    Multi-objective genetic programming with partial sampling and its extension to many-objective

    This paper describes a technique on an optimization of tree-structure data by of multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, or multi-objective genetic programming. GP induces bloat of the tree structure as one of the major problem. The cause of bloat is that the tree structure obtained by the crossover operator grows bigger and bigger but its evaluation does not improve. To avoid the risk of bloat, a partial sampling operator is proposed as a mating operator. The size of the tree and a structural distance are introduced into the measure of the tree-structure data as the objective functions in addition to the index of the goodness of tree structure. GP is defined as a three-objective optimization problem. SD is also applied for the ranking of parent individuals instead to the crowding distance of the conventional NSGA-II. When the index of the goodness of tree-structure data is two or more, the number of objective functions in the above problem becomes four or more. We also propose an effective many-objective EA applicable to such the many-objective GP. We focus on NSGA-II based on Pareto partial dominance (NSGA-II-PPD). NSGA-II-PPD requires beforehand a combination list of the number of objective functions to be used for Pareto partial dominance (PPD). The contents of the combination list greatly influence the optimization result. We propose to schedule a parameter r meaning the subset size of objective functions for PPD and to eliminate individuals created by the mating having the same contents as the individual of the archive set

    Using Optimality Theory and Reference Points to Improve the Diversity and Convergence of a Fuzzy-Adaptive Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimizer

    Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) has received increasing attention from the evolutionary optimization research community in the last twenty years. PSO is a metaheuristic approach based on collective intelligence obtained by emulating the swarming behavior of bees. A number of multi-objective variants of the original PSO algorithm that extend its applicability to optimization problems with conflicting objectives have also been developed; these multi-objective PSO (MOPSO) algorithms demonstrate comparable performance to other state-of-the-art metaheuristics. The existence of multiple optimal solutions (Pareto-optimal set) in optimization problems with conflicting objectives is not the only challenge posed to an optimizer, as the latter needs to be able to identify and preserve a well-distributed set of solutions during the search of the decision variable space. Recent attempts by evolutionary optimization researchers to incorporate mathematical convergence conditions into genetic algorithm optimizers have led to the derivation of a point-wise proximity measure, which is based on the solution of the achievement scalarizing function (ASF) optimization problem with a complementary slackness condition that quantifies the violation of the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions of optimality. In this work, the aforementioned KKT proximity measure is incorporated into the original Adaptive Coevolutionary Multi-Objective Swarm Optimizer (ACMOPSO) in order to monitor the convergence of the sub-swarms towards the Pareto-optimal front and provide feedback to Mamdani-type fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) that are utilized for online adaptation of the algorithmic parameters. The proposed Fuzzy-Adaptive Multi-Objective Optimization Algorithm with the KKT proximity measure (FAMOPSOkkt) utilizes a set of reference points to cluster the computed nondominated solutions. These clusters interact with their corresponding sub-swarms to provide the swarm leaders and are also utilized to manage the external archive of nondominated solutions. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated on benchmark problems chosen from the multi-objective optimization literature and compared to the performance of state-of-the-art multi-objective optimization algorithms with similar features

    Evolutionary Algorithms in Engineering Design Optimization

    Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are population-based global optimizers, which, due to their characteristics, have allowed us to solve, in a straightforward way, many real world optimization problems in the last three decades, particularly in engineering fields. Their main advantages are the following: they do not require any requisite to the objective/fitness evaluation function (continuity, derivability, convexity, etc.); they are not limited by the appearance of discrete and/or mixed variables or by the requirement of uncertainty quantification in the search. Moreover, they can deal with more than one objective function simultaneously through the use of evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms. This set of advantages, and the continuously increased computing capability of modern computers, has enhanced their application in research and industry. From the application point of view, in this Special Issue, all engineering fields are welcomed, such as aerospace and aeronautical, biomedical, civil, chemical and materials science, electronic and telecommunications, energy and electrical, manufacturing, logistics and transportation, mechanical, naval architecture, reliability, robotics, structural, etc. Within the EA field, the integration of innovative and improvement aspects in the algorithms for solving real world engineering design problems, in the abovementioned application fields, are welcomed and encouraged, such as the following: parallel EAs, surrogate modelling, hybridization with other optimization techniques, multi-objective and many-objective optimization, etc

