    Single-input Multiple-output Tunable Log-domain Current-mode Universal Filter

    This paper describes the design of a current-mode single-input multiple-output (SIMO) universal filter based on the log-domain filtering concept. The circuit is a direct realization of a first-order differential equation for obtaining the lossy integrator circuit. Lossless integrators are realized by log-domain lossy integrators. The proposed filter comprises only two grounded capacitors and twenty-four transistors. This filter suits to operate in very high frequency (VHF) applications. The pole-frequency of the proposed filter can be controlled over five decade frequency range through bias currents. The pole-Q can be independently controlled with the pole-frequency. Non-ideal effects on the filter are studied in detail. A validated BJT model is used in the simulations operated by a single power supply, as low as 2.5 V. The simulation results using PSpice are included to confirm the good performances and are in agreement with the theory

    Analog Reconfigurable Circuits

    The aim of this paper is to present an overview of a new branch of analog electronics represented by analog reconfigurable circuits. The reconfiguration of analog circuits has been known and used since the beginnings of electronics, but the universal reconfigurable circuits called Field Programmable Analog Arrays (FPAA) have been developed over the last two decades. This paper presents the classification of analog circuit reconfiguration, examples of FPAA solutions obtained as academic projects and commercially available ones, as well as some application examples of the dynamic reconfiguration of FPAA.

    Nonlinearity and noise modeling of operational transconductance amplifiers for continuous time analog filters

    A general framework for performance optimization of continuous-time OTA-C (Operational Transconductance Amplifier-Capacitor) filters is proposed. Efficient procedures for evaluating nonlinear distortion and noise valid for any filter of arbitrary order are developed based on the matrix description of a general OTA-C filter model . Since these procedures use OTA macromodels, they can be used to obtain the results significantly faster than transistor-level simulation. In the case of transient analysis, the speed-up may be as much as three orders of magnitude without almost no loss of accuracy. This makes it possible to carry out direct numerical optimization of OTA-C filters with respect to important characteristics such as noise performance, THD, IM3, DR or SNR. On the other hand, the general OTA-C filter model allows us to apply matrix transforms that manipulate (rescale) filter element values and/or change topology without changing its transfer function. The above features are a basis to build automated optimization procedures for OTA-C filters. In particular, a systematic optimization procedure using equivalence transformations is proposed. The research also proposes suitable software implementations of the optimization process. The first part of the research proposes a general performance optimization procedure and to verify the process two application type examples are mentioned. An application example of the proposed approach to optimal block sequencing and gain distribution of 8th order cascade Butterworth filter (for two variants of OTA topologies) is given. Secondly the modeling tool is used to select the best suitable topology for a 5th order Bessel Low Pass Filter. Theoretical results are verified by comparing to transistor-level simulation withCADENCE. For the purpose of verification, the filters have also been fabricated in standard 0.5mm CMOS process. The second part of the research proposes a new linearization technique to improve the linearity of an OTA using an Active Error Feedforward technique. Most present day applications require very high linear circuits combined with low noise and low power consumption. An OTA based biquad filter has also been fabricated in 0.35mm CMOS process. The measurement results for the filter and the stand alone OTA have been discussed. The research focuses on these issues

    Ultra Low Power IEEE 802.15.4/ZIGBEE Compliant Transceiver

    Low power wireless communications is the most demanding request among all wireless users. A battery life that can survive for years without being replaced, makes it realistic to implement many applications where the battery is unreachable (e.g. concrete walls) or expensive to change (e.g underground applications). IEEE 802.15.4/ZIGBEE standard is published to cover low power low cost applications, where the battery life can last for years, because of the 1% duty cycle of operation. A fully integrated 2.4GHz IEEE802.15.4 Compliant transceiver suitable for low power, low cost ZIGBEE applications is implemented. Direct conversion architecture is used in both Receiver and Transmitter, to achieve the minimum possible power and area. The chip is fabricated in a standard 0.18um CMOS technology. In the transmit mode, the transmitter chain (Modulator to PA) consumes 25mW, while in the receive mode, the iv receiver chain (LNA to Demodulator) consumes 5mW. The Integer-N Frequency Synthesizer consumes 8.5mW. Other Low power circuits are reported; A 13.56 Passive RFID tag and a low power ADC suitable for Built-In-Testing applications

