    Harmonic current sideband indicators (HCSBIs) for broken bar detection and diagnostics in cage induction motors

    Induction motor bar breakages have been increasingly studied in the last decades because of economic interests in developing techniques that permit on-line, non-invasive, early detection of motor faults in power plants. This work is specifically focused on broken bar detection and fault severity assessment in three phase power cage motors fed by non-sinusoidal voltage sources. In this work some new fault indicators for rotor bar breakages detection in squirrel cage induction motors are proposed, mathematically developed and experimentally proved. They are based on the sidebands of phase current upper harmonics, and they are well suited especially for converter-fed induction motors. The ratios I(7-2s)f/I5f and I(5+2s)f/I7f , I(13-2s)f/I11f and I(11+2s)f/I13f are examples of such new indicators, and they are not dependent on load torque and drive inertia, as classical indicators do. Their frequency-dependence has been also examined both theoretically and experimentally, and it was found less remarkable with respect to other indicators. Moreover, their values increase linearly with the quantity of consecutive broken bars, almost for not too much advanced faults; on 4-poles motors they were found quietly like the per-unit number of broken bars (ratio on total bar number). An original formulation is presented for motor mathematical modeling, based on the Generalized Symmetrical Components Theory, for sidebands amplitude computation. A complete motor model (involving all the elementary machine electrical circuits, as stator belts and rotor mesh loops) has been used for computer simulations; the same model was then transformed by using some complex Fortescue’s matrices to obtain a steady-state linear solution, solvable for stator and rotor currents, in healthy and faulty conditions. By exploiting the model, the formal definition of a set of new broken bar indicators was finally obtained. Machine simulations carried out by running the complete numerical model confirmed the accuracy of the model, and the theoretical previsions. Experimental work was performed by using a square-wave inverter-fed motor with an appositely prepared cage, for easy testing with increasing number of broken bars and without motor dismounting. Moreover, extensive experimentation was carried out on three industrial motors with different power and poles number, with increasing load, frequency and fault gravity for methodology validation. Finally, the ideas exposed in this work led to a patent application, owned by the University of Rome “Sapienza”

    A Knowledge-Based System for Reliability-Centered Maintenance in the Chemical Industry.

    An innovative new framework for the implementation of reliability centered maintenance (RCM) in industrial settings was developed and implemented during this study. Fuzzy reasoning algorithms were designed to evaluate and assess the likelihood of equipment failure mode precipitation and aggravation. Furthermore, an alternative to the traditional RCM decision tree for prioritizing equipment failure modes was defined through the development of an approximate reasoning scheme. This priority scheme not only takes into account the relevancy of failure modes on local and product effects, but also their possibility of occurrence, as well as associated negative consequences on adjacent machinery. The new RCM approach was implemented through an objected-oriented expert system built to perform reliability centered maintenance analysis on industrial chemical processes. The developed expert system reads the process flowsheet generated by ASPEN Plus, a chemical process simulation package, and, based on relevant machine operating data, it provides the user with the final process RCM availability structure diagram. This availability diagram consists of a listing of all critical machine failure modes likely to occur, prioritized according to their overall negative impact on the process, as well as important information on their corresponding local and system effects, and suggested controls for their detection. Although the chemical process industry was selected as the application domain for this research, the developed RCM framework was designed to be extensible across the entire maintenance activity spectrum, regardless of the type of industry associated.     In the last years sustainability has become a topic of global concern and a key issue in the strategic agenda of both business organizations and public authorities and organisations. Significant changes in business landscape, the emergence of new technology, including social media, the pressure of new social concerns, have called into question established conceptualizations of competitiveness, wealth creation and growth. New and unaddressed set of issues regarding how private and public organisations manage and invest their resources to create sustainable value have brought to light. In particular the increasing focus on environmental and social themes has suggested new dimensions to be taken into account in the value creation dynamics, both at organisations and communities level. For companies the need of integrating corporate social and environmental responsibility issues into strategy and daily business operations, pose profound challenges, which, in turn, involve numerous processes and complex decisions influenced by many stakeholders. Facing these challenges calls for the creation, use and exploitation of new knowledge as well as the development of proper management models, approaches and tools aimed to contribute to the development and realization of environmentally and socially sustainable business strategies and practices

    The Romance of Community: Form and Ideology in Jonathan Frazen Fiction

    Jonathan Franzen (1959) es sin duda uno de los novelistas norteamericanos más importantes de la última década. Ha recibido premios importantes como el National Book Award y disfruta de una poco frecuente combinación de elogios de la crítica y éxito de ventas. Es el autor más reconocido de una generación de narradores formada por, entre otros, David Foster Wallace, Michael Chabon o Jeffrey Eugenides. Franzen ha publicado ya cuatro novelas y dos volúmenes de no-ficción. Sin embargo, es evidente que aún no ha recibido la debida atención desde el punto de vista académico. Este trabajo intenta contribuir a rellenar esa laguna crítica. La obra de Franzen tiene un marcado componente social que la hace particularmente interesante para abordar una serie de procesos socio-históricos y culturales clave en Estados Unidos y otras partes del mundo dentro del marco del capitalismo tardío y la globalización: fragmentación social, comercialización de la cultura, expansión suburbana, contienda ideológica entre conservadores y liberales, declive comunitario, etc. Por otra parte, en la obra de Franzen se observa una marcada evolución estilística desde sus dos primeras novelas, claramente influidas por autores postmodernistas como Thomas Pynchon y Don DeLillo, hacia una narrativa más tradicional que ha sido asociada por la crítica al realismo decimonónico en las dos siguientes. Esta circunstancia ha sido aprovechada por ciertos críticos para proclamar el fin del postmodernismo narrativo. La pertinencia de un análisis riguroso y exhaustivo, hasta ahora inexistente, de la obra de ficción del novelista norteamericano desde un punto de vista ideológico y formal es evidente. En este trabajo se lleva a cabo dicho análisis enmarcado en un estudio de los aspectos relevantes del contexto histórico, cultural y político de la obra de Franzen
