    Machine learning applications for seismic processing and interpretation

    During the past few years, exploration seismology has increasingly made use of machine learning algorithms in several areas including seismic data processing, attribute analysis, and computer aided interpretation. Since machine learning is a data-driven method for problem solving, it is important to adopt data which have good quality with minimal bias. Hidden variables and an appropriate objective function also need to be considered. In this dissertation, I focus my research on adapting machine learning algorithms that have been successfully applied to other scientific analysis problems to seismic interpretation and seismic data processing. Seismic data volumes can be extremely large, containing Gigabytes to Terrabytes of information. Add to these volumes the rich choice of seismic attributes, each of which has its own strengths in expressing geologic patterns, and the problem grows larger still. Seismic interpretation involves picking faults and horizons and identifying geologic features by their geometry, morphology, and amplitude patterns seen on seismic data. For the seismic facies classification task, I tested multiple attributes as input and built an attribute subset that can best differentiate the salt, mass transport deposits (MTDs), and conformal reflector seismic patterns using a suite of attribute selection algorithms. The resulting attribute subset differentiates the three classes with high accuracy and has the benefit of reducing the dimensionality of the data. To maximize the use of unlabeled data as well as labeled data, I provide a workflow for facies classification based on a semi-supervised learning approach. Compared to using only labeled data, I find that the addition of unlabeled data for learning results in higher performance of classification.. In seismic processing, I propose a deep learning approach for random and coherent noise attenuation in the frequency – space domain. I find that the deep ResNet architecture speeds up the process of denoising and improves the accuracy, which efficiently separates the noise from signals. Finally, I review geophysical inversion and machine learning approaches in an aspect of solving inverse problems and show similarities and differences of these approaches in both mathematical formulation and numerical tests

    From information systems requirements to service-oriented logical architectures

    Tese de doutoramento do Programa de Doutoramento em InformáticaIn a world where there are no certain and doubt prevails, it is not possible to take a based decision about the construction of an artifact able to deliver a set of functionalities of which only the intended output is known. Based on the previous premise, this work details a method and a process for, starting from a very high-level of abstraction of an information system requirements, create a representation of the software solution that is able to implement the desired functionalities and ending with an assessment of the entire process. The presented V-Model approach for creating the information system’s representation and the following transition to the V+V-Model approach for the creation of the software solution representation is able to deliver a set of modeling artifacts that are presented to development teams in order to build those represented artifacts. The V+V-Model approach and the adopted models alongside the entire approach are validated using the architecture validation method ARID and applied in a real industrial case study, the ISOFIN Project, framed within business model conditioned by cloud-related and service-oriented target scenarios.Num mundo onde não há certezas e as dúvidas imperam, não é possível efetuar decisões baseadas na construção de artefactos capazes de disponibilizar funcionalidades, das quais só se conhece o resultado esperado. Baseado na premissa anterior, este trabalho detalha um método e um processo para, a partir de um nível de abstração muito elevado dos requisitos de um sistema de informação, criar a representação de uma solução de software capaz de implementar as funcionalidades desejadas e, em simultâneo, avaliar se o processo de construção foi corretamente executado. O processo apresentado, a aproximação baseada em V-Model, para criar contexto para a representação do sistema de informação e a transição do V-Model para o V+V-Model, para a criação da representação da solução de software, são capazes de disponibilizar um conjunto de artefactos que que podem ser entregues às equipas de desenvolvimento de forma a executar a construção desses mesmos artefactos. O processo baseado no V+V-Model, assim como os modelos usados são validados usando uma adaptação de um método de avaliação de arquiteturas, o ARID. São também aplicados a um caso de estudo derivado de um caso industrial real, chamado Projeto ISOFIN.     ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks: a literature review

    Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation is a complex and vibrant process, one that involves a combination of technological and organizational interactions. Often an ERP implementation project is the single largest IT project that an organization has ever launched and requires a mutual fit of system and organization. Also the concept of an ERP implementation supporting business processes across many different departments is not a generic, rigid and uniform concept and depends on variety of factors. As a result, the issues addressing the ERP implementation process have been one of the major concerns in industry. Therefore ERP implementation receives attention from practitioners and scholars and both, business as well as academic literature is abundant and not always very conclusive or coherent. However, research on ERP systems so far has been mainly focused on diffusion, use and impact issues. Less attention has been given to the methods used during the configuration and the implementation of ERP systems, even though they are commonly used in practice, they still remain largely unexplored and undocumented in Information Systems research. So, the academic relevance of this research is the contribution to the existing body of scientific knowledge. An annotated brief literature review is done in order to evaluate the current state of the existing academic literature. The purpose is to present a systematic overview of relevant ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks as a desire for achieving a better taxonomy of ERP implementation methodologies. This paper is useful to researchers who are interested in ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Results will serve as an input for a classification of the existing ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Also, this paper aims also at the professional ERP community involved in the process of ERP implementation by promoting a better understanding of ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks, its variety and history

    Effizientes binaurales Rendering von virtuellen akustischen Realitäten : technische und wahrnehmungsbezogene Konzepte

