    Machine Learning-based Framework for Optimally Solving the Analytical Inverse Kinematics for Redundant Manipulators

    Solving the analytical inverse kinematics (IK) of redundant manipulators in real time is a difficult problem in robotics since its solution for a given target pose is not unique. Moreover, choosing the optimal IK solution with respect to application-specific demands helps to improve the robustness and to increase the success rate when driving the manipulator from its current configuration towards a desired pose. This is necessary, especially in high-dynamic tasks like catching objects in mid-flights. To compute a suitable target configuration in the joint space for a given target pose in the trajectory planning context, various factors such as travel time or manipulability must be considered. However, these factors increase the complexity of the overall problem which impedes real-time implementation. In this paper, a real-time framework to compute the analytical inverse kinematics of a redundant robot is presented. To this end, the analytical IK of the redundant manipulator is parameterized by so-called redundancy parameters, which are combined with a target pose to yield a unique IK solution. Most existing works in the literature either try to approximate the direct mapping from the desired pose of the manipulator to the solution of the IK or cluster the entire workspace to find IK solutions. In contrast, the proposed framework directly learns these redundancy parameters by using a neural network (NN) that provides the optimal IK solution with respect to the manipulability and the closeness to the current robot configuration. Monte Carlo simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed approach which is accurate and real-time capable (\approx \SI{32}{\micro\second}) on the KUKA LBR iiwa 14 R820

    Human-like arm motion generation: a review

    In the last decade, the objectives outlined by the needs of personal robotics have led to the rise of new biologically-inspired techniques for arm motion planning. This paper presents a literature review of the most recent research on the generation of human-like arm movements in humanoid and manipulation robotic systems. Search methods and inclusion criteria are described. The studies are analyzed taking into consideration the sources of publication, the experimental settings, the type of movements, the technical approach, and the human motor principles that have been used to inspire and assess human-likeness. Results show that there is a strong focus on the generation of single-arm reaching movements and biomimetic-based methods. However, there has been poor attention to manipulation, obstacle-avoidance mechanisms, and dual-arm motion generation. For these reasons, human-like arm motion generation may not fully respect human behavioral and neurological key features and may result restricted to specific tasks of human-robot interaction.     DawnIK: Decentralized Collision-Aware Inverse Kinematics Solver for Heterogeneous Multi-Arm Systems

    Although inverse kinematics of serial manipulators is a well studied problem, challenges still exist in finding smooth feasible solutions that are also collision aware. Furthermore, with collaborative and service robots gaining traction, different robotic systems have to work in close proximity. This means that the current inverse kinematics approaches have to not only avoid collisions with themselves but also collisions with other robot arms. Therefore, we present a novel approach to compute inverse kinematics for serial manipulators that take into account different constraints while trying to reach a desired end-effector position and/or orientation that avoids collisions with themselves and other arms. Unlike other constraint based approaches, we neither perform expensive inverse Jacobian computations nor do we require arms with redundant degrees of freedom. Instead, we formulate different constraints as weighted cost functions to be optimized by a non-linear optimization solver. Our approach is superior to the state-of-the-art CollisionIK in terms of collision avoidance in the presence of multiple arms in confined spaces with no detected collisions at all in all the experimental scenarios. When the probability of collision is low, our approach shows better performance at trajectory tracking as well. Additionally, our approach is capable of simultaneous yet decentralized control of multiple arms for trajectory tracking in intersecting workspace without any collisions.Comment: Salih Marangoz and Rohit Menon have equal authorshi

    Locomotion Trajectory Generation For Legged Robots

    This thesis addresses the problem of generating smooth and efficiently executable locomotion trajectories for legged robots under contact constraints. In addition, we want the trajectories to have the property that small changes in the foot position generate small changes in the joint target path. The first part of this thesis explores methods to select poses for a legged robot that maximises the workspace reachability while maintaining stability and contact constraints. It also explores methods to select configurations based on a reduced-dimensional search of the configuration space. The second part analyses time scaling strategy which tries to minimize the execution time while obeying the velocity and acceleration constraints. These two parts effectively result in smooth feasible trajectories for legged robots. Experiments on the RoboSimian robot demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of the strategies described for walking and climbing on a rock climbing wall

