    Designing sustainable cold chains for long-range food distribution: Energy-effective corridors on the Silk Road Belt

    Modern food production-distribution processes represent a critical stressor for the environment and for natural ecosystems. The rising flows of food across growing and consumption areas couple with the higher expectations of consumers for the quality of products and compel the intensive use of refrigerated rooms and transport means throughout the food supply chain. In order to aid the design of sustainable cold chains that incorporate such aspects, this paper proposes a mixed integer linear programming model to minimize the total energy consumption associated with the cold operations experienced by perishable products. This model is intended for food traders, logistics practitioners, retail managers, and importers collaboratively called to design and plan a cost and environmentally effective supply strategy, physical channels, and infrastructures for cold chains. The proposed model is validated with a case study inspired by the distribution of two example food products, namely fresh apples and ice cream, along the New Silk Road connecting Europe and China. The illustrated analysis investigates the effect of alternative routes and transport modes on the sustainability of the cold chain. It is found that the most energy-efficient route for ice cream is via rail over a northern route and, for apples, is via a southern maritime route, and, for these two routes, the ratios of the total energy consumed to the energy content of the food are 760 and 913, respectively. By incorporating the energy lost due to the food quality decay, the model identifies the optimal route to adopt in accordance with the shelf life and the conservation temperature of each product

    Methodology for the Assessment of Spatial Economic Impacts of Transport Projects and Policies

    In this study we develop an integrated econometric and CGE modelling framework for transport projects and transport policies at the European level by integrating network, regional economic and macro-economic impacts. The paper presents the formal structure of the integrated econometric and CGE modelling framework, explains the calibration and applies it to the policy evaluation. The effects of infrastructure investments are modelled by simulating trade cost changes in a comparative static analysis, using estimates of trade cost changes due to new infrastructure links, obtained from a transport network model. By performing a systematic and quantitative analysis of the spatial, network and socio-economic impacts of transport investments and policy and carrying out scenario simulations we improve the under-standing of the impact of transportation policies on short- and long-term spatial development in the EU.Transport Policy, Impact analysis, Spatial CGE Model

    High-speed rail safety analysis based on dual-weighted complex network

    This study uses a complex network model to analyze the causes of accidents in high-speed railway operations. By identifying the key factors that led to high-speed railway accidents, hidden safety hazards were discovered. This will help improve the operational safety of the U.S. high-speed rail line under construction. The analysis uses the regional high-speed railway network in Guangzhou, China as a case study, including the railway (including high-speed railway) accidents that occurred in the company\u27s jurisdiction from 2013 to 2017. With comparative analysis between general railways and high-speed railways, the changes of high-speed railway safety factors are explored. Data analysis results show that the main accident causes of high-speed railways and general railways have no significant differences in categories, Equipment and human factors are the most important categories of factors leading to accidents. However, there are obvious differences in specific accident factors. Which include the significant impact of driver staff on the safety of high-speed railways, and the safety of high-speed railways is highly sensitive to incidents. Another key factor is the stability of the equipment, especially the performance of the signal system is critical to the operation of high-speed rail. The underlying reasons reflected by these safety defect factors include: In the short term, a large number of equipment purchases and the construction of new railway lines will cause maintenance, driver, and mechanic pressures and staff shortages. The lack of training system leads to insufficient professional quality of maintenance employees and drivers. The proposed strategy includes enhancing the training organization within the operating company, and adjusting the high-speed railway construction and equipment procurement policies should be gentler in order to reduce the pressure on the system and improve the level of safety
