    Analytical Approximations to Predict Performance Measures of Manufacturing Systems with Job Failures and Parallel Processing

    Parallel processing is prevalent in many manufacturing and service systems. Many manufactured products are built and assembled from several components fabricated in parallel lines. An example of this manufacturing system configuration is observed at a manufacturing facility equipped to assemble and test web servers. Characteristics of a typical web server assembly line are: multiple products, job circulation, and paralleling processing. The primary objective of this research was to develop analytical approximations to predict performance measures of manufacturing systems with job failures and parallel processing. The analytical formulations extend previous queueing models used in assembly manufacturing systems in that they can handle serial and different configurations of paralleling processing with multiple product classes, and job circulation due to random part failures. In addition, appropriate correction terms via regression analysis were added to the approximations in order to minimize the gap in the error between the analytical approximation and the simulation models. Markovian and general type manufacturing systems, with multiple product classes, job circulation due to failures, and fork and join systems to model parallel processing were studied. In the Markovian and general case, the approximations without correction terms performed quite well for one and two product problem instances. However, it was observed that the flow time error increased as the number of products and net traffic intensity increased. Therefore, correction terms for single and fork-join stations were developed via regression analysis to deal with more than two products. The numerical comparisons showed that the approximations perform remarkably well when the corrections factors were used in the approximations. In general, the average flow time error was reduced from 38.19% to 5.59% in the Markovian case, and from 26.39% to 7.23% in the general case. All the equations stated in the analytical formulations were implemented as a set of Matlab scripts. By using this set, operations managers of web server assembly lines, manufacturing or other service systems with similar characteristics can estimate different system performance measures, and make judicious decisions - especially setting delivery due dates, capacity planning, and bottleneck mitigation, among others

    An Analytical Approach to Cycle Time Evaluation in an Unreliable Multi-Product Production Line with Finite Buffers

    This thesis develops an analytical approximation method to measure the performance of a multi-product unreliable production line with finite buffers between workstations. The performance measure used in this thesis is Total Cycle Time. The proposed approximation method generalizes the processing times to relax the variation of product types in a multi-product system. A decomposition method is then employed to approximate the production rate of a multi-product production line. The decomposition method considers generally distributed processing times as well as random failure and repair. A GI/G/1/N queuing model is also applied to obtain parameters such as blocking and starving probabilities that are needed for the approximation procedure. Several numerical experiments under different scenarios are performed, and results are validated by simulation models in order to assess the accuracy and strength of the approximation method. Consequent analysis and discussion of the results is also presented

    DECISION SUPPORT MODEL IN FAILURE-BASED COMPUTERIZED MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM INDUSTRIES

    Maintenance decision support system is crucial to ensure maintainability and reliability of equipments in production lines. This thesis investigates a few decision support models to aid maintenance management activities in small and medium industries. In order to improve the reliability of resources in production lines, this study introduces a conceptual framework to be used in failure-based maintenance. Maintenance strategies are identified using the Decision-Making Grid model, based on two important factors, including the machines’ downtimes and their frequency of failures. The machines are categorized into three downtime criterions and frequency of failures, which are high, medium and low. This research derived a formula based on maintenance cost, to re-position the machines prior to Decision-Making Grid analysis. Subsequently, the formula on clustering analysis in the Decision-Making Grid model is improved to solve multiple-criteria problem. This research work also introduced a formula to estimate contractor’s response and repair time. The estimates are used as input parameters in the Analytical Hierarchy Process model. The decisions were synthesized using models based on the contractors’ technical skills such as experience in maintenance, skill to diagnose machines and ability to take prompt action during troubleshooting activities. Another important criteria considered in the Analytical Hierarchy Process is the business principles of the contractors, which includes the maintenance quality, tools, equipments and enthusiasm in problem-solving. The raw data collected through observation, interviews and surveys in the case studies to understand some risk factors in small and medium food processing industries. The risk factors are analysed with the Ishikawa Fishbone diagram to reveal delay time in machinery maintenance. The experimental studies are conducted using maintenance records in food processing industries. The Decision Making Grid model can detect the top ten worst production machines on the production lines. The Analytical Hierarchy Process model is used to rank the contractors and their best maintenance practice. This research recommends displaying the results on the production’s indicator boards and implements the strategies on the production shop floor. The proposed models can be used by decision makers to identify maintenance strategies and enhance competitiveness among contractors in failure-based maintenance. The models can be programmed as decision support sub-procedures in computerized maintenance management systems