    An Approach Based on Particle Swarm Optimization for Inspection of Spacecraft Hulls by a Swarm of Miniaturized Robots

    The remoteness and hazards that are inherent to the operating environments of space infrastructures promote their need for automated robotic inspection. In particular, micrometeoroid and orbital debris impact and structural fatigue are common sources of damage to spacecraft hulls. Vibration sensing has been used to detect structural damage in spacecraft hulls as well as in structural health monitoring practices in industry by deploying static sensors. In this paper, we propose using a swarm of miniaturized vibration-sensing mobile robots realizing a network of mobile sensors. We present a distributed inspection algorithm based on the bio-inspired particle swarm optimization and evolutionary algorithm niching techniques to deliver the task of enumeration and localization of an a priori unknown number of vibration sources on a simplified 2.5D spacecraft surface. Our algorithm is deployed on a swarm of simulated cm-scale wheeled robots. These are guided in their inspection task by sensing vibrations arising from failure points on the surface which are detected by on-board accelerometers. We study three performance metrics: (1) proximity of the localized sources to the ground truth locations, (2) time to localize each source, and (3) time to finish the inspection task given a 75% inspection coverage threshold.     On the generation of environmentally efficient flight trajectories

    To achieve a sustainable future for air transport, the International Civil Aviation Organization has proposed goals for reductions in community noise impact, local air quality and climate impacting emissions. The goals are intended to be achieved through advances in engine design, aircraft design and through improvements in aircraft operational procedures. This thesis focuses on operational procedures, and considers how trajectory generation methods can be used to support flight and airspace planners in the planning and delivery of environmentally efficient flight operations. The problem of planning environmentally efficient trajectories is treated as an optimal control problem that is solved through the application of a direct method of trajectory optimisation combined with a stochastic Non Linear Programming (NLP) solver. Solving the problem in this manner allows decision makers to explore the relationships between how aircraft are operated and the consequent environmental impacts of the flights. In particular, this thesis describes a multi-objective optimisation methodology intended to support the planning of environmentally efficient climb and descent procedures. The method combines environmental, trajectory and NLP methods to generate Pareto fronts between several competing objectives. It is shown how Pareto front information can then be used to allow decision makers to make informed decisions about potential tradeoffs between different environmental goals. The method is demonstrated through its application to a number of real world, many objective procedure optimisation studies. The method is shown to support in depth analysis of the case study problems and was used to identify best balance procedure characteristics and procedures in an objective, data driven approach not achievable through existing methods. Driven by operator specific goals to reduce CO2 emissions, work in this thesis also looks at trajectory based flight planning of CO2 efficient trajectories. The results are used to better understand the impacts of ATM constraints and recommended procedures on both the energy management and fuel efficiency of flights. Further to this, it is shown how trajectory optimisation methods can be applied to the analysis of conventional assumptions on fuel efficient aircraft operations. While the work within is intended to be directly relevant to the current air traffic management system, both consideration and discussion is given over to the evolution and continued relevance of the work to the Single European Sky trajectory based concept of operation

    Smart Urban Water Networks

    This book presents the paper form of the Special Issue (SI) on Smart Urban Water Networks. The number and topics of the papers in the SI confirm the growing interest of operators and researchers for the new paradigm of smart networks, as part of the more general smart city. The SI showed that digital information and communication technology (ICT), with the implementation of smart meters and other digital devices, can significantly improve the modelling and the management of urban water networks, contributing to a radical transformation of the traditional paradigm of water utilities. The paper collection in this SI includes different crucial topics such as the reliability, resilience, and performance of water networks, innovative demand management, and the novel challenge of real-time control and operation, along with their implications for cyber-security. The SI collected fourteen papers that provide a wide perspective of solutions, trends, and challenges in the contest of smart urban water networks. Some solutions have already been implemented in pilot sites (i.e., for water network partitioning, cyber-security, and water demand disaggregation and forecasting), while further investigations are required for other methods, e.g., the data-driven approaches for real time control. In all cases, a new deal between academia, industry, and governments must be embraced to start the new era of smart urban water systems
