Challenges of open innovation: the paradox of firm investment in open-source software
Open innovation is a powerful framework encompassing the generation, capture, and employment of intellectual property at the firm level. We identify three fundamental challenges for firms in applying the concept of open innovation: finding creative ways to exploit internal innovation, incorporating external innovation into internal development, and motivating outsiders to supply an ongoing stream of external innovations. This latter challenge involves a paradox, why would firms spend money on R&D efforts if the results of these efforts are available to rival firms? To explore these challenges, we examine the activity of firms in opensource software to support their innovation strategies. Firms involved in open-source software often make investments that will be shared with real and potential rivals. We identify four strategies firms employ – pooled R&D/product development, spinouts, selling complements and attracting donated complements – and discuss how they address the three key challenges of open innovation. We conclude with suggestions for how similar strategies may apply in other industries and offer some possible avenues for future research on open innovation
The Disappearing Act of KH 15D: Photometric Results from 1995 to 2004
We present results from the most recent (2002-2004) observing campaigns of
the eclipsing system KH 15D, in addition to re-reduced data obtained at Van
Vleck Observatory (VVO) between 1995 and 2000. Phasing nine years of
photometric data shows substantial evolution in the width and depth of the
eclipses. The most recent data indicate that the eclipses are now approximately
24 days in length, or half the orbital period. These results are interpreted
and discussed in the context of the recent models for this system put forward
by Winn et al. and Chiang & Murray-Clay. A periodogram of the entire data set
yields a highly significant peak at 48.37 +/- 0.01 days, which is in accord
with the spectroscopic period of 48.38 +/- 0.01 days determined by Johnson et
al. Another significant peak, at 9.6 days, was found in the periodogram of the
out-of-eclipse data at two different epochs. We interpret this as the rotation
period of the visible star and argue that it may be tidally locked in
pseudosynchronism with its orbital motion. If so, application of Hut's theory
implies that the eccentricity of the orbit is e = 0.65 +/- 0.01. Analysis of
the UVES/VLT spectra obtained by Hamilton et al. shows that the v sin(i) of the
visible star in this system is 6.9 +/- 0.3 km/sec. Using this value of v sin(i)
and the measured rotation period of the star, we calculate the lower limit on
the radius to be R = (1.3 +/- 0.1), R_Sun, which concurs with the value
obtained by Hamilton et al. from its luminosity and effective temperature. Here
we assume that i = 90 degrees since it is likely that the spin and orbital

Development Challenges of Secondary and Small Airports in California, Research Report 11-21
This study investigates the development of secondary and smaller airports in California. Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) business is growing at these airports because they offer reduced operating costs, and they have adequate capacity to help LCCs avoid battling with incumbent airlines at the large hubs for limited resources, such as gates. However, increased LCC aircraft operations at the secondary airports have led to significant noise impacts on the surrounding communities and this has been a challenge for the secondary airport operators. They have imposed operational curfews to limit the noise impacts, but this approach constrains the resident airlines that want to increase their traffic. As a result, some LCCs have begun to initiate flights out of the large hubs. Statistics from this study show that the LCCs have replaced the legacy airlines as the dominant air provider in the state. With their growing dominance, the LCCs will become more attractive to the large hub airports, and the secondary airports will face increased competition in retaining them. To retain those LCCs, the secondary airports must better understand how LCCs make investment decisions related to airport development. At the same time, they must better educate the LCCs about their airport needs
Putative risk alleles for LATE-NC with hippocampal sclerosis in population-representative autopsy cohorts
Limbic-predominant age-related TAR-DNA-binding protein-43 (TDP-43) encephalopathy with hippocampal sclerosis pathology (LATE-NC + HS) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by severe hippocampal CA1 neuron loss and TDP-43-pathology, leading to cognitive dysfunction and dementia. Polymorphisms in GRN, TMEM106B and ABCC9 are proposed as LATE-NC + HS risk factors in brain bank collections. To replicate these results in independent population-representative cohorts, hippocampal sections from brains donated to three such studies (Cambridge City over 75-Cohort [CC75C], Cognitive Function and Ageing Study [CFAS], and Vantaa 85+ Study) were stained with hematoxylin-eosin (n = 744) and anti-pTDP-43 (n = 713), and evaluated for LATE-NC + HS and TDP-43 pathology. Single nucleotide polymorphism genotypes in GRN rs5848, TMEM106B rs1990622 and ABCC9 rs704178 were determined. LATE-NC + HS (n = 58) was significantly associated with the GRN rs5848 genotype (chi(2)(2) = 20.61, P <0.001) and T-allele (chi(2)(1) = 21.04, P <0.001), and TMEM106B rs1990622 genotype (Fisher's exact test, P <0.001) and A-allele (chi(2)(1) = 25.75, P <0.001). No differences in ABCC9 rs704178 genotype or allele frequency were found between LATE-NC + HS and non-LATE-NC + HS neuropathology cases. Dentate gyrus TDP-43 pathology associated with GRN and TMEM106B variations, but the association with TMEM106B nullified when LATE-NC + HS cases were excluded. Our results indicate that GRN and TMEM106B are associated with severe loss of CA1 neurons in the aging brain, while ABCC9 was not confirmed as a genetic risk factor for LATE-NC + HS. The association between TMEM106B and LATE-NC + HS may be independent of dentate TDP-43 pathology.Peer reviewe

An effective new public matching funds system in which citizens direct the distribution of public funds to candidates would fundamentally change the way our campaigns are financed. The system would decrease the opportunities for corruption of federal officeholders and government decisions, and provide candidates with an alternative means for financing their elections without being obligated to special interest funders. Most importantly, the system would restore citizens to their rightful pre-eminent place in our democracy
Bernard Yarnton Mills 1920-2011
Bernie Mills is remembered globally as an influential pioneer in the evolving
field of radio astronomy. His contributions with the 'Mills Cross' at the CSIRO
Division of Radiophysics and later at the University of Sydney's School of
Physics and the development of the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope
(MOST) were widely recognised as astronomy evolved in the years 1948-1985 and
radio astronomy changed the viewpoint of the astronomer as a host of new
objects were discovered
A History and Informal Assessment of the Slacker Astronomy Podcast
Slacker Astronomy is a weekly podcast that covers a recent astronomical news
event or discovery. The show has a unique style consisting of irreverent,
over-the-top humor combined with a healthy dose of hard science. According to
our demographic analysis, the combination of this style and the unique
podcasting distribution mechanism allows the show to reach audiences younger
and busier than those reached via traditional channels. We report on the
successes and challenges of the first year of the show, and provide an informal
assessment of its role as a source for astronomical news and concepts for its
approximately 15,500 weekly listeners.Comment: 14 page
