Proportional fairness in wireless powered CSMA/CA based IoT networks
This paper considers the deployment of a hybrid wireless data/power access
point in an 802.11-based wireless powered IoT network. The proportionally fair
allocation of throughputs across IoT nodes is considered under the constraints
of energy neutrality and CPU capability for each device. The joint optimization
of wireless powering and data communication resources takes the CSMA/CA random
channel access features, e.g. the backoff procedure, collisions, protocol
overhead into account. Numerical results show that the optimized solution can
effectively balance individual throughput across nodes, and meanwhile
proportionally maximize the overall sum throughput under energy constraints.Comment: Accepted by Globecom 201
Throughput and range characterization of IEEE 802.11ah
The most essential part of Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure is the
wireless communication system that acts as a bridge for the delivery of data
and control messages. However, the existing wireless technologies lack the
ability to support a huge amount of data exchange from many battery driven
devices spread over a wide area. In order to support the IoT paradigm, the IEEE
802.11 standard committee is in process of introducing a new standard, called
IEEE 802.11ah. This is one of the most promising and appealing standards, which
aims to bridge the gap between traditional mobile networks and the demands of
the IoT. In this paper, we first discuss the main PHY and MAC layer amendments
proposed for IEEE 802.11ah. Furthermore, we investigate the operability of IEEE
802.11ah as a backhaul link to connect devices over a long range. Additionally,
we compare the aforementioned standard with previous notable IEEE 802.11
amendments (i.e. IEEE 802.11n and IEEE 802.11ac) in terms of throughput (with
and without frame aggregation) by utilizing the most robust modulation schemes.
The results show an improved performance of IEEE 802.11ah (in terms of power
received at long range while experiencing different packet error rates) as

Throughput Analysis of Primary and Secondary Networks in a Shared IEEE 802.11 System
In this paper, we analyze the coexistence of a primary and a secondary
(cognitive) network when both networks use the IEEE 802.11 based distributed
coordination function for medium access control. Specifically, we consider the
problem of channel capture by a secondary network that uses spectrum sensing to
determine the availability of the channel, and its impact on the primary
throughput. We integrate the notion of transmission slots in Bianchi's Markov
model with the physical time slots, to derive the transmission probability of
the secondary network as a function of its scan duration. This is used to
obtain analytical expressions for the throughput achievable by the primary and
secondary networks. Our analysis considers both saturated and unsaturated
networks. By performing a numerical search, the secondary network parameters
are selected to maximize its throughput for a given level of protection of the
primary network throughput. The theoretical expressions are validated using
extensive simulations carried out in the Network Simulator 2. Our results
provide critical insights into the performance and robustness of different
schemes for medium access by the secondary network. In particular, we find that
the channel captures by the secondary network does not significantly impact the
primary throughput, and that simply increasing the secondary contention window
size is only marginally inferior to silent-period based methods in terms of its

Optimal Content Downloading in Vehicular Networks
We consider a system where users aboard communication-enabled vehicles are interested in downloading different contents from Internet-based servers. This scenario captures many of the infotainment services that vehicular communication is envisioned to enable, including news reporting, navigation maps and software updating, or multimedia file downloading. In this paper, we outline the performance limits of such a vehicular content downloading system by modelling the downloading process as an optimization problem, and maximizing the overall system throughput. Our approach allows us to investigate the impact of different factors, such as the roadside infrastructure deployment, the vehicle-to-vehicle relaying, and the penetration rate of the communication technology, even in presence of large instances of the problem. Results highlight the existence of two operational regimes at different penetration rates and the importance of an efficient, yet 2-hop constrained, vehicle-to-vehicle relaying
A Sensing Error Aware MAC Protocol for Cognitive Radio Networks
Cognitive radios (CR) are intelligent radio devices that can sense the radio
environment and adapt to changes in the radio environment. Spectrum sensing and
spectrum access are the two key CR functions. In this paper, we present a
spectrum sensing error aware MAC protocol for a CR network collocated with
multiple primary networks. We explicitly consider both types of sensing errors
in the CR MAC design, since such errors are inevitable for practical spectrum
sensors and more important, such errors could have significant impact on the
performance of the CR MAC protocol. Two spectrum sensing polices are presented,
with which secondary users collaboratively sense the licensed channels. The
sensing policies are then incorporated into p-Persistent CSMA to coordinate
opportunistic spectrum access for CR network users. We present an analysis of
the interference and throughput performance of the proposed CR MAC, and find
the analysis highly accurate in our simulation studies. The proposed sensing
error aware CR MAC protocol outperforms two existing approaches with
considerable margins in our simulations, which justify the importance of
considering spectrum sensing errors in CR MAC design.Comment: 21 page, technical repor
