    Mestrado em Decisão Económica e EmpresarialEsta tese descreve como as moedas digitais se tornaram no novo fenómeno nos mercados financeiros e como a mais popular das moedas digitais - Bitcoin - originou perguntas cruciais sobre o seu valor e como ao mesmo tempo as suas séries financeiras criaram uma oportunidade para estudar várias dinâmicas sobre o preço, que tipicamente estão fortemente ligadas a movimentos especulativos e sem análise fundamental. Com a utilização de um modelo GARCH(1,1) sobre dados diários e centrando-se em dois fenómenos recentes - moedas digitais, nomeadamente Bitcoin e conteúdo web oriundo do Google Trends, Wikipedia e Twitter - verificámos que os retornos da Bitcoin são fortemente impulsionados pela sua popularidade. Assim, analisando este relacionamento e modelando a existência de variâncias condicionais heterocedásticas demonstramos que o conteúdo proveniente de motores de busca e redes sociais e a flutuação nos preços Bitcoin estão intensamente ligados e que esta relação exibe alguma previsibilidade.This thesis describes how digital currencies have rose as a new interesting phenomenon in the financial markets and how the most popular of the digital currencies - BitCoin - have risen crucial questions about their exchange rates and also represents a field to study the dynamics of this market, which is strongly connected with speculative traders with no fundamentals as there is no fundamental value to the currency. Using a GARCH(1,1) model on daily data and focusing on two emerging phenomena of recent years - digital currencies, particularly Bitcoin, and web content provided by search queries on Google Trends and Wikipedia and tweets from Twitter - we discover that Bitcoin returns are driven primarily by its popularity. Thus, we analyze their relationship, the existence of volatility clustering and demonstrate that the web content and Bitcoin prices are connected and they exhibit some predictable power

    Twitter alloy steel disambiguation and user relevance via one-class and two-class news titles classifiers

    This paper addresses the nontrivial task of Twitter financial disam- biguation (TFD), which is relevant to filter financial domain tweets (e.g., alloy steel or coffee prices) when no unique identifiers (e.g., cashtags) are adopted. To automate TFD, we propose a transfer learning approach that uses freely labeled news titles to train diverse one-class and two-class classification methods. These include different text handling transforms, adaptations of statistical measures and modern machine learning methods, including support vector machines (SVM), deep autoencoders and multilayer perceptrons. As a case study, we analyzed the domain of alloy steel prices, collecting a recent Twitter dataset. Overall, the best results were achieved by a two-class SVM fed with TFD statistical measures and topic model features, obtaining an 80% and 71% discrimination level when tested with 11,081 and 3,000 manually labeled tweets. The best one-class performance (78% and 69% for the same test tweets) was obtained by a term frequency-inverse document frequency classifier (TF-IDFC). These models were further used to gen- erate a Financial User Relevance rank (FUR) score, aiming to filter relevant users. The SVM and TF-IDFC FUR models obtained a predictive user discrimination level of 80% and 75% when tested with a manually labeled test sample of 418 users. These results confirm the proposed joint TFD-FUR approach as a valuable tool for the selection of Twitter texts and users for financial social media analytics (e.g., sentiment analysis, detection of influential users).Research carried out with the support of resources of Big and Open Data Innovation Laboratory (BODaI-Lab), University of Brescia, granted by Fondazione Cariplo and Regione Lombardia

    AbstractWell-being is an important value for people's lives, and it could be considered as an index of societal progress. Researchers have suggested two main approaches for the overall measurement of well-being, the objective and the subjective well-being. Both approaches, as well as their relevant dimensions, have been traditionally captured with surveys. During the last decades, new data sources have been suggested as an alternative or complement to traditional data. This paper aims to present the theoretical background of well-being, by distinguishing between objective and subjective approaches, their relevant dimensions, the new data sources used for their measurement and relevant studies. We also intend to shed light on still barely unexplored dimensions and data sources that could potentially contribute as a key for public policing and social development

