    Hand and wrist configurations in patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

    The association between hand and wrist configurations was investigated in this study. The hand and wrist dimensions of sixty patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and sixty healthy control subjects were measured using specific anatomical landmarks. The palm width was significantly greater in the patient group. There was no significant difference in the hand length between the two groups. Both the wrist width and wrist depth were significantly greater in the patient group. The hand ratio and the wrist ratio were significantly smaller in the patient group indicating that the latter had squarer hands and wrists than the control group respectively. This suggests that the anatomy of the hand and wrist may predispose to carpal tunnel syndrome.peer-reviewe

    Spectral mapping of brain functional connectivity from diffusion imaging.

    Understanding the relationship between the dynamics of neural processes and the anatomical substrate of the brain is a central question in neuroscience. On the one hand, modern neuroimaging technologies, such as diffusion tensor imaging, can be used to construct structural graphs representing the architecture of white matter streamlines linking cortical and subcortical structures. On the other hand, temporal patterns of neural activity can be used to construct functional graphs representing temporal correlations between brain regions. Although some studies provide evidence that whole-brain functional connectivity is shaped by the underlying anatomy, the observed relationship between function and structure is weak, and the rules by which anatomy constrains brain dynamics remain elusive. In this article, we introduce a methodology to map the functional connectivity of a subject at rest from his or her structural graph. Using our methodology, we are able to systematically account for the role of structural walks in the formation of functional correlations. Furthermore, in our empirical evaluations, we observe that the eigenmodes of the mapped functional connectivity are associated with activity patterns associated with different cognitive systems

    Intuitive anatomy: distortions of conceptual knowledge of hand structure

    Knowledge of the spatial layout of bodies is mediated by a representation called the body structural description, damage to which results in the condition of autotopagnosia in which patients are impaired in judgments about the location and configuration of body parts. While a large literature has investigated disruption of the body structural description, little research has examined its accuracy in healthy individuals. I show that people have systematically distorted knowledge of the configuration of hands. Participants judged the location of their knuckles (i.e., the metacarpalphalangeal joint) by pointing with a baton on their palm. Participants showed clear distal biases, judging their knuckles as farther forward in the hand than they actually are for all fingers except the thumb. This effect appeared both when participants localized the knuckles of their own hand and another person’s hand. These results suggest that intuitive beliefs about body form are systematically distorted

    Four-Digit Hand: Anatomy of Ray II Amputation

    The South Dakota State University anatomy program received a male cadaver, age eighty-four, in January 2014. Upon arrival, the cadaver was observed for any signs of surgery, skin ulcerations, or abnormality. The inspection revealed that his right hand only had four digits. In order to observe such a unique extremity, a dissection was conducted to understand the anatomy of the four-digit hand. This dissection would search for standard anatomical landmarks as well as abnormalities that could have been in relation to the absent finger. In this case study, both amputation and a possible birth defect were taken into account and researched. There were no signs of a birth defect, such as malformed fingers on either of the hands. The dissection showed many hallmark signs of amputation

    Feasibility study of a hand guided robotic drill for cochleostomy

    The concept of a hand guided robotic drill has been inspired by an automated, arm supported robotic drill recently applied in clinical practice to produce cochleostomies without penetrating the endosteum ready for inserting cochlear electrodes. The smart tactile sensing scheme within the drill enables precise control of the state of interaction between tissues and tools in real-time. This paper reports development studies of the hand guided robotic drill where the same consistent outcomes, augmentation of surgeon control and skill, and similar reduction of induced disturbances on the hearing organ are achieved. The device operates with differing presentation of tissues resulting from variation in anatomy and demonstrates the ability to control or avoid penetration of tissue layers as required and to respond to intended rather than involuntary motion of the surgeon operator. The advantage of hand guided over an arm supported system is that it offers flexibility in adjusting the drilling trajectory. This can be important to initiate cutting on a hard convex tissue surface without slipping and then to proceed on the desired trajectory after cutting has commenced. The results for trials on phantoms show that drill unit compliance is an important factor in the design