    Binaural rendering aims to immerse the listener in a virtual acoustic scene, making it an essential method for spatial audio reproduction in virtual or augmented reality (VR/AR) applications. The growing interest and research in VR/AR solutions yielded many different methods for the binaural rendering of virtual acoustic realities, yet all of them share the fundamental idea that the auditory experience of any sound field can be reproduced by reconstructing its sound pressure at the listener's eardrums. This thesis addresses various state-of-the-art methods for 3 or 6 degrees of freedom (DoF) binaural rendering, technical approaches applied in the context of headphone-based virtual acoustic realities, and recent technical and psychoacoustic research questions in the field of binaural technology. The publications collected in this dissertation focus on technical or perceptual concepts and methods for efficient binaural rendering, which has become increasingly important in research and development due to the rising popularity of mobile consumer VR/AR devices and applications. The thesis is organized into five research topics: Head-Related Transfer Function Processing and Interpolation, Parametric Spatial Audio, Auditory Distance Perception of Nearby Sound Sources, Binaural Rendering of Spherical Microphone Array Data, and Voice Directivity. The results of the studies included in this dissertation extend the current state of research in the respective research topic, answer specific psychoacoustic research questions and thereby yield a better understanding of basic spatial hearing processes, and provide concepts, methods, and design parameters for the future implementation of technically and perceptually efficient binaural rendering.Binaurales Rendering zielt darauf ab, dass der Hörer in eine virtuelle akustische Szene eintaucht, und ist somit eine wesentliche Methode für die räumliche Audiowiedergabe in Anwendungen der virtuellen Realität (VR) oder der erweiterten Realität (AR – aus dem Englischen Augmented Reality). Das wachsende Interesse und die zunehmende Forschung an VR/AR-Lösungen führte zu vielen verschiedenen Methoden für das binaurale Rendering virtueller akustischer Realitäten, die jedoch alle die grundlegende Idee teilen, dass das Hörerlebnis eines beliebigen Schallfeldes durch die Rekonstruktion seines Schalldrucks am Trommelfell des Hörers reproduziert werden kann. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit verschiedenen modernsten Methoden zur binauralen Wiedergabe mit 3 oder 6 Freiheitsgraden (DoF – aus dem Englischen Degree of Freedom), mit technischen Ansätzen, die im Kontext kopfhörerbasierter virtueller akustischer Realitäten angewandt werden, und mit aktuellen technischen und psychoakustischen Forschungsfragen auf dem Gebiet der Binauraltechnik. Die in dieser Dissertation gesammelten Publikationen befassen sich mit technischen oder wahrnehmungsbezogenen Konzepten und Methoden für effizientes binaurales Rendering, was in der Forschung und Entwicklung aufgrund der zunehmenden Beliebtheit von mobilen Verbraucher-VR/AR-Geräten und -Anwendungen zunehmend an Relevanz gewonnen hat. Die Arbeit ist in fünf Forschungsthemen gegliedert: Verarbeitung und Interpolation von Außenohrübertragungsfunktionen, parametrisches räumliches Audio, auditive Entfernungswahrnehmung ohrnaher Schallquellen, binaurales Rendering von sphärischen Mikrofonarraydaten und Richtcharakteristik der Stimme.     Business process modelling in ERP implementation literature review

    Business processes are the backbone of any Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation. Business process modelling (BPM) has become essential for modern, process driven enterprises due to the vibrant business environments. As a consequence enterprises are dealing with a substantial rate of organizational and business processes change. Business process modelling enables a common understanding and analysis of the business processes, which is the first step in every ERP implementation methodology (blueprint phase). In order to represent enterprise processes models in an accurate manner, it is paramount to choose a right business process modeling technique and tool. The problem of many ERP projects rated as unsuccessful is directly connected to a lack of use of business process models and notations during the blueprint phase. Also, blueprint implementation phase is crucial in order to fit planned processes in an organization with processes implemented in the solution. However, business analysts and ERP implementation professionals have substantial difficulties to navigate through a large number of theoretical models and representational notations that have been proposed for business process modeling (BPM). As the availability of different business process modeling references is huge, it is time consuming to make review and classification of all modeling techniques. Therefor, in reality majority of ERP implementations blueprint documents have no business process modeling included in generating blueprint documents. Choosing the right model comprise the purpose of the analysis and acquaintance of the available process modelling techniques and tools. The number of references on business modelling is quit large, so it is very hard to make a decision which modeling notation or technique to use. The main purpose of this paper is to make a review of business process modelling literature and describe the key process modelling techniques. The focus will be on all business process modeling that could be used in ERP implementations, specifically during the blueprint phase of the implementation process. Capability sourcing is an organizing process to gain access to best-in-class capabilities for all activities in a firm's value chain to ensure long-term competitive advantage. Capability sourcing modeling is a technique that helps investigating sourcing alternative solutions to facilitate strategic sourcing decision making. Our position is applying conceptual models as intermediate artifacts which are schematic descriptions of sourcing alternatives based on organization's capabilities.     The creation of business architecture heat maps to support strategy-aligned organizational decisions

    The realization of strategic alignment within the business architecture has become increasingly important for companies. Indeed, it facilitates business-IT alignment as a well-designed business architecture helps both to identify the appropriate requirements for IT systems and to discover new business opportunities that can be realized by IT. However, there is a lack of alignment techniques that support organizational (re) design decisions during the operation phase as the actual performance of business architecture elements is neglected. Capability heat maps provide a useful starting point in this respect as they focus on the creation of a hierarchy of prioritized capabilities, which are characterized by a performance measure. In this paper, these techniques will be extended to support strategy-aligned decisions within the business architecture. The identification of the relevant business architecture elements is based on state-of-the-art enterprise modelling languages, which enable the development of enterprise models on distinct layers of the business architecture. Strategic alignment between these elements will be realized by using prioritization according to the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), while performance measurement will enable the creation of a proper decision support system. Afterwards, the proposed heat map will be applied on a case example to illustrate its potential use. This results in the completion of a first build-and-evaluate loop within the Design Science methodology