    Solving robotic kinematic problems : singularities and inverse kinematics

    Kinematics is a branch of classical mechanics that describes the motion of points, bodies, and systems of bodies without considering the forces that cause such motion. For serial robot manipulators, kinematics consists of describing the open chain geometry as well as the position, velocity and/or acceleration of each one of its components. Rigid serial robot manipulators are designed as a sequence of rigid bodies, called links, connected by motor-actuated pairs, called joints, that provide relative motion between consecutive links. Two kinematic problems of special relevance for serial robots are: - Singularities: are the configurations where the robot loses at least one degree of freedom (DOF). This is equivalent to: (a) The robot cannot translate or rotate its end-effector in at least one direction. (b) Unbounded joint velocities are required to generate finite linear and angular velocities. Either if it is real-time teleoperation or off-line path planning, singularities must be addressed to make the robot exhibit a good performance for a given task. The objective is not only to identify the singularities and their associated singular directions but to design strategies to avoid or handle them. - Inverse kinematic problem: Given a particular position and orientation of the end-effector, also known as the end-effector pose, the inverse kinematics consists of finding the configurations that provide such desired pose. The importance of the inverse kinematics relies on its role in the programming and control of serial robots. Besides, since for each given pose the inverse kinematics has up to sixteen different solutions, the objective is to find a closed-form method for solving this problem, since closed-form methods allow to obtain all the solutions in a compact form. The main goal of the Ph.D. dissertation is to contribute to the solution of both problems. In particular, with respect to the singularity problem, a novel scheme for the identification of the singularities and their associated singular directions is introduced. Moreover, geometric algebra is used to simplify such identification and to provide a distance function in the configuration space of the robot that allows the definition of algorithms for avoiding them. With respect to the inverse kinematics, redundant robots are reduced to non-redundant ones by selecting a set of joints, denoted redundant joints, and by parameterizing their joint variables. This selection is made through a workspace analysis which also provides an upper bound for the number of different closed-form solutions. Once these joints have been identified, several closed-form methods developed for non-redundant manipulators can be applied to obtain the analytical expressions of all the solutions. One of these methods is a novel strategy developed using again the conformal model of the spatial geometric algebra. To sum up, the Ph.D dissertation provides a rigorous analysis of the two above-mentioned kinematic problems as well as novel strategies for solving them. To illustrate the different results introduced in the Ph.D. memory, examples are given at the end of each of its chapters.La cinemática es una rama de la mecánica clásica que describe el movimiento de puntos, cuerpos y sistemas de cuerpos sin considerar las fuerzas que causan dicho movimiento. Además, dado que para cada pose la cinemática inversa tiene hasta dieciséis soluciones diferentes, el objetivo es encontrar un método cerrado para resolver este problema, ya que los métodos cerrados permiten obtener todas las soluciones en una forma compacta. El objetivo principal de la tesis doctoral es contribuir a la solución de ambos problemas. En particular, con respecto al problema de las singularidades, se presenta un nuevo método para su identificación basado en el álgebra geométrica. Además, el álgebra geométrica permite definir una distancia en el espacio de configuraciones del robot que permite la definición de distintos algoritmos para evitar las configuraciones singulares.     Generating whole body movements for dynamics anthropomorphic systems under constraints

