Poetics of the [Selves]∞: An Active Aesthetic

    Get PDF
This practitioner-based research reports on the development and assessment of a transdisciplinary pedagogical model for the learning sciences. The theoretical underpinnings of Poetics of the [Selves]∞ draw from three domains of knowledge: (1) mindfulness, (2) positive psychology, and (3) contemporary performance. The approach is designed to create positive self-transformation in participants as a result of engaging them in a sequence of activities that require different modes of reflection. The model was tested in two settings: a collaborative learning space, and a university classroom. The sample from the first workshop included individuals from the general public, and middle and high-school foreign language teachers comprised the second workshop. The data sources that underwent analysis included audio-visual documentation from each workshop. This qualitative study employed the principles and methods of Interactional Ethnography and critical discourse analysis to construct two telling cases of Poetics of the [Selves]∞. Analytic results from both workshops suggest that Poetics of the [Selves]∞ has the potential to enhance self-awareness and increase positive affect toward others. Moreover, the results of the second workshop showed its potential value in foreign language classrooms as it promoted authentic content connections, built rapport, and reinforced knowledge by activating different modes of learning in participants

Can culture beat Covid-19? Evidence that exposure to facemasks with cultural symbols increases solidarity

    Get PDF
Facemasks have become integral to everyday life. We propose that exposure to facemasks with a solidarity-related cultural symbol can activate cultural values such as mutual trust and increase corresponding interpersonal perceptions, thereby enhancing collective resilience in the Covid-19 pandemic. In three (two of which preregistered) studies, we examined whether exposure to facemasks with a solidarity-related cultural symbol predicts positive interpersonal perceptions, and whether this depends on death awareness. Across studies, exposure to facemasks with a cultural symbol (either pride flag or National Health Service) increased positive interpersonal perceptions, an index of solidarity, in people for whom this symbol represents a meaningful social identity. This was found whether participants were reminded of death, a neutral experience, or a negative experience. Importantly, in Study 3, exposure to facemasks with a solidarity-related cultural symbol (vs. surgical) led to greater increases in positive interpersonal perceptions when death awareness was high. Together, our findings suggest that wearing facemasks with a cultural symbol that relates to solidarity can be a vehicle for shaping people's personality impressions of others. Applied directions for the activation of people's social identities via facemask selection to promote collective resilience in the Covid-19 pandemic are discussed

PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACHES TO EVALUATING CRITICAL THINKING AS DIMINISHED EMPATHY: A QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF NEWS FRAMING OF STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS

    Get PDF
Critical thinking has long been recognized across disciplines as being solely rooted in problem-solving and logical argument construction. By using Miranda Fricker’s Epistemic Injustice: The Power and Ethics of Knowing as a core theoretical framework, this study aims to deconstruct the ways in how news framing has shaped critical thinking over vast periods of time through an exploration into the ways in which thinking has been socially understood in an otherwise largely technologically immersed world. Using a rhetorical criticism approach, 33 news articles and segments are analyzed from a variety of popular news sources from several platforms that are commonly used mediums for information. Findings indicate that framing bias echoes hermeneutic injustice propagandizing systematic devaluation of individuated experience through use of numeric abstraction. Future research directions include an exploration into methods of cultural shift to reconsider empathy and creativity as an integral part of critical thinking as an extension of mathematics and logic

Sensing the Virtual: Atmosphere and Somaesthetics in Virtual Reality

    Get PDF
This article examines somaesthetics in virtual reality via the spatial lens of atmosphere, adapting theories of atmosphere to virtual environments and advocating for VR as a distinctive terrain for somaesthetics. Building on Gernot Böhme’s analyses of atmosphere, this exploration unpacks ways that artists have engaged the body and space in VR, from creative interface design to multisensory storytelling, and projects that blend physical and virtual environments. Having mapped the confluence of somaesthetics, atmosphere, and immersive virtual space, the paper concludes considering the practical need for cultivating atmospheric competence in VR

Black Lives Matter and the Effects of a Social Media User\u27s Connection to Differing Ethnic and Racial Backgrounds

Millions of citizens, including a large number of whites, joined the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in the summer of 2020. An important factor that mobilized them toward BLM was the rise of social media. Recognizing the critical importance of social media, the present research explores the link between social media use and citizens’ behavior on the BLM movement in the United States. The focus of the analysis is on the issue of diversity. Because diversity on social networks can expose individuals to more diverse views, one can hypothesize that a higher number of one’s friends and followers being from different racial and ethnic backgrounds can lead to higher levels of activism in the BLM movement. In order to test the hypotheses, we conducted a survey in the United States specifically tailored for this study. A statistical analysis on the survey data reveals that diversity in one\u27s social networks on social media significantly enhances his or her likelihood of participation in the BLM protest. Yet, the significant effect disappears when the samples are limited to white respondents; it is clearly non-white respondents who are driving the significant result of diversity of social networks. This study makes an important contribution to the literature of social movements by dissecting the mechanism through which social media shapes citizens’ relations with BLM. Findings from this study generate critical implications that are essential in understanding dynamics of social movements in modern society

Relationship Quality in the Context of Computer-Mediated Communication - A social constructionist approach

    Get PDF
This paper contributes to possible answers to the question: What are the effects of computermediated communication on relationship qualities in organizations? To answer this question without oversimplifying the phenomena an adequate research methodology has to be found. First, the interrelationship between computer-mediated communication (CMC) and relationship quality is reviewed. CMC-theory will be described from three main perspectives and the risks and chances for relationship quality will be shown. The review indicates that most studies in the field are founded on a positivistic basis. Relationships are treated as static dyads neglecting contextual factors. Thus, the insight into relational processes in computerized environments remains limited. As an alternative a research methodology based on the epistemological stance of social constructionism is proposed. It will be explained, how the researchers’ view can be broadened by applying the method of the ‘narrative interview’ in practice based studies in computer-mediated contexts. In the concluding part, the contribution of this approach to research and practice will be discussed.Computer-mediated communication, relationship quality, social constructionism
