    Individual accessibility and travel possibilities: A literature review on time geography

    In the late 1960s, Torsten HĂ€gerstrand introduced the conceptual framework of time geography which can be deemed an elegant tool for analysing individual movement in space and time. About a decade later, the auspicious time-geographic research has gradually lost favour, mainly due to the unavailability of robust geocomputational tools and the lack of georeferenced individual-level travel data. It was only from the early 1990s that new GISbased research gave evidence of resurgence in popularity of the field. From that time on, several researchers have steadily been publishing work at the intersection of time geography, disaggregate travel modeling, and GI-science. This paper reviews the most important timegeographic contributions. From this exercise, some prevailing research gaps are deduced and a way to deal with these gaps is presented. In particular, we focus on space-time accessibility measures, geovisualisation of activity patterns, human extensibility and fuzzy space-time prisms in relation to CAD

    A GIS toolkit for measuring and mapping space-time accessibility from a place-based perspective

    This article introduces a novel geographical information system toolkit for measuring and mapping the accessibility of individuals to services. The toolkit contributes to earlier implementations by combining aspects of both place-based and person-based accessibility measures. To this end, place-based accessibility measures are derived from a person-based framework by considering space-time prisms that are centred at service facilities rather than individual anchor points. The implementation is also innovative by explicitly accounting for the opening hours of service delivery in its accessibility measurement. In addition, the toolkit is aimed to be user-friendly and to generate insightful and comprehensible results for non-technically oriented users, which is illustrated in a brief case study about library accessibility in Ghent (Belgium)

    Analyzing Trajectory Gaps for Possible Rendezvous: A Summary of Results

    Given trajectory data with gaps, we investigate methods to identify possible rendezvous regions. Societal applications include improving maritime safety and regulations. The challenges come from two aspects. If trajectory data are not available around the rendezvous then either linear or shortest-path interpolation may fail to detect the possible rendezvous. Furthermore, the problem is computationally expensive due to the large number of gaps and associated trajectories. In this paper, we first use the plane sweep algorithm as a baseline. Then we propose a new filtering framework using the concept of a space-time grid. Experimental results and case study on real-world maritime trajectory data show that the proposed approach substantially improves the Area Pruning Efficiency over the baseline technique

    HUMAN INTERACTIONS IN PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL SPACES: A GIS-BASED TIME-GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORATORY APPROACH

    Information and communication technologies (ICT) such as cell phone and the Internet have extended opportunities of human activities and interactions from physical spaces to virtual spaces. The relaxed spatio-temporal constraints on individual activities may affect human activity-travel patterns, social networks, and many other aspects of society. A challenge for research of human activities in the ICT age is to develop analytical environments that can help visualize and explore individual activities in virtual spaces and their mutual impacts with physical activities. This dissertation focuses on extending the time-geographic framework and developing a spatio-temporal exploratory environment in a space-time geographic information system (GIS) to facilitate research of human interactions in both physical and virtual spaces. In particular, this dissertation study addresses three research questions. First, it extends the time-geographic framework to assess the impacts of phone usage on potential face-to-face (F2F) meeting opportunities, as well as dynamic changes in potential F2F meeting opportunities over time. Secondly, this study extends the time-geographic framework to conceptualize and represent individual trajectories in an online social network space and to explore potential interaction opportunities among people in a virtual space. Thirdly, this study presents a spatio-temporal environment in a space-time GIS to facilitate exploration of the relationships between changes in physical proximity and changes in social closeness in a virtual space. The major contributions of this dissertation include: (1) advancing the time-geographic framework in its ability of exploring processes of virtual communication alerting physical activity opportunities; (2) extending some concepts of the classical time geography from a physical space to a virtual space for representing and exploring virtual interaction patterns; (3) developing a space-time GIS that is useful for exploring patterns of individual activities and interactions in both physical and virtual spaces, as well as the interactions between these two spaces

    Modeling movement probabilities within heterogeneous spatial fields

    Recent efforts have focused on modeling the internal structure of space-time prisms to estimate the unequal movement opportunities within. This paper further develops this area of research by formulating a model for field-based time geography that can be used to probabilistically model movement opportunities conditioned on underlying heterogeneous spatial fields. The development of field-based time geography draws heavily on well-established methods for cost-distance analysis, common to most GIS software packages. The field-based time geographic model is compared with two alternative approaches that are commonly employed to estimate probabilistic space-time prisms - (truncated) Brownian bridges and time geographic kernel density estimation. Using simulated scenarios it is demonstrated that only field-based time geography captures underlying heterogeneity in output movement probabilities. Field-based time geography has significant potential in the field of wildlife tracking (an example is provided), where Brownian bridge models are preferred, but fail to adequately capture underlying barriers to movement.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    A hybrid optical-wireless network for decimetre-level terrestrial positioning

    Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) are widely used for navigation and time distribution, features indispensable for critical infrastructure such as mobile communication networks, as well as emerging technologies like automated driving and sustainable energy grids. While GNSS can provide centimetre-level precision, GNSS receivers are prone to many-metre errors due to multipath propagation and obstructed view of the sky, which occur especially in urban areas where accurate positioning is needed most. Moreover, the vulnerabilities of GNSS, combined with the lack of a back-up system, pose a severe risk to GNSS-dependent technologies. Here, we demonstrate a terrestrial positioning system which is independent of GNSS and offers superior performance through a constellation of radio transmitters, connected and time-synchronised at the sub-nanosecond level through a fibre-optic Ethernet network. Employing optical and wireless transmission schemes similar to those encountered in mobile communication networks, and exploiting spectrally efficient virtual wideband signals, the detrimental effects of multipath propagation are mitigated, thus enabling robust decimetre-level positioning and sub-nanosecond timing in a multipath-prone outdoor environment. This work provides a glimpse of a future in which telecommunication networks provide not only connectivity, but also GNSS-independent timing and positioning services with unprecedented accuracy and reliability.Comment: 38 pages, 9 figures, 3 table

    Assessing overall network structure in regional innovation policies: a case study of cluster policy in the West Midlands in the UK

    Revisiting the theoretical roots of the key concepts of “embeddedness” and “networks” that underpin many recent regional innovation polices, this paper strives to achieve a more systematic understanding of the overall network structure of geographic agglomerations, which helps to form a more convincing model of regional development based on learning. This also helps to establish an analytical framework with indicators to assess the overall network structure in regional innovation policies. Employing the framework, the examination of cluster policy in the West Midlands highlights its weakness in addressing the overall cluster network structure and the contingent factors influencing the structure. The analysis suggests that there may be similar weaknesses in other regional innovation policies and the theories underpinning them as they share a common weakness in addressing the structural characteristics of overall networks