    Cette thèse étudie la question de la génération de mouvements corps-complet pour des systèmes anthropomorphes. Elle considère le problème de la modélisation et de la commande en abordant la question difficile de la génération de mouvements ressemblant à ceux de l'homme. En premier lieu, un modèle dynamique du robot humanoïde HRP-2 est élaboré à partir de l'algorithme récursif de Newton-Euler pour les vecteurs spatiaux. Un nouveau schéma de commande dynamique est ensuite développé, en utilisant une cascade de programmes quadratiques (QP) optimisant des fonctions coûts et calculant les couples de commande en satisfaisant des contraintes d'égalité et d'inégalité. La cascade de problèmes quadratiques est définie par une pile de tâches associée à un ordre de priorité. Nous proposons ensuite une formulation unifiée des contraintes de contacts planaires et nous montrons que la méthode proposée permet de prendre en compte plusieurs contacts non coplanaires et généralise la contrainte usuelle du ZMP dans le cas où seulement les pieds sont en contact avec le sol. Nous relions ensuite les algorithmes de génération de mouvement issus de la robotique aux outils de capture du mouvement humain en développant une méthode originale de génération de mouvement visant à imiter le mouvement humain. Cette méthode est basée sur le recalage des données capturées et l'édition du mouvement en utilisant le solveur hiérarchique précédemment introduit et la définition de tâches et de contraintes dynamiques. Cette méthode originale permet d'ajuster un mouvement humain capturé pour le reproduire fidèlement sur un humanoïde en respectant sa propre dynamique. Enfin, dans le but de simuler des mouvements qui ressemblent à ceux de l'homme, nous développons un modèle anthropomorphe ayant un nombre de degrés de liberté supérieur à celui du robot humanoïde HRP2. Le solveur générique est utilisé pour simuler le mouvement sur ce nouveau modèle. Une série de tâches est définie pour décrire un scénario joué par un humain. Nous montrons, par une simple analyse qualitative du mouvement, que la prise en compte du modèle dynamique permet d'accroitre naturellement le réalisme du mouvement.This thesis studies the question of whole body motion generation for anthropomorphic systems. Within this work, the problem of modeling and control is considered by addressing the difficult issue of generating human-like motion. First, a dynamic model of the humanoid robot HRP-2 is elaborated based on the recursive Newton-Euler algorithm for spatial vectors. A new dynamic control scheme is then developed adopting a cascade of quadratic programs (QP) optimizing the cost functions and computing the torque control while satisfying equality and inequality constraints. The cascade of the quadratic programs is defined by a stack of tasks associated to a priority order. Next, we propose a unified formulation of the planar contact constraints, and we demonstrate that the proposed method allows taking into account multiple non coplanar contacts and generalizes the common ZMP constraint when only the feet are in contact with the ground. Then, we link the algorithms of motion generation resulting from robotics to the human motion capture tools by developing an original method of motion generation aiming at the imitation of the human motion. This method is based on the reshaping of the captured data and the motion editing by using the hierarchical solver previously introduced and the definition of dynamic tasks and constraints. This original method allows adjusting a captured human motion in order to reliably reproduce it on a humanoid while respecting its own dynamics. Finally, in order to simulate movements resembling to those of humans, we develop an anthropomorphic model with higher number of degrees of freedom than the one of HRP-2. The generic solver is used to simulate motion on this new model. A sequence of tasks is defined to describe a scenario played by a human. By a simple qualitative analysis of motion, we demonstrate that taking into account the dynamics provides a natural way to generate human-like movements

    Kinematics and Robot Design II (KaRD2019) and III (KaRD2020)

    This volume collects papers published in two Special Issues “Kinematics and Robot Design II, KaRD2019” (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/KRD2019) and “Kinematics and Robot Design III, KaRD2020” (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/robotics/special_issues/KaRD2020), which are the second and third issues of the KaRD Special Issue series hosted by the open access journal robotics.The KaRD series is an open environment where researchers present their works and discuss all topics focused on the many aspects that involve kinematics in the design of robotic/automatic systems. It aims at being an established reference for researchers in the field as other serial international conferences/publications are. Even though the KaRD series publishes one Special Issue per year, all the received papers are peer-reviewed as soon as they are submitted and, if accepted, they are immediately published in MDPI Robotics. Kinematics is so intimately related to the design of robotic/automatic systems that the admitted topics of the KaRD series practically cover all the subjects normally present in well-established international conferences on “mechanisms and robotics”.KaRD2019 together with KaRD2020 received 22 papers and, after the peer-review process, accepted only 17 papers. The accepted papers cover problems related to theoretical/computational kinematics, to biomedical engineering and to other design/applicative aspects
