STEPS - an approach for human mobility modeling

    Get PDF
In this paper we introduce Spatio-TEmporal Parametric Stepping (STEPS) - a simple parametric mobility model which can cover a large spectrum of human mobility patterns. STEPS makes abstraction of spatio-temporal preferences in human mobility by using a power law to rule the nodes movement. Nodes in STEPS have preferential attachment to favorite locations where they spend most of their time. Via simulations, we show that STEPS is able, not only to express the peer to peer properties such as inter-ontact/contact time and to reflect accurately realistic routing performance, but also to express the structural properties of the underlying interaction graph such as small-world phenomenon. Moreover, STEPS is easy to implement, exible to configure and also theoretically tractable

On the Dynamics of Human Proximity for Data Diffusion in Ad-Hoc Networks

We report on a data-driven investigation aimed at understanding the dynamics of message spreading in a real-world dynamical network of human proximity. We use data collected by means of a proximity-sensing network of wearable sensors that we deployed at three different social gatherings, simultaneously involving several hundred individuals. We simulate a message spreading process over the recorded proximity network, focusing on both the topological and the temporal properties. We show that by using an appropriate technique to deal with the temporal heterogeneity of proximity events, a universal statistical pattern emerges for the delivery times of messages, robust across all the data sets. Our results are useful to set constraints for generic processes of data dissemination, as well as to validate established models of human mobility and proximity that are frequently used to simulate realistic behaviors.Comment: A. Opportunistic Networks: Present Scenario- A Mirror Review

    Get PDF
Opportunistic Network is form of Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) and regarded as extension to Mobile Ad Hoc Network. OPPNETS are designed to operate especially in those environments which are surrounded by various issues like- High Error Rate, Intermittent Connectivity, High Delay and no defined route between source to destination node. OPPNETS works on the principle of “Store-and-Forward” mechanism as intermediate nodes perform the task of routing from node to node. The intermediate nodes store the messages in their memory until the suitable node is not located in communication range to transfer the message to the destination. OPPNETs suffer from various issues like High Delay, Energy Efficiency of Nodes, Security, High Error Rate and High Latency. The aim of this research paper is to overview various routing protocols available till date for OPPNETs and classify the protocols in terms of their performance. The paper also gives quick review of various Mobility Models and Simulation tools available for OPPNETs simulation

Social relationship based routing for delay tolerant Bluetooth-enabled PSN communications

PhDOpportunistic networking is a concept derived from the mobile ad hoc networking in which devices have no prior knowledge of routes to the intended destinations. Content dissemination in opportunistic networks thus is carried out in a store and forward fashion. Opportunistic routing poses distinct challenges compared to the traditional networks such as Internet and mobile ad hoc networks where nodes have prior knowledge of the routes to the intended destinations. Information dissemination in opportunistic networks requires dealing with intermittent connectivity, variable delays, short connection durations and dynamic topology. Addressing these challenges becomes a significant motivation for developing novel applications and protocols for information dissemination in opportunistic networks. This research looks at opportunistic networking, specifically at networks composed of mobile devices or, pocket switched networks. Mobile devices are now accepted as an integral part of society and are often equipped with Bluetooth capabilities that allow for opportunistic information sharing between devices. The ad hoc nature of opportunistic networks means nodes have no advance routing knowledge and this is key challenge. Human social relationships are based on certain patterns that can be exploited to make opportunistic routing decisions. Targeting nodes that evidence high popularity or high influence can enable more efficient content dissemination. Based on this observation, a novel impact based neighbourhood algorithm called Lobby Influence is presented. The algorithm is tested against two previously proposed algorithms and proves better in terms of message delivery and delay. Moreover, unlike other social based algorithms, which have a tendency to concentrate traffic through their identified routing nodes, the new algorithm provides a fairer load distribution, thus alleviating the tendency to saturate individual nodes

Implementation of Group-Based Human Movement Model in Opportunistic Network

    Get PDF
As an instance of a distributed computing system, opportunistic networks facilitate message dissemination in a store-carry-forward manner. In this setting, the mobile devices are communicating in opportunistic contacts as they move across the network areas. However, the movement of these mobile devices is exclusively reliant on the mobility of their human owner, thereby limiting the likelihood of contact. The current state of the art typically simulates human movement based on randomness, which is unsuitable for representing how people move in groups. Therefore, this paper proposes an implementation of a group-based human mobility model to simulate device-to-device communication in opportunistic networks. In this model, individuals are able to move as a set within a group and have the ability to join and leave the group dynamically We built the model in BonnMotion and subsequently implemented it in an opportunistic environment simulator, ONE Simulator. To evaluate the proposed model, we compared them to the random-based model as a benchmark. Subsequently, we assess the impact of the movement model on two major areas of network performance: message delivery performance and resource utilization, such as nodes’ energy consumption. We are concerned about these aspects since the mobile agents have limited resources yet are expected to achieve a high rate of message delivery as well. The simulation results show that our model outperformed the random-based model in terms of the number of successfully delivered messages and average delay. However, the number of message replications and the energy consumption is fairly higher than those of the benchmarks
