    A Controlled Study of the Flipped Classroom With Numerical Methods for Engineers

    Recent advances in technology and ideology have unlocked entirely new directions for education research. Mounting pressure from increasing tuition costs and free, online course offerings are opening discussion and catalyzing change in the physical classroom. The flipped classroom is at the center of this discussion. The flipped classroom is a new pedagogical method, which employs asynchronous video lectures, practice problems as homework, and active, group-based problem-solving activities in the classroom. It represents a unique combination of learning theories once thought to be incompatible—active, problem-based learning activities founded upon constructivist schema and instructional lectures derived from direct instruction methods founded upon behaviorist principles. The primary reason for examining this teaching method is that it holds the promise of delivering the best from both worlds. A controlled study of a sophomore-level numerical methods course was conducted using video lectures and model-eliciting activities (MEAs) in one section (treatment) and traditional group lecture-based teaching in the other (comparison). This study compared knowledge-based outcomes on two dimensions: conceptual understanding and conventional problem-solving ability. Homework and unit exams were used to assess conventional problem-solving ability, while quizzes and a conceptual test were used to measure conceptual understanding. There was no difference between sections on conceptual under- standing as measured by quizzes and concept test scores. The difference between average exam scores was also not significant. However, homework scores were significantly lower by 15.5 percentage points (out of 100), which was equivalent to an effect size of 0.70. This difference appears to be due to the fact that students in the MEA/video lecture section had a higher workload than students in the comparison section and consequently neglected to do some of the homework because it was not heavily weighted in the final course grade. A comparison of student evaluations across the sections of this course revealed that perceptions were significantly lower for the MEA/video lecture section on 3 items (out of 18). Based on student feedback, it is recommended that future implementations ensure tighter integration between MEAs and other required course assignments. This could involve using a higher number of shorter MEAs and more focus on the early introduction of MEAs to students

    Baobab LIMS: An open source biobank laboratory information management system for resource-limited settings

    Philosophiae Doctor - PhDA laboratory information management system (LIMS) is central to the informatics infrastructure that underlies biobanking activities. To date, a wide range of commercial and open source LIMS are available. The decision to opt for one LIMS over another is often influenced by the needs of the biobank clients and researchers, as well as available financial resources. However, to find a LIMS that incorporates all possible requirements of a biobank may often be a complicated endeavour. The need to implement biobank standard operation procedures as well as stimulate the use of standards for biobank data representation motivated the development of Baobab LIMS, an open source LIMS for Biobanking. Baobab LIMS comprises modules for biospecimen kit assembly, shipping of biospecimen kits, storage management, analysis requests, reporting, and invoicing. Baobab LIMS is based on the Plone web-content management framework, a server-client-based system, whereby the end user is able to access the system securely through the internet on a standard web browser, thereby eliminating the need for standalone installations on all machines. The Baobab LIMS components were tested and evaluated in three human biobanks. The testing of the LIMS modules aided in the mapping of the biobanks requirements to the LIMS functionalities, and furthermore, it helped to reveal new user suggestions, such as the enhancement of the online documentation. The user suggestions are demonstrated to be important for both LIMS strengthen and biobank sustainability. Ultimately, the practical LIMS evaluations showed the ability of Boabab LIMS to be used in the management of human biobanks operations of relatively different biobanking workflows

In fact, it can also nourish the bodies and souls due to the permissibility and purity of the products. Currently, the awareness of some doubtful and questionable ingredients in the food and pharmaceutical products in the market has increased. Since the 23rd meeting of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC) on November 2007, OIC has organized a conference and its sequential meeting on The OIC Halal Food Standard. Three main documents – OIC General Guidelines on Halal Food, Guidelines for Bodies Providing Halal Certification, and Guidelines for the Authorized Accreditation Body Accrediting Halal Certification Bodies – have been finalized. However, the concern is now wider and more complex in nature incorporating not only the traditional aspects but also the biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes and other relevant processes. Thus, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive guideline. The concept of Islamic Manufacturing Practice (IMP) has been introduced in Malaysia to fill this void but unfortunately, the contents of the IMP are still equivocal and limited.     Real options modeling and valuation of price adjustment flexibility with an application to the leasing industry

    Uncertainty poses not only threats but also opportunities. This study sought to build the scientific foundation for introducing a real options (ROs) methodology for price risk management to the leasing industry. A price risk management that allows for both coping with threats and taking advantage of opportunities. In the leasing industry, fixed rate long-term lease contracts help contract parties stabilize cash flows within volatile markets. The contract\u27s term, however, may be extended long enough that prevent capturing the opportunities of gaining greater profits or reducing expenses. Therefore, the flexibility that enables participants to take advantage of favorable market price is desirable. This discussion is dedicated to the study of three different forms of price adjustments flexibility: 1) single-sided price adjustment flexibility (SSPAF). 2) double-sided price adjustment flexibility (DSPAF) with the preemptive right to exercise. 3) DSPAF with the non-preemptive right to exercise. Each was designed to meet various participants flexibility requirements and budgets. An ROs methodology was developed to model, price, and optimize these flexibility clauses. The proposed approach was then tested in the example of Time Charter (TC) rate contracts from the maritime transport industry. Both the metric and the process for quantifying the benefit of the proposed flexibility clauses are provided. This work provides an alternative approach to the price risk management, which is accessible to all participants in the leasing industry. It is also the starting point in studying the multiple-party, multiple-exercisable price adjustment flexibility. Moreover, both the flexibility designs and the proposed ROs methodology for price risk management are applicable to not only other forms of lease contracts but also to other forms of contract relationships. --Abstract, page iii

    Marine life in the Mediterranean Sea is threatened by intensive human activities such as fisheries, ship traffic, pollution and coastal development. Cetaceans and other vertebrates are affected not only by chemical pollution, but also by noise pollution (Richardson et al., 1995; Simmonds et al., 2004). Noise has become a ubiquitous form of marine pollution, especially in areas of heavy maritime traffic and along developed coasts. Intense underwater noise is generated by airguns, widely used for geophysical exploration in the oil and gas industry as well as for academic and government research purposes; by high power sonar, either military or civilian; by ship traffic; by shoreline and offshore construction works; and by a number of other commercial, scientific, military and industrial sources. The most powerful noises (from airguns, sonars, and explosions) may directly injure animals in the vicinity of the source. General ship traffic, heavy industries on the coast and a variety of other human activities generally do not generate such intense noise, but the acoustic pollution they produce is constant over time and may affect large areas. It may be a serious hazard not only to individual animals, but also to entire populations. Such increased background noise affects underwater life just as airborne noise affects terrestrial animals, including human beings.peer-reviewe
