    In this book, nine papers focusing on different fields of power electronics are gathered, all of which are in line with the present trends in research and industry. Given the generality of the Special Issue, the covered topics range from electrothermal models and losses models in semiconductors and magnetics to converters used in high-power applications. In this last case, the papers address specific problems such as the distortion due to zero-current detection or fault investigation using the fast Fourier transform, all being focused on analyzing the topologies of high-power high-density applications, such as the dual active bridge or the H-bridge multilevel inverter. All the papers provide enough insight in the analyzed issues to be used as the starting point of any research. Experimental or simulation results are presented to validate and help with the understanding of the proposed ideas. To summarize, this book will help the reader to solve specific problems in industrial equipment or to increase their knowledge in specific fields

    A GALLIUM NITRIDE INTEGRATED ONBOARD CHARGER

    Compared to Silicon metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs), Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices have a significant reduction in gate charge, output capacitance, and zero reverse recovery charge, enabling higher switching frequency operation and efficient power conversion. GaN devices are gaining momentum in power electronic systems such as electric vehicle (EV) charging system, due to their promises to significantly enhance the power density and efficiency. In this dissertation, a GaN-based integrated onboard charger (OBC) and auxiliary power module (APM) is proposed for EVs to ensure high efficiency, high frequency, high power density, and capability of bidirectional operation. The high switching frequency operation enabled by the GaN devices and the integration of OBC and APM bring many unique challenges, which are addressed in this dissertation. An important challenge is the optimal design of high-frequency magnetics for a high-frequency GaN-based power electronic interface. Another challenge is to achieve power flow management among three active ports while minimizing the circulating power. Furthermore, the impact of circuit layout parasitics could significantly deteriorate the system interface, due to the sensitivity of GaN device switching characteristics. In this work, the aforementioned challenges have been addressed. First, a comprehensive analysis of the front-end AC-DC power factor correction stage is presented, covering a detailed magnetic modeling technique to address the high-frequency magnetics challenge. Second, the modeling and control of a three-port DC-DC converter, interfacing the AC-DC stage, high-voltage traction battery and low-voltage battery, are discussed to address the power flow challenge. Advanced control methodologies are developed to realize power flow management while maintaining minimum circulating power and soft switching. Furthermore, a new three-winding high-frequency transformer design with improved power density and efficiency is achieved using a genetic-algorithm-based optimization approach. Finally, a GaN-based integrated charger prototype is developed to validate the proposed theoretical hypothesis. The experimental results showed that the GaN-based charging system has the capability of achieving simultaneous charging (G2B) of both HV and LV batteries with a peak efficiency of 95%

    Onduleur quasi-Z-source pour un système de traction de véhicules électriques à sources multiples : contrôle et gestion

