    Traffic sign detection using a cascade method with fast feature extraction and saliency test

    Automatic traffic sign detection is challenging due to the complexity of scene images, and fast detection is required in real applications such as driver assistance systems. In this paper, we propose a fast traffic sign detection method based on a cascade method with saliency test and neighboring scale awareness. In the cascade method, feature maps of several channels are extracted efficiently using approximation techniques. Sliding windows are pruned hierarchically using coarse-to-fine classifiers and the correlation between neighboring scales. The cascade system has only one free parameter, while the multiple thresholds are selected by a data-driven approach. To further increase speed, we also use a novel saliency test based on mid-level features to pre-prune background windows. Experiments on two public traffic sign data sets show that the proposed method achieves competing performance and runs 27 times as fast as most of the state-of-the-art methods

    Feature Surfaces in Symmetric Tensor Fields Based on Eigenvalue Manifold

    Three-dimensional symmetric tensor fields have a wide range of applications in solid and fluid mechanics. Recent advances in the (topological) analysis of 3D symmetric tensor fields focus on degenerate tensors which form curves. In this paper, we introduce a number of feature surfaces, such as neutral surfaces and traceless surfaces, into tensor field analysis, based on the notion of eigenvalue manifold. Neutral surfaces are the boundary between linear tensors and planar tensors, and the traceless surfaces are the boundary between tensors of positive traces and those of negative traces. Degenerate curves, neutral surfaces, and traceless surfaces together form a partition of the eigenvalue manifold, which provides a more complete tensor field analysis than degenerate curves alone. We also extract and visualize the isosurfaces of tensor modes, tensor isotropy, and tensor magnitude, which we have found useful for domain applications in fluid and solid mechanics. Extracting neutral and traceless surfaces using the Marching Tetrahedra method can lead to the loss of geometric and topological details, which can lead to false physical interpretation. To robustly extract neutral surfaces and traceless surfaces, we develop a polynomial description of them which enables us to borrow techniques from algebraic surface extraction, a topic well-researched by the computer-aided design (CAD) community as well as the algebraic geometry community. In addition, we adapt the surface extraction technique, called A-patches, to improve the speed of finding degenerate curves. Finally, we apply our analysis to data from solid and fluid mechanics as well as scalar field analysis

    AbstractWe design a kinetic data structure for detecting collisions between two simple polygons in motion. In order to do so, we create a planar subdivision of the free space between the two polygons, called the external relative geodesic triangulation, which certifies their disjointness. We show how this subdivision can be maintained as a kinetic data structure when the polygons are moving, and analyze its performance in the kinetic setting

    Robust 2D location of interest points by accumulation

    Various interest point and corner definitions were proposed in the past with associated detection algorithms. We propose an intuitive and novel detection algorithm for finding the location of such features in an image. The detection is based on the edges in the original image. Interest points are detected as accumulation points where several edge tangent lines in a neighborhood are crossing. Edge connectivity is not used and thus detected interest points are robust to partial edges, outliers and edge extraction failures at junctions. One advantage of the approach is that detected interest points are not shifted in location when the original image is smoothed compared with other approaches. Experiments performed on Oxford and Cambridge reference databases allow us to show that the proposed detection algorithm performs better than 9 existing interest point detectors in terms of repeatability from multiple camera views

    Large bichromatic point sets admit empty monochromatic 4-gons

    We consider a variation of a problem stated by Erd˝os and Szekeres in 1935 about the existence of a number fES(k) such that any set S of at least fES(k) points in general position in the plane has a subset of k points that are the vertices of a convex k-gon. In our setting the points of S are colored, and we say that a (not necessarily convex) spanned polygon is monochromatic if all its vertices have the same color. Moreover, a polygon is called empty if it does not contain any points of S in its interior. We show that any bichromatic set of n ≥ 5044 points in R2 in general position determines at least one empty, monochromatic quadrilateral (and thus linearly many).Postprint (published version
