    Observer-biased bearing condition monitoring: from fault detection to multi-fault classification

    Bearings are simultaneously a fundamental component and one of the principal causes of failure in rotary machinery. The work focuses on the employment of fuzzy clustering for bearing condition monitoring, i.e., fault detection and classification. The output of a clustering algorithm is a data partition (a set of clusters) which is merely a hypothesis on the structure of the data. This hypothesis requires validation by domain experts. In general, clustering algorithms allow a limited usage of domain knowledge on the cluster formation process. In this study, a novel method allowing for interactive clustering in bearing fault diagnosis is proposed. The method resorts to shrinkage to generalize an otherwise unbiased clustering algorithm into a biased one. In this way, the method provides a natural and intuitive way to control the cluster formation process, allowing for the employment of domain knowledge to guiding it. The domain expert can select a desirable level of granularity ranging from fault detection to classification of a variable number of faults and can select a specific region of the feature space for detailed analysis. Moreover, experimental results under realistic conditions show that the adopted algorithm outperforms the corresponding unbiased algorithm (fuzzy c-means) which is being widely used in this type of problems.     Sampled-data fuzzy controller for continuous nonlinear systems

    The sampled-data fuzzy control of nonlinear systems is presented. The consequents of the fuzzy controller rules are linear sampled-data sub-controllers. As a result, the fuzzy controller is a weighted sum of some linear sampled-data sub-controllers that can be implemented by a microcontroller or a digital computer to lower the implementation cost. Consequently, a hybrid fuzzy controller consisting of continuous-time grades of memberships and discrete-time sub-controller is obtained. The system stability of the fuzzy control system is investigated on the basis of Lyapunov-based approach. The sampling activity introduces discontinuity to complicate the system dynamics and make the stability analysis difficult. The proposed fuzzy controller exhibits a favourable property to alleviate the conservativeness of the stability analysis. Furthermore, linear matrix inequality-based performance conditions are derived to guarantee the system performance of the fuzzy control system.     A survey on gain-scheduled control and filtering for parameter-varying systems

First of all, we recall several important algorithms suitable for gain-scheduling method including gain-scheduled proportional-integral derivative (PID) control, H 2, H ∞ and mixed H 2 / H ∞ gain-scheduling methods as well as fuzzy gain-scheduling techniques. Secondly, various important parameter-varying system models are reviewed, for which gain-scheduled control and filtering issues are usually dealt with. In particular, in view of the randomly occurring phenomena with time-varying probability distributions, some results of our recent work based on the probability-dependent gain-scheduling methods are reviewed. Furthermore, some latest progress in this area is discussed.     Robust passivity and passification of stochastic fuzzy time-delay systems

    The official published version can be obtained from the link below.In this paper, the passivity and passification problems are investigated for a class of uncertain stochastic fuzzy systems with time-varying delays. The fuzzy system is based on the Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) model that is often used to represent the complex nonlinear systems in terms of fuzzy sets and fuzzy reasoning. To reflect more realistic dynamical behaviors of the system, both the parameter uncertainties and the stochastic disturbances are considered, where the parameter uncertainties enter into all the system matrices and the stochastic disturbances are given in the form of a Brownian motion. We first propose the definition of robust passivity in the sense of expectation. Then, by utilizing the Lyapunov functional method, the Itô differential rule and the matrix analysis techniques, we establish several sufficient criteria such that, for all admissible parameter uncertainties and stochastic disturbances, the closed-loop stochastic fuzzy time-delay system is robustly passive in the sense of expectation. The derived criteria, which are either delay-independent or delay-dependent, are expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) that can be easily checked by using the standard numerical software.     Complexity, BioComplexity, the Connectionist Conjecture and Ontology of Complexity\ud

    This paper develops and integrates major ideas and concepts on complexity and biocomplexity - the connectionist conjecture, universal ontology of complexity, irreducible complexity of totality & inherent randomness, perpetual evolution of information, emergence of criticality and equivalence of symmetry & complexity. This paper introduces the Connectionist Conjecture which states that the one and only representation of Totality is the connectionist one i.e. in terms of nodes and edges. This paper also introduces an idea of Universal Ontology of Complexity and develops concepts in that direction. The paper also develops ideas and concepts on the perpetual evolution of information, irreducibility and computability of totality, all in the context of the Connectionist Conjecture. The paper indicates that the control and communication are the prime functionals that are responsible for the symmetry and complexity of complex phenomenon. The paper takes the stand that the phenomenon of life (including its evolution) is probably the nearest to what we can describe with the term “complexity”. The paper also assumes that signaling and communication within the living world and of the living world with the environment creates the connectionist structure of the biocomplexity. With life and its evolution as the substrate, the paper develops ideas towards the ontology of complexity. The paper introduces new complexity theoretic interpretations of fundamental biomolecular parameters. The paper also develops ideas on the methodology to determine the complexity of “true” complex phenomena.\u

    Variance-constrained dissipative observer-based control for a class of nonlinear stochastic systems with degraded measurements

    The official published version of the article can be obtained from the link below.This paper is concerned with the variance-constrained dissipative control problem for a class of stochastic nonlinear systems with multiple degraded measurements, where the degraded probability for each sensor is governed by an individual random variable satisfying a certain probabilistic distribution over a given interval. The purpose of the problem is to design an observer-based controller such that, for all possible degraded measurements, the closed-loop system is exponentially mean-square stable and strictly dissipative, while the individual steady-state variance is not more than the pre-specified upper bound constraints. A general framework is established so that the required exponential mean-square stability, dissipativity as well as the variance constraints can be easily enforced. A sufficient condition is given for the solvability of the addressed multiobjective control problem, and the desired observer and controller gains are characterized in terms of the solution to a convex optimization problem that can be easily solved by using the semi-definite programming method.     Observer synthesis for the T-S fuzzy system with uncertainty and output disturbance

    [[abstract]]The paper proposes a novel fuzzy observer synthesis for the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system with uncertainty and output disturbance. First, an augmented fuzzy model is built by integrating the system state and the output disturbance into a new variable. Then, based on Lyapunov theory and LMIs tools, two main theorems are derived for particular and general cases of fuzzy systems, respectively. In each main theorem, three key conditions are proposed, under which the fuzzy observer is synthesized to estimate the system state and the output disturbance simultaneously. According to the main theorems, a methodical procedure for the fuzzy observer synthesis is also provided.     AI-based Diagnostics for Fault Detection and Isolation in Process Equipment Service

    Recent industry requires efficient fault discovering and isolation solutions in process equipment service. This problem is a real-world problem of typically ill-defined systems, hard to model, with large-scale solution spaces. Design of precise models is impractical, too expensive, or often non-existent. Support service of equipment requires generating models that can analyze the equipment data, interpreting the past behavior and predicting the future one. These problems pose a challenge to traditional modeling techniques and represent a great opportunity for the application of AI-based methodologies, which enable us to deal with imprecise, uncertain data and incomplete domain knowledge typically encountered in real-world applications. In this paper the state of the art, theoretical background of conventional and AI-based techniques in support of service tasks and illustration of some applications to process equipment service on bio-ethanol production process are shortly described
