An evalution of the use subject based information gateways: case Study ADAM
Nowadays, end-users have quick and direct access to a massive amount of information available on the net. However, this information is unorganised expecting users to be able to identify and evaluate it in accordance with their information needs. Subject Based Information Gateways (SBIGs), organised collections of networked information, provide users with a catalogue of authoritative Internet resources, which can be searched or/and browsed. This paper provides an evaluation of one such gateway - the Art, Design, Architecture & Media Gateway (ADAM). It provides information on who these digital users are, how often they use the service, what their reasons for use are, which search methods and services provided they prefer, and what are the advantages and/or disadvantages of an online information service
Quality in home care: client and provider views
This paper reports on the findings of a small-scale study that investigated the meaning and delivery of quality in home care in four local authorities from the perspective of informal carers, users and providers and explored the views of users about proposed changes in the ethos of home care stipulated in the National Care Standards for Domiciliary Care (2003).
We start by outlining the method used and then describe the characteristics of the consulted provider agencies and the characteristics and needs of the service users. Section 5 reports users’ experience of the home care service and section 6 the important aspects of quality from the perspective of users and providers. Finally, the report addresses the implications of our findings on the future development of home care provision
Communication systems supporting multimedia multi-user applications
Multimedia multi-user applications are becoming more and more important. Intensive research is underway on the design of protocols and protocol entities for future communication systems supporting multimedia multi-user applications. The development of a service description ensures that protocol designs actually produce the required functional behavior. The authors explain the approach to the description of a multimedia multi-user service. An example illustrates the use of the service description in the design of communication systems. Living Innovation Laboratory Model Design and Implementation
Living Innovation Laboratory (LIL) is an open and recyclable way for
multidisciplinary researchers to remote control resources and co-develop user
centered projects. In the past few years, there were several papers about LIL
published and trying to discuss and define the model and architecture of LIL.
People all acknowledge about the three characteristics of LIL: user centered,
co-creation, and context aware, which make it distinguished from test platform
and other innovation approaches. Its existing model consists of five phases:
initialization, preparation, formation, development, and evaluation.
Goal Net is a goal-oriented methodology to formularize a progress. In this
thesis, Goal Net is adopted to subtract a detailed and systemic methodology for
LIL. LIL Goal Net Model breaks the five phases of LIL into more detailed steps.
Big data, crowd sourcing, crowd funding and crowd testing take place in
suitable steps to realize UUI, MCC and PCA throughout the innovation process in
LIL 2.0. It would become a guideline for any company or organization to develop
a project in the form of an LIL 2.0 project.
To prove the feasibility of LIL Goal Net Model, it was applied to two real
cases. One project is a Kinect game and the other one is an Internet product.
They were both transformed to LIL 2.0 successfully, based on LIL goal net based
methodology. The two projects were evaluated by phenomenography, which was a
qualitative research method to study human experiences and their relations in
hope of finding the better way to improve human experiences. Through
phenomenographic study, the positive evaluation results showed that the new
generation of LIL had more advantages in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.Comment: This is a book draf
The Lifecycle and Cascade of WeChat Social Messaging Groups
Social instant messaging services are emerging as a transformative form with
which people connect, communicate with friends in their daily life - they
catalyze the formation of social groups, and they bring people stronger sense
of community and connection. However, research community still knows little
about the formation and evolution of groups in the context of social messaging
- their lifecycles, the change in their underlying structures over time, and
the diffusion processes by which they develop new members. In this paper, we
analyze the daily usage logs from WeChat group messaging platform - the largest
standalone messaging communication service in China - with the goal of
understanding the processes by which social messaging groups come together,
grow new members, and evolve over time. Specifically, we discover a strong
dichotomy among groups in terms of their lifecycle, and develop a separability
model by taking into account a broad range of group-level features, showing
that long-term and short-term groups are inherently distinct. We also found
that the lifecycle of messaging groups is largely dependent on their social
roles and functions in users' daily social experiences and specific purposes.
Given the strong separability between the long-term and short-term groups, we
further address the problem concerning the early prediction of successful
communities. In addition to modeling the growth and evolution from group-level
perspective, we investigate the individual-level attributes of group members
and study the diffusion process by which groups gain new members. By
considering members' historical engagement behavior as well as the local social
network structure that they embedded in, we develop a membership cascade model
and demonstrate the effectiveness by achieving AUC of 95.31% in predicting
inviter, and an AUC of 98.66% in predicting invitee.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, to appear in proceedings of the 25th

Using mobile RE tools to give end-users their own voice
Researchers highlight end-user involvement in system design as an important concept for developing useful and usable solutions. However, end-user involvement in software engineering is still an open-ended topic. Novel paradigms such as service-oriented computing strengthen the need for more active end-user involvement in order to provide systems that are tailored to individual end-user needs. Our work is based on the fact that the majority of end-users are familiar with mobile devices and use an increasing number of mobile applications. A mobile tool enabling end-user led requirements elicitation could be just one of many applications installed on end-users' mobile devices. In this paper, we present a framework of end-user involvement in requirements elicitation which motivates our research. The main contribution of our research is a tool-supported requirements elicitation approach allowing end-users to document needs in situ. Furthermore, we present first evaluation results to highlight the feasibility of on-site end-user led requirements elicitation