ECQT is a biannual event where scientists and technicians in queueing theory and related areas get together to promote research, encourage interaction and exchange ideas. The spirit of the conference is to be a queueing event organized from within Europe, but open to participants from all over the world. The technical program of the 2016 edition consisted of 112 presentations organized in 29 sessions covering all trends in queueing theory, including the development of the theory, methodology advances, computational aspects and applications. Another exciting feature of ECQT2016 was the institution of the TakĂĄcs Award for outstanding PhD thesis on "Queueing Theory and its Applications"

    A Simple, Practical Prioritization Scheme for a Job Shop Processing Multiple Job Types

    The maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) process is used to recondition equipment in the railroad, off-shore drilling, aircraft, and shipping industries. In the typical MRO process, the equipment is disassembled into component parts and these parts are routed to back-shops for repair. Repaired parts are returned for reassembling the equipment. Scheduling the back-shop for smooth flow often requires prioritizing the repair of component parts from different original assemblies at different machines. To enable such prioritization, we model the back-shop as a multi-class queueing network with a ConWIP execution system and introduce a new priority scheme to maximize the system performance. In this scheme, we identify the bottleneck machine based on overall workload and classify machines into two categories: the bottleneck machine and the non-bottleneck machine(s). Assemblies with the lowest cycle time receive the highest priority on the bottleneck machine and the lowest priority on non-bottleneck machine(s). Our experimental results show that this priority scheme increases the system performance by lowering the average cycle times without adversely impacting the total throughput. The contribution of this thesis consists primarily of three parts. First, we develop a simple priority scheme for multi-class, multi-server, ConWIP queueing systems with the disassembly/reassembly feature so that schedulers for a job-shop environment would be able to know which part should be given priority, in what order and where. Next, we provide an exact analytical solution to a two-class, two-server closed queueing model with mixed non-preemptive priority scheme. The queueing network model we study has not been analyzed in the literature, and there are no existing models that address the underlying problem of deciding prioritization by job types to maximize the system performance. Finally, we explore conditions under which the non-preemptive priority discipline can be approximated by a preemptive priority discipline

    Identification of Moving Bottlenecks in Production Systems

    Manufacturing sector have been plagued by bottlenecks from time immemorial, leading to loss of productivity and profitability, various research effort has been expended towards identifying and mitigating the effects of bottlenecks on production lines. However, traditional approaches often fail in identifying moving bottlenecks. The current data boom and giant strides made in the machine learning field proffers an alternative means of using the large volume of data generated by machines in identifying bottlenecks. In this study, a hierarchical agglomerative clustering algorithm is used in identifying potential groups of bottlenecks within a serial production line. A serial production line with five workstations and zero buffer was simulated in ARENAÂź with data regarding blocked, producing and starvation time extracted. The extracted data was preprocessed using Python 3.7 to obtain a matrix of ones and zeros. The resultant matrix was fed into a complete linkage hierarchical agglomerative clustering algorithm to obtain clusters containing potential bottleneck workstations. Results obtained was validated using results obtained from simulation and an Elbow plot

    Analysis of buffer allocations in time-dependent and stochastic flow lines

    This thesis reviews and classifies the literature on the Buffer Allocation Problem under steady-state conditions and on performance evaluation approaches for queueing systems with time-dependent parameters. Subsequently, new performance evaluation approaches are developed. Finally, a local search algorithm for the derivation of time-dependent buffer allocations is proposed. The algorithm is based on numerically observed monotonicity properties of the system performance in the time-dependent buffer allocations. Numerical examples illustrate that time-dependent buffer allocations represent an adequate way of minimizing the average WIP in the flow line while achieving a desired service level
