Indoor wireless communications and applications
Chapter 3 addresses challenges in radio link and system design in indoor scenarios. Given the fact that most human activities take place in indoor environments, the need for supporting ubiquitous indoor data connectivity and location/tracking service becomes even more important than in the previous decades. Specific technical challenges addressed in this section are(i), modelling complex indoor radio channels for effective antenna deployment, (ii), potential of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radios for supporting higher data rates, and (iii), feasible indoor localisation and tracking techniques, which are summarised in three dedicated sections of this chapter
Towards a Realistic Assessment of Multiple Antenna HCNs: Residual Additive Transceiver Hardware Impairments and Channel Aging
Given the critical dependence of broadcast channels by the accuracy of
channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), we develop a general
downlink model with zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, applied in realistic
heterogeneous cellular systems with multiple antenna base stations (BSs).
Specifically, we take into consideration imperfect CSIT due to pilot
contamination, channel aging due to users relative movement, and unavoidable
residual additive transceiver hardware impairments (RATHIs). Assuming that the
BSs are Poisson distributed, the main contributions focus on the derivations of
the upper bound of the coverage probability and the achievable user rate for
this general model. We show that both the coverage probability and the user
rate are dependent on the imperfect CSIT and RATHIs. More concretely, we
quantify the resultant performance loss of the network due to these effects. We
depict that the uplink RATHIs have equal impact, but the downlink transmit BS
distortion has a greater impact than the receive hardware impairment of the
user. Thus, the transmit BS hardware should be of better quality than user's
receive hardware. Furthermore, we characterise both the coverage probability
and user rate in terms of the time variation of the channel. It is shown that
both of them decrease with increasing user mobility, but after a specific value
of the normalised Doppler shift, they increase again. Actually, the time
variation, following the Jakes autocorrelation function, mirrors this effect on
coverage probability and user rate. Finally, we consider space division
multiple access (SDMA), single user beamforming (SU-BF), and baseline
single-input single-output (SISO) transmission. A comparison among these
schemes reveals that the coverage by means of SU-BF outperforms SDMA in terms

Towards Very Large Aperture Massive MIMO: a measurement based study
Massive MIMO is a new technique for wireless communications that claims to
offer very high system throughput and energy efficiency in multi-user
scenarios. The cost is to add a very large number of antennas at the base
station. Theoretical research has probed these benefits, but very few
measurements have showed the potential of Massive MIMO in practice. We
investigate the properties of measured Massive MIMO channels in a large indoor
venue. We describe a measurement campaign using 3 arrays having different shape
and aperture, with 64 antennas and 8 users with 2 antennas each. We focus on
the impact of the array aperture which is the main limiting factor in the
degrees of freedom available in the multiple antenna channel. We find that
performance is improved as the aperture increases, with an impact mostly
visible in crowded scenarios where the users are closely spaced. We also test
MIMO capability within a same user device with user proximity effect. We see a
good channel resolvability with confirmation of the strong effect of the user
hand grip. At last, we highlight that propagation conditions where
line-of-sight is dominant can be favorable
Performance analysis of massive multiple input multiple output for high speed railway
This paper analytically reviews the performance of massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system for communication in highly mobility scenarios like high speed Railways. As popularity of high speed train increasing day by day, high data rate wireless communication system for high speed train is extremely required. 5G wireless communication systems must be designed to meet the requirement of high speed broadband services at speed of around 500 km/h, which is the expected speed achievable by HSR systems, at a data rate of 180 Mbps or higher. Significant challenges of high mobility communications are fast time-varying fading, channel estimation errors, doppler diversity, carrier frequency offset, inter carrier interference, high penetration loss and fast and frequent handovers. Therefore, crucial requirement to design high mobility communication channel models or systems prevails. Recently, massive MIMO techniques have been proposed to significantly improve the performance of wireless networks for upcoming 5G technology. Massive MIMO provide high throughput and high energy efficiency in wireless communication channel. In this paper, key findings, challenges and requirements to provide high speed wireless communication onboard the high speed train is pointed out after thorough literature review. In last, future research scope to bridge the research gap by designing efficient channel model by using massive MIMO and other optimization method is mentioned
Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges
With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing
number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed
and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected.
Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime
satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency
and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base
stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks
using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services.
Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs.
Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient
maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated
electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS
sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications,
conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be
tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the
demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key
technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage,
and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an
environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to
be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and
atmosphere conditions, are also discussed