    Abstract: Power electronics play a fundamental role and help to achieve the new goals of the automobiles in terms of energy economy and environment. The power electronic converters are the key elements which interface their power sources to the drivetrain of the electric vehicle (EV). They contribute to obtaining high efficiency and performance in power systems. However, traditional inverters such as voltage-source, current-source inverters and conventional two-stage inverters present some conceptual limitations. Consequently, many research efforts have been focused on developing new power electronic converters suitable for EVs application. In order to develop and enhance the performance of commercial multiple sources EV, this dissertation aims to select and to control the impedance source inverter and to provide management approaches for multiple sources EV traction system. A concise review of the main existing topologies of impedance source inverters has been presented. That enables to select QZSI (quasi-Z-source inverter) topology as promising architectures with better performance and reliability. The comparative study between the bidirectional conventional two-stage inverter and QZSI for EV applications has been presented. Furthermore, comparative study between different powertrain topologies regarding batteries aging index factors for an off-road EV has been explored. These studies permit to prove that QZSI topology represents a good candidate to be used in multi-source EV system. For improving the performance of QZSI applied to EVs, optimized fractional order PI (FOPI) controllers for QZSI is designed with the ant colony optimization algorithm (ACO-NM) to obtain more suitable aging performance index values for the battery. Moreover, this thesis proposes a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for EVs to allow an efficient energy use of the battery for a longer distance coverage. Optimized FOPI controller and the finite control set model predictive controller (FCS-MPC) for HESS using bidirectional QZSI is applied for the multi-source EV. The flux-weakening controller has been designed to provide a correct operation with the maximum available torque at any speed within current and voltage limits. Simulation investigations are performed to verify the topologies studied and the efficacity of the proposed controller structure with the bidirectional QZSI. Furthermore, Opal-RT-based real-time simulation has been implemented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed HESS control strategy. The results confirm the EV performance enhancement with the addition of supercapacitors using the proposed control configuration, allowing the efficient use of battery energy with the reduction of root-mean-square value, the mean value, and the standard deviation by 57%, 59%, and 27%, respectively, of battery current compared to the battery-only based inverter.L'électronique de puissance joue un rôle fondamental et contribue à atteindre les nouveaux objectifs de l'automobile en termes d'économie d'énergie et d'environnement. Les convertisseurs d’électroniques de puissance sont considérés comme les éléments clés qui interfacent leurs sources d'alimentation avec la chaîne de traction du véhicule électrique (VE). Ils contribuent à obtenir une efficacité et des performances élevées dans les systèmes électriques. Cependant, les onduleurs traditionnels tels que les onduleurs à source de tension, les onduleurs à source de courant et les onduleurs conventionnels à deux étages qui constituent les onduleurs les plus couramment utilisés, présentent certaines limitations conceptuelles. Par conséquent, de nombreux efforts de recherche se sont concentrés sur le développement de nouveaux convertisseurs d’électroniques de puissance adaptés à l'application aux véhicules électriques. Afin de développer et d'améliorer les performances des VEs à sources multiples commerciales, cette thèse vise à sélectionner, contrôler l'onduleur à source impédante et fournit une approche de gestion pour l'application du système de traction du VE à sources multiples. Une revue concise des principales topologies existantes d'onduleur à source impédante a été présentée. Cela a permis de sélectionner la topologie de l’onduleur quasi-Z-source (QZS) comme architectures prometteuses pouvant être utilisées dans les véhicules électriques, avec de meilleures performances et de fiabilité. L'étude comparative entre l'onduleur bidirectionnel conventionnel à deux étages et de celui à QZS pour les applications du VE a été présentée. En outre, une étude comparative entre différentes topologies de groupes motopropulseurs concernant les facteurs d'indice de vieillissement des batteries pour une application du VE hors route a été explorée. Ces études ont permis de prouver que la topologie de l’onduleur QZS représente une bonne topologie candidate à utiliser dans un système de VE à sources multiples. Pour améliorer les performances de l’onduleur QZS appliquées aux véhicules électriques, des contrôleurs PI d'ordre fractionnaire (PIOF) optimisés pour l’onduleur QZS sont conçus avec l'algorithme de colonies de fourmis afin d'obtenir des valeurs d'indice de performance de vieillissement plus appropriées pour la batterie. De plus, cette thèse propose un système de stockage d'énergie hybride (SSEH) pour le VE afin de permettre une utilisation efficace de l'énergie de la batterie pour une couverture de distance plus longue et une extension de son autonomie. L’optimisation du contrôleur PIOF et du contrôleur par modèle prédictif d'ensemble de contrôle fini (CMP-ECF) pour l’onduleur QZS bidirectionnel a été appliqué au VE à sources multiples avec des approches de gestion appuyées par des règles. Le contrôleur d'affaiblissement de flux magnétique du moteur a été conçu pour fournir un fonctionnement correct avec le couple maximal disponible à n'importe quelle vitesse dans les limites de courant et de tension. Des investigations et des simulations sont effectuées pour vérifier les différentes topologies étudiées et l'efficacité de la structure de contrôleur proposée avec l’onduleur QZS bidirectionnel. De plus, une simulation en temps réel basée sur Opal-RT a été mise en œuvre pour valider l'efficacité de la stratégie de contrôle SSEH proposée. Les résultats confirment l'amélioration des performances du VE avec l'ajout d'un supercondensateur utilisant la configuration du contrôle proposée, permettant une utilisation efficace de l'énergie de la batterie avec une réduction de la valeur moyenne quadratique, de la valeur moyenne et de l'écart type de 57%, 59% et 27%, respectivement, du courant de la batterie par rapport à l'onduleur connecté directement à la batterie

    Methods for improving stability and power quality in networks with high levels of power electronics

    Advanced power electronics are essential to the development of fully active electric power systems. There are, however, potential problems that can arise when high levels of power-electronic systems are distributed throughout a network. Most importantly, power electronics can degrade the quality of the power that is delivered by utility companies; furthermore, they can cause instabilities that lead to complete failures. New "smart" power systems are highly dynamic, meaning that a regulated converter thought to be stable under ideal conditions could easily become unstable for reasons well outside of the designer's control. This thesis addresses the issue of improving power quality in networks with high levels of power electronics. The core concept presented here is an effective on-line approach for the estimation of network impedance, a time-varying quantity that plays a key role in reducing power quality. Real-time information about the network impedance at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) can produce more stable power converters and pave the way for new measurement techniques that help to monitor power quality. This thesis also examines the application of network impedance measurements for producing model-based adaptive controllers that allow power-electronic systems to remain stable when connected to "non-stiff" networks. This work can be applied in any system that is heavily dependent on power electronics, including terrestrial "Smart Grids," all-electric ships, aircraft, and spacecraft

    Investigación sobre la flexibilidad de la demanda en redes eléctricas inteligentes: control directo de cargas

