Cornell University. He taught five years at Hobart and William Smith College, Geneva, N.Y., then returned to teach at the University of Maine. In 1965 he joined the University of Maine history faculty. He is a widely recognized historian and lectured nationally and internationally on such topics as history, political science, climatology, agriculture, paper industry, literature, and popular culture. In 1986 he wrote a biography of H.G. Wells which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. David C. Smith died on November 7, 2009. The records mainly contain textual information created and curated by educator and historian David C. Smith. Smith was a widely recognized historian and lectured nationally and internationally on such topics as history, political science, climatology, agriculture, paper industry, literature, and popular culture. An Economic and Institutional Analysis of Maize Research in Kenya

Maize, the most important food crop in Kenya, contributes 44 percent of the per-capita, calorie intake. Increases in maize production over the past three decades have been attributed to the availability and adoption of modern maize techniques, especially fertilizer and hybrid seed. This paper estimates the rate of return to maize research to be 53 to 61 percent, and reveals that his impact was aided by complementary agricultural extension and seed multiplication and distribution programs. The paper describes the institutional framework that may have led to one of Kenya’s agricultural research success stories.