    Exploring the value of big data analysis of Twitter tweets and share prices

    Over the past decade, the use of social media (SM) such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Tumblr has dramatically increased. Using SM, millions of users are creating large amounts of data every day. According to some estimates ninety per cent of the content on the Internet is now user generated. Social Media (SM) can be seen as a distributed content creation and sharing platform based on Web 2.0 technologies. SM sites make it very easy for its users to publish text, pictures, links, messages or videos without the need to be able to program. Users post reviews on products and services they bought, write about their interests and intentions or give their opinions and views on political subjects. SM has also been a key factor in mass movements such as the Arab Spring and the Occupy Wall Street protests and is used for human aid and disaster relief (HADR). There is a growing interest in SM analysis from organisations for detecting new trends, getting user opinions on their products and services or finding out about their online reputation. Companies such as Amazon or eBay use SM data for their recommendation engines and to generate more business. TV stations buy data about opinions on their TV programs from Facebook to find out what the popularity of a certain TV show is. Companies such as Topsy, Gnip, DataSift and Zoomph have built their entire business models around SM analysis. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the economic value of Twitter tweets. The economic value is determined by trying to predict the share price of a company. If the share price of a company can be predicted using SM data, it should be possible to deduce a monetary value. There is limited research on determining the economic value of SM data for “nowcasting”, predicting the present, and for forecasting. This study aims to determine the monetary value of Twitter by correlating the daily frequencies of positive and negative Tweets about the Apple company and some of its most popular products with the development of the Apple Inc. share price. If the number of positive tweets about Apple increases and the share price follows this development, the tweets have predictive information about the share price. A literature review has found that there is a growing interest in analysing SM data from different industries. A lot of research is conducted studying SM from various perspectives. Many studies try to determine the impact of online marketing campaigns or try to quantify the value of social capital. Others, in the area of behavioural economics, focus on the influence of SM on decision-making. There are studies trying to predict financial indicators such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). However, the literature review has indicated that there is no study correlating sentiment polarity on products and companies in tweets with the share price of the company. The theoretical framework used in this study is based on Computational Social Science (CSS) and Big Data. Supporting theories of CSS are Social Media Mining (SMM) and sentiment analysis. Supporting theories of Big Data are Data Mining (DM) and Predictive Analysis (PA). Machine learning (ML) techniques have been adopted to analyse and classify the tweets. In the first stage of the study, a body of tweets was collected and pre-processed, and then analysed for their sentiment polarity towards Apple Inc., the iPad and the iPhone. Several datasets were created using different pre-processing and analysis methods. The tweet frequencies were then represented as time series. The time series were analysed against the share price time series using the Granger causality test to determine if one time series has predictive information about the share price time series over the same period of time. For this study, several Predictive Analytics (PA) techniques on tweets were evaluated to predict the Apple share price. To collect and analyse the data, a framework has been developed based on the LingPipe (LingPipe 2015) Natural Language Processing (NLP) tool kit for sentiment analysis, and using R, the functional language and environment for statistical computing, for correlation analysis. Twitter provides an API (Application Programming Interface) to access and collect its data programmatically. Whereas no clear correlation could be determined, at least one dataset was showed to have some predictive information on the development of the Apple share price. The other datasets did not show to have any predictive capabilities. There are many data analysis and PA techniques. The techniques applied in this study did not indicate a direct correlation. However, some results suggest that this is due to noise or asymmetric distributions in the datasets. The study contributes to the literature by providing a quantitative analysis of SM data, for example tweets about Apple and its most popular products, the iPad and iPhone. It shows how SM data can be used for PA. It contributes to the literature on Big Data and SMM by showing how SM data can be collected, analysed and classified and explore if the share price of a company can be determined based on sentiment time series. It may ultimately lead to better decision making, for instance for investments or share buyback

    Investor sentiment as a factor in an APT model: an international perspective using the FEARS index

    A thesis submitted to the School of Economic and Business Sciences, Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, University of the Witwatersrand in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Commerce (M.Com) in Finance, Johannesburg June 2017Traditional finance theory surrounding the risk-return relationship is underpinned by the CAPM which posits that a single risk factor, specifically market risk, is priced into asset returns. Even though it is a popular asset pricing model, the CAPM has been widely criticised due to its unrealistic assumptions and the APT was developed to address the CAPM’s weaknesses. The APT framework allows for a multitude of risk factors to be priced into asset returns; implying that it can be used to model returns using either macroeconomic or microeconomic factors. As such, the APT allows for non-traditional factors, such as investor sentiment, to be included. A macroeconomic APT framework was developed for nine countries using the variables outlined by Chen, Roll, and Ross (1986) and investor sentiment was measured by the FEARS index (Da, Engelberg, & Gao, 2015). Regression testing was used to determine whether FEARS is a statistically significant explanatory variable in the APT model for each country. The results show that investor sentiment is a statistically significant explanatory variable for market returns in five out of the nine countries examined. These results add to the existing APT literature as they show that investor sentiment has a significant explanatory role in explaining asset prices and their associated returns. The international nature of this study allows it to be extended by considering the role that volatility spill-over or the contagion effect would have on each model.XL201

    Investment in the stock market is one of the much-admired investment actions. However, prediction of the stock market has remained a hard task because of the non-linearity exhibited. The non-linearity is due to multiple affecting factors such as global economy, political situations, sector performance, economic numbers, foreign institution investment, domestic institution investment, and so on. A proper set of such representative factors must be analyzed to make an efficient prediction model. Marginal improvement of prediction accuracy can be gainful for investors. This review provides a detailed analysis of research papers presenting stock market prediction techniques. These techniques are assessed in the time series analysis and sentiment analysis section. A detailed discussion on research gaps and issues is presented. The reviewed articles are analyzed based on the use of prediction techniques, optimization algorithms, feature selection methods, datasets, toolset, evaluation matrices, and input parameters. The techniques are further investigated to analyze relations of prediction methods with feature selection algorithm, datasets, feature selection methods, and input parameters. In addition, major problems raised in the present techniques are also discussed. This survey will provide researchers with deeper insight into various aspects of current stock market prediction methods