    High performance continuous-time filters for information transfer systems

    Vast attention has been paid to active continuous-time filters over the years. Thus as the cheap, readily available integrated circuit OpAmps replaced their discrete circuit versions, it became feasible to consider active-RC filter circuits using large numbers of OpAmps. Similarly the development of integrated operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) led to new filter configurations. This gave rise to OTA-C filters, using only active devices and capacitors, making it more suitable for integration. The demands on filter circuits have become ever more stringent as the world of electronics and communications has advanced. In addition, the continuing increase in the operating frequencies of modern circuits and systems increases the need for active filters that can perform at these higher frequencies; an area where the LC active filter emerges. What mainly limits the performance of an analog circuit are the non-idealities of the used building blocks and the circuit architecture. This research concentrates on the design issues of high frequency continuous-time integrated filters. Several novel circuit building blocks are introduced. A novel pseudo-differential fully balanced fully symmetric CMOS OTA architecture with inherent common-mode detection is proposed. Through judicious arrangement, the common-mode feedback circuit can be economically implemented. On the level of system architectures, a novel filter low-voltage 4th order RF bandpass filter structure based on emulation of two magnetically coupled resonators is presented. A unique feature of the proposed architecture is using electric coupling to emulate the effect of the coupled-inductors, thus providing bandwidth tuning with small passband ripple. As part of a direct conversion dual-mode 802.11b/Bluetooth receiver, a BiCMOS 5th order low-pass channel selection filter is designed. The filter operated from a single 2.5V supply and achieves a 76dB of out-of-band SFDR. A digital automatic tuning system is also implemented to account for process and temperature variations. As part of a Bluetooth transmitter, a low-power quadrature direct digital frequency synthesizer (DDFS) is presented. Piecewise linear approximation is used to avoid using a ROM look-up table to store the sine values in a conventional DDFS. Significant saving in power consumption, due to the elimination of the ROM, renders the design more suitable for portable wireless communication applications

    Controller implementation using analog reconfigurable hardware (FPAA)

    This Thesis has the main target to make a research about FPAA/dpASPs devices and technologies applied to control systems. These devices provide easy way to emulate analog circuits that can be reconfigurable by programming tools from manufactures and in case of dpASPs are able to be dynamically reconfigurable on the fly. It is described different kinds of technologies commercially available and also academic projects from researcher groups. These technologies are very recent and are in ramp up development to achieve a level of flexibility and integration to penetrate more easily the market. As occurs with CPLD/FPGAs, the FPAA/dpASPs technologies have the target to increase the productivity, reducing the development time and make easier future hardware reconfigurations reducing the costs. FPAA/dpAsps still have some limitations comparing with the classic analog circuits due to lower working frequencies and emulation of complex circuits that require more components inside the integrated circuit. However, they have great advantages in sensor signal condition, filter circuits and control systems. This thesis focuses practical implementations of these technologies to control system PID controllers. The result of the experiments confirms the efficacy of FPAA/dpASPs on signal condition and control systems.Esta tese tem como principal objectivo fazer uma pesquisa sobre circuitos integrados e tecnologias das FPAA/dpASPs aplicadas a sistemas de controlo. Estes dispositivos possibilitam a emulação de circuitos analógicos que podem ser reconfiguráveis por ferramentas de programação dos próprios fabricantes e no caso dos dpASPs são capazes de ser dinamicamente reconfiguráveis em tempo real. São descritas diferentes tecnologias disponíveis no mercado e também projectos académicos de grupos de investigação. Estas tecnologias são muito recentes e estão em pleno desenvolvimento para alcançar um nível de flexibilidade e integração para penetrar mais facilmente no mercado. Como já ocorre com as CPLD/FPGAs, os FPAA/dpASPs tem o objectivo de aumentar a produtividade, reduzindo o tempo de desenvolvimento e facilitar reconfigurações futuras de hardware, reduzindo os custos. As FPAA/dpASPs ainda tem algumas limitações comparando com os circuitos analógicos clássicos devido a uma menor largura de banda de frequências de trabalho e à dificuldade de emulação de circuitos complexos que requerem mais componentes dentro do circuito integrado e portanto uma maior escala de integração. No entanto, estes circuitos integrados têm grandes vantagens e podem ser utilizados para aplicações de condicionamento do sinal de sensores, circuitos de filtros e sistemas de controlo. Esta tese concentra-se nas implementações práticas destas tecnologias aos sistemas de controlo usando controladores PID.     PROCESS AWARE ANALOG-CENTRIC SINGLE LEAD ECG ACQUISITION AND CLASSIFICATION CMOS FRONTEND