    In recent decades, the European Union has made decisive efforts to maintain its global leadership in renewable energies to meet climate change targets resulting from international agreements. There is a deliberate intention to reduce the usage of non-renewable energy sources and promote the exploitation of renewable generation at all levels as shown by energy production data within the Eurozone. The electricity sector illustrates a successful implementation of these energy policies: The electricity coming from combustible fuels was at historical lows in 2018, accounting for 83.6 % of the electricity generated from this source in 2008. By contrast, the pool of renewables reached almost 170 % of the 2008 production. Against this background, power systems worldwide are undergoing deep-seated changes due to the increasing penetration of these variable renewable energy sources and distributed energy resources that are intermittent and stochastic in nature. Under these conditions, achieving a continuous balance between generation and consumption becomes a challenge and may jeopardize the system stability, which points out the need of making the power system flexible enough as a response measure to this trend. This Ph.D. thesis researches one of the principal mechanisms providing flexibility to the power system: The demand-side management, seen from both the demand response and the energy efficiency perspectives. Power quality issues as a non-negligible part of energy efficiency are also addressed. To do so, several strategies have been deployed at a double level. In the residential sector, a direct load control strategy for smart appliances has been developed under a real-time pricing demand response scheme. This strategy seeks to minimize the daily cost of energy in presence of diverse energy resources and appliances. Furthermore, a spread spectrum technique has also been applied to mitigate the highfrequency distortion derived from the usage of LED technology lighting systems instead of traditional ones when energy efficiency needs to be improved. In the industrial sector, a load scheduling strategy to control the AC-AC power electronic converter in charge of supporting the electric-boosted glass melting furnaces has been developed. The benefit is two-fold: While it contributes to demand flexibility by shaving the peaks found under conventional control schemes, the power quality issues related to the emission of subharmonics are also kept to a minimum. Concerning the technologies, this Ph.D. thesis provides smart solutions, platforms, and devices to carry out these strategies: From the application of the internet of things paradigm to the development of the required electronics and the implementation of international standards within the energy industry.En las últimas décadas, la Unión Europea ha realizado esfuerzos decisivos para mantener su liderazgo mundial en energías renovables con el fin de cumplir los objetivos de cambio climático resultantes de los acuerdos internacionales. Muestra una intención deliberada de reducir el uso de fuentes de energía no renovable y promover la explotación de la generación renovable a todos los niveles, como demuestran los datos de producción de energía en la eurozona. El sector de la electricidad ilustra un caso de éxito de estas políticas energéticas: la electricidad procedente de combustibles fósiles estaba en mínimos históricos en 2018, representando el 83,6 % de la electricidad generada a partir de esta fuente en 2008; en cambio, el grupo de renovables alcanzó casi el 170 % de la producción de 2008. En este contexto, los sistemas eléctricos de todo el mundo están experimentando profundos cambios debido a la creciente penetración de estas fuentes de energía renovable y de recursos energéticos distribuidos que son de naturaleza variable, intermitente y estocástica. En estas condiciones, lograr un equilibrio continuo entre generación y consumo se convierte en un reto y puede poner en peligro la estabilidad del sistema, lo que señala la necesidad de flexibilizar el sistema eléctrico como medida de respuesta a esta tendencia. Esta tesis doctoral investiga uno de los principales mecanismos que proporcionan flexibilidad al sistema eléctrico: la gestión de la demanda vista tanto desde la perspectiva de la respuesta a la demanda como de la eficiencia energética. También se abordan los problemas de calidad de suministro entendidos como parte no despreciable de la eficiencia energética. Para ello, se han desplegado varias estrategias a un doble nivel. En el sector residencial, se ha desarrollado una estrategia basada en el control directo de cargas para los electrodomésticos inteligentes siguiendo un esquema de respuesta a la demanda con precios en tiempo real. Esta estrategia busca minimizar el coste diario de la energía en presencia de diversos recursos energéticos y electrodomésticos. Además, también se ha aplicado una técnica de espectro ensanchado para mitigar la distorsión de alta frecuencia derivada del uso de sistemas de iluminación con tecnología LED, empleados para la mejora de la eficiencia energética frente a las tecnologías convencionales. En el sector industrial, se ha desarrollado una estrategia de planificación de cargas para controlar el convertidor AC-AC de los hornos de fundición de vidrio con soporte eléctrico. El beneficio es doble: mientras que se contribuye a la flexibilidad de la demanda al eliminar los picos encontrados en los esquemas de control convencionales, también se reducen al mínimo los problemas de calidad de suministro relacionados con la emisión de subarmónicos. En cuanto a las tecnologías, esta tesis doctoral aporta soluciones, plataformas y dispositivos inteligentes para llevar a cabo estas estrategias: desde la aplicación del paradigma del internet de las cosas hasta el desarrollo de la electrónica necesaria y la implementación de estándares internacionales dentro de la industria energética
