    Parallel ant algorithms for the minimum tardy task problem

    Ant Colony Optimization algorithms are intrinsically distributed algorithms where independent agents are in charge of building solutions. Stigmergy or indirect communication is the way in which each agent learns from the experience of the whole colony. However, explicit communication and parallel models of ACO can be implemented directly on different parallel platforms. We do so, and apply the resulting algorithms to the Minimum Tardy Task Problem (MTTP), a scheduling problem that has been faced with other metaheuristics, e.g., evolutionary algorithms and canonical ant algorithms. The aim of this article is twofold.     Ant Colony Heuristic for Mapping and Scheduling Tasks and Communications on Heterogeneous Embedded Systems

    To exploit the power of modern heterogeneous multiprocessor embedded platforms on partitioned applications, the designer usually needs to efficiently map and schedule all the tasks and the communications of the application, respecting the constraints imposed by the target architecture. Since the problem is heavily constrained, common methods used to explore such design space usually fail, obtaining low-quality solutions. In this paper, we propose an ant colony optimization (ACO) heuristic that, given a model of the target architecture and the application, efficiently executes both scheduling and mapping to optimize the application performance. We compare our approach with several other heuristics, including simulated annealing, tabu search, and genetic algorithms, on the performance to reach the optimum value and on the potential to explore the design space. We show that our approach obtains better results than other heuristics by at least 16% on average, despite an overhead in execution time. Finally, we validate the approach by scheduling and mapping a JPEG encoder on a realistic target architecture

    A Survey on Load Balancing Algorithms for VM Placement in Cloud Computing

    The emergence of cloud computing based on virtualization technologies brings huge opportunities to host virtual resource at low cost without the need of owning any infrastructure. Virtualization technologies enable users to acquire, configure and be charged on pay-per-use basis. However, Cloud data centers mostly comprise heterogeneous commodity servers hosting multiple virtual machines (VMs) with potential various specifications and fluctuating resource usages, which may cause imbalanced resource utilization within servers that may lead to performance degradation and service level agreements (SLAs) violations. To achieve efficient scheduling, these challenges should be addressed and solved by using load balancing strategies, which have been proved to be NP-hard problem. From multiple perspectives, this work identifies the challenges and analyzes existing algorithms for allocating VMs to PMs in infrastructure Clouds, especially focuses on load balancing. A detailed classification targeting load balancing algorithms for VM placement in cloud data centers is investigated and the surveyed algorithms are classified according to the classification.     Comparative study of pheromone control heuristics in ACO algorithms for solving RCPSP problems

    Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP) belong to a kind of traditional NP-hard problems with a high impact on both research and industrial domains. The goal of these problems is to find a feasible assignment for a group of variables where a set of imposed restrictions is satisfied. This family of NP-hard problems demands a huge amount of computational resources even for their simplest cases. For this reason, different heuristic methods have been studied so far in order to discover feasible solutions at an affordable complexity level. This paper elaborates on the application of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithms with a novel CSP-graph based model to solve Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problems (RCPSP). The main drawback of this ACO-based model is related to the high number of pheromones created in the system. To overcome this issue we propose two adaptive Oblivion Rate heuristics to control the number of pheromones: the first one, called Dynamic Oblivion Rate, takes into account the overall number of pheromones produced in the system, whereas the second one inspires from the recently contributed Coral Reef Optimization (CRO) solver. A thorough experimental analysis has been carried out using the public PSPLIB library, and the obtained results have been compared to those of the most relevant contributions from the related literature. The performed experiments reveal that the Oblivion Rate heuristic removes at least 79% of the pheromones in the system, whereas the ACO algorithm renders statistically better results than other algorithmic counterparts from the literature

    The AddACO: A bio-inspired modified version of the ant colony optimization algorithm to solve travel salesman problems

    The Travel Salesman Problem (TSP) consists in finding the minimal-length closed tour that connects the entire group of nodes of a given graph. We propose to solve such a combinatorial optimization problem with the AddACO algorithm: it is a version of the Ant Colony Optimization method that is characterized by a modified probabilistic law at the basis of the exploratory movement of the artificial insects. In particular, the ant decisional rule is here set to amount in a linear convex combination of competing behavioral stimuli and has therefore an additive form (hence the name of our algorithm), rather than the canonical multiplicative one. The AddACO intends to address two conceptual shortcomings that characterize classical ACO methods: (i) the population of artificial insects is in principle allowed to simultaneously minimize/maximize all migratory guidance cues (which is in implausible from a biological/ecological point of view) and (ii) a given edge of the graph has a null probability to be explored if at least one of the movement trait is therein equal to zero, i.e., regardless the intensity of the others (this in principle reduces the exploratory potential of the ant colony). Three possible variants of our method are then specified: the AddACO-V1, which includes pheromone trail and visibility as insect decisional variables, and the AddACO-V2 and the AddACO-V3, which in turn add random effects and inertia, respectively, to the two classical migratory stimuli. The three versions of our algorithm are tested on benchmark middle-scale TPS instances, in order to assess their performance and to find their optimal parameter setting. The best performing variant is finally applied to large-scale TSPs, compared to the naive Ant-Cycle Ant System, proposed by Dorigo and colleagues, and evaluated in terms of quality of the solutions, computational time, and convergence speed. The aim is in fact to show that the proposed transition probability, as long as its conceptual advantages, is competitive from a performance perspective, i.e., if it does not reduce the exploratory capacity of the ant population w.r.t. the canonical one (at least in the case of selected TSPs). A theoretical study of the asymptotic behavior of the AddACO is given in the appendix of the work, whose conclusive section contains some hints for further improvements of our algorithm, also in the perspective of its application to other optimization problems