    The primary objective of this research work is the development of a low power single-lead ECG analog front-end (AFE) architecture which includes acquisition, digitization, process aware efficient gain and frequency control mechanism and a low complexity classifier for the detecting asystole, extreme bardycardia and tachycardia. Recent research on ECG recording systems focuses on the design of a compact single-lead wearable/portable devices with ultra-low-power consumption and in-built hardware for diagnosis and prognosis. Since, the amplitude of the ECG signal varies from hundreds of µV to a few mV, and has a bandwidth of DC to 250 Hz, conventional front-ends use an instrument amplifier followed by a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) to amplify the input ECG signal appropriately. This work presents an mixed signal ECG fronted with an ultra-low power two-stage capacitive-coupled signal conditioning circuit (or an AFE), providing programmable amplification along with tunable 2nd order high pass and lowpass filter characteristics. In the contemporary state-of-the-art ECG recording systems, the gain of the amplifier is controlled by external digital control pins which are in turn dynamically controlled through a DSP. Therefore, an efficient automatic gain control mechanism with minimal area overhead and consuming power in the order of nano watts only. The AGC turns the subsequent ADC on only after output of the PGA (or input of the ADC) reaches a level for which the ADC achieves maximum signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR), hence saving considerable startup power and avoiding the use of DSP. Further, in any practical filter design, the low pass cut-off frequency is prone to deviate from its nominal value across process and temperature variations. Therefore, post-fabrication calibration is essential, before the signal is fed to an ADC, to minimize this deviation, prevent signal degradation due to aliasing of higher frequencies into the bandwidth for classification of ECG signals, to switch to low resolution processing, hence saving power and enhances battery lifetime. Another short-coming noticed in the literature published so far is that the classification algorithm is implemented in digital domain, which turns out to be a power hungry approach. Moreover, Although analog domain implementations of QRS complexes detection schemes have been reported, they employ an external micro-controller to determine the threshold voltage. In this regard, finally a power-efficient low complexity CMOS fully analog classifier architecture and a heart rate estimator is added to the above scheme. It reduces the overall system power consumption by reducing the computational burden on the DSP. The complete proposed scheme consists of (i) an ultra-low power QRS complex detection circuit using an autonomous dynamic threshold voltage, hence discarding the need of any external microcontroller/DSP and calibration (ii) a power efficient analog classifier for the detection of three critical alarm types viz. asystole, extreme bradycardia and tachycardia. Additionally, a heart rate estimator that provides the number of QRS complexes within a period of one minute for cardiac rhythm (CR) and heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. The complete proposed architecture is implemented in UMC 0.18 µm CMOS technology with 1.8 V supply. The functionality of each of the individual blocks are successfully validated using postextraction process corner simulations and through real ECG test signals taken from the PhysioNet database. The capacitive feedback amplifier, Σ∆ ADC, AGC and the AFT are fabricated, and the measurement results are discussed here.     Nonlinear models and algorithms for RF systems digital calibration

    Focusing on the receiving side of a communication system, the current trend in pushing the digital domain ever more closer to the antenna sets heavy constraints on the accuracy and linearity of the analog front-end and the conversion devices. Moreover, mixed-signal implementations of Systems-on-Chip using nanoscale CMOS processes result in an overall poorer analog performance and a reduced yield. To cope with the impairments of the low performance analog section in this "dirty RF" scenario, two solutions exist: designing more complex analog processing architectures or to identify the errors and correct them in the digital domain using DSP algorithms. In the latter, constraints in the analog circuits' precision can be offloaded to a digital signal processor. This thesis aims at the development of a methodology for the analysis, the modeling and the compensation of the analog impairments arising in different stages of a receiving chain using digital calibration techniques. Both single and multiple channel architectures are addressed exploiting the capability of the calibration algorithm to homogenize all the channels' responses of a multi-channel system in addition to the compensation of nonlinearities in each response. The systems targeted for the application of digital post compensation are a pipeline ADC, a digital-IF sub-sampling receiver and a 4-channel TI-ADC. The research focuses on post distortion methods using nonlinear dynamic models to approximate the post-inverse of the nonlinear system and to correct the distortions arising from static and dynamic errors. Volterra model is used due to its general approximation capabilities for the compensation of nonlinear systems with memory. Digital calibration is applied to a Sample and Hold and to a pipeline ADC simulated in the 45nm process, demonstrating high linearity improvement even with incomplete settling errors enabling the use of faster clock speeds. An extended model based on the baseband Volterra series is proposed and applied to the compensation of a digital-IF sub-sampling receiver. This architecture envisages frequency selectivity carried out at IF by an active band-pass CMOS filter causing in-band and out-of-band nonlinear distortions. The improved performance of the proposed model is demonstrated with circuital simulations of a 10th-order band pass filter, realized using a five-stage Gm-C Biquad cascade, and validated using out-of-sample sinusoidal and QAM signals. The same technique is extended to an array receiver with mismatched channels' responses showing that digital calibration can compensate the loss of directivity and enhance the overall system SFDR. An iterative backward pruning is applied to the Volterra models showing that complexity can be reduced without impacting linearity, obtaining state-of-the-art accuracy/complexity performance. Calibration of Time-Interleaved ADCs, widely used in RF-to-digital wideband receivers, is carried out developing ad hoc models because the steep discontinuities generated by the imperfect canceling of aliasing would require a huge number of terms in a polynomial approximation. A closed-form solution is derived for a 4-channel TI-ADC affected by gain errors and timing skews solving the perfect reconstruction equations. A background calibration technique is presented based on cyclo-stationary filter banks architecture. Convergence speed and accuracy of the recursive algorithm are discussed and complexity reduction techniques are applied

Since mobile terminals inherently operate on batteries, their power budget is severely constrained. To keep up with the ever increasing data-rate, an ever-decreasing power per bit is required to maintain the battery lifetime. The RF oscillator is the second most power-hungry block of a wireless radio (after power amplifiers). Consequently, any power reduction in an RF oscillator will greatly benefit the overall power efficiency of the cellular transceiver. Moreover, the RF oscillators' purity limits the transceiver performance. The oscillator's phase noise results in power leakage into adjacent channels in a transmit mode and reciprocal mixing in a receive mode. On the other hand, the multi-standard and multi-band transceivers that are now trending demand wide tuning range oscillators. However, broadening the oscillator’s tuning range is usually at the expense of die area (cost) or phase noise.
