    CacophonyViz: Visualisation of Birdsong Derived Ecological Health Indicators

    The purpose of this work was to create an easy to interpret visualisation of a simple index that represents the quantity and quality of bird life in New Zealand. The index was calculated from an algorithm that assigned various weights to each species of bird. This work is important as it forms a part of the ongoing work by the Cacophony Project which aims to eradicate pests that currently destroy New Zealand native birds and their habitat. The map will be used to promote the Cacophony project to a wide public audience and encourage their participation by giving relevant feedback on the effects of intervention such as planting and trapping in their communities. The Design Science methodology guided this work through the creation of a series of prototypes that through their evaluation built on lessons learnt at each stage resulting in a final artifact that successfully displayed the index at various locations across a map of New Zealand. It is concluded that the artifact is ready and suitable for deployment once the availability of real data from the automatic analysis of audio recordings from multiple locations becomes available

    Pet sense: sistema de monitorização de animais em hospitalização

    The observation and treatment of animals in veterinary hospitals is still very dependent on manual procedures, including the collection of vital signs (temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure). These manual procedures are time-consuming and invasive, affecting the animal’s well-being. In this work, we purpose the use of IoT technologies to monitor animals in hospitalization, wearing sensors to collect vitals, and low-cost hardware to forward them into a cloud backend that analyses and stores data. The history of observed vitals and alarms can be accessed in the web, included in the Pet Universal software suite. The overall architecture follows a stream processing approach, using telemetry protocols to transport data, and Apache Kafka Streams to analyse streams and trigger alarms on potential hazard conditions. The system was fully implemented, although with laboratory sensors to emulate the smart devices to be worn by the animals. We were able to implement a data gathering and processing pipeline and integrate with the existing clinical management information system. The proposed solution can offer a practical way for long-term monitoring and detect abnormal values of temperature and heart rate in hospitalized animals, taking into consideration the characteristics of the monitored individual (species and state).A observação e tratamento de animais hospitalizados continua muito dependente de procedimentos manuais, especialmente no que diz respeito à colheita de sinais vitais (temperatura, frequência cardíaca, frequência respiratória e pressão arterial). Estes procedimentos manuais são dispendiosos em termos de tempo e afetam o bem-estar do animal. Neste projeto, propomos o recurso a tecnologias IoT para monitorizar animais hospitalizados equipados com sensores que medem sinais vitais, com hardware acessível, e envio dos dados para um serviço na cloud que os analisa e armazena. O histórico dos valores e alarmes podem ser acedidos na web e incluídos na plataforma comercial da Pet Universal. A arquitetura geral segue uma abordagem de processamento funcional, usando protocolos de telemetria para transportar dados e Apache Kafka Streams, analisando e lançando alarmes sobre potenciais condições de risco de acordo com a temperatura e pulsação. O sistema foi totalmente implementado, embora com sensores de laboratório para simular os dispositivos a serem usados pelos animais. Conseguimos implementar um circuito de colheita e processamento de dados e integrar com o sistema de gestão clínica já existente. A solução proposta oferece uma forma prática de monitorização continuada e de deteção de valores anormais de temperatura e frequência cardíaca em animais hospitalizados, tomando em conta as características do indivíduo monitorado (espécie e estado).Mestrado em Engenharia Informátic

    Mapping the Structure and Evolution of Software Testing Research Over the Past Three Decades

    Background: The field of software testing is growing and rapidly-evolving. Aims: Based on keywords assigned to publications, we seek to identify predominant research topics and understand how they are connected and have evolved. Method: We apply co-word analysis to map the topology of testing research as a network where author-assigned keywords are connected by edges indicating co-occurrence in publications. Keywords are clustered based on edge density and frequency of connection. We examine the most popular keywords, summarize clusters into high-level research topics, examine how topics connect, and examine how the field is changing. Results: Testing research can be divided into 16 high-level topics and 18 subtopics. Creation guidance, automated test generation, evolution and maintenance, and test oracles have particularly strong connections to other topics, highlighting their multidisciplinary nature. Emerging keywords relate to web and mobile apps, machine learning, energy consumption, automated program repair and test generation, while emerging connections have formed between web apps, test oracles, and machine learning with many topics. Random and requirements-based testing show potential decline. Conclusions: Our observations, advice, and map data offer a deeper understanding of the field and inspiration regarding challenges and connections to explore.Comment: To appear, Journal of Systems and Softwar

    Survey on geographic visual display techniques in epidemiology: Taxonomy and characterization

    Many works have been done on the topic of Geographic Visual Display with different objectives and approaches. There are studies to compare the traditional cartography techniques (the traditional term of Geographic Visual Display (GVD) without Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)) to Modern GIS which are also known as Geo-visualization, some literature differentiates and highlight the commonalities of features and architectures of different Geographic Visual Display tools (from layers and clusters to dot and color and more). Furthermore, with the existence of more advanced tools which support data exploration, few tasks are done to evaluate how those tools are used to handle complex and multivariate spatial-temporal data. Several test on usability and interactivity of tools toward user's needs or preferences, some even develop frameworks that address user's concern in a wide array of tasks, and others prove how these tools are able to stimulate the visual thought process and help in decision making or event prediction amongst decision-makers. This paper surveyed and categorized these research articles into 2 categories: Traditional Cartography (TC) and Geo-visualization (G). This paper will classify each category by their techniques and tasks that contribute to the significance of data representation in Geographic Visual Display and develop perspectives of each area and evaluating trends of Geographic Visual Display Techniques. Suggestions and ideas on what mechanisms can be used to improve and diversify Geographic Visual Display Techniques are provided at the end of this survey
