In recent years, the World Wide Web has become a major platform for software applications. Web-based information systems have been involved in many areas of our everyday life, such as education, entertainment, business, manufacturing, communication, etc. As web-based systems are usually distributed, multimedia, interactive and cooperative, and their production processes usually follow ad-hoc approaches, the quality of web-based systems has become a major concern. Existing quality models and metrics do not fully satisfy the needs of quality management of Web-based systems. This study has applied and adapted software quality engineering methods and principles to address the following issues, a quality modeling method for derivation of quality models of Web-based information systems; and the development, implementation and validation of quality metrics of key quality attributes of Web-based information systems, which include navigability and timeliness. The quality modeling method proposed in this study has the following strengths. It is more objective and rigorous than existing approaches. The quality analysis can be conducted in the early stage of system life cycle on the design. It is easy to use and can provide insight into the improvement of the design of systems. Results of case studies demonstrated that the quality modeling method is applicable and practical. Practitioners can use the modeling method to develop their own quality models. This study is amongst the first comprehensive attempts to develop quality measurement for Web-based information systems. First, it identified the relationship between website structural complexity and navigability. Quality metrics of navigability were defined, investigated and implemented. Empirical studies were conducted to evaluate the metrics. Second, this study investigated website timeliness and attempted to find direct and indirect measures for the quality attribute. Empirical studies for validating such metrics were also conducted. This study also suggests four areas of future research that may be fruitful

A methodological framework for the analysis and design of Adaptive Web-based Information Systems

    Get PDF
Due to the growing popularity and complexity of the Web, designing a web site is becoming a complex and difficult process, that needs to be supported by more powerful Web engineering methods. In this paper, we present our ongoing research on defining a methodological framework for the analysis and design of Adaptive Web-based Information Systems (AWIS). Adaptive systems use knowledge about a particular user, represented in the user model, to adapt their information , organization, and presentation to that user. Our approach is driven by an elicited set of High Level Users Goals, which allows intended users to come closer to satisfying their specific needs and preferences. It is composed of a number of process step guidelines along with their respective product models, that enables the Web designer to model his/her AWIS at different levels of abstraction. Thus, an AWIS is modeled at the conceptual level as modular adaptive views over the Information Domain, the conceptual schemas are then transformed into a logical level representation, which enables the actual implementation of the AWIS

Panel 6 What\u27s So Different about the World Wide Web Anyway?

Many predict a shift in the way organizations function as the World Wide Web becomes the predominant way that people gain access to computer applications and information. As organizations graft Web interfaces to their legacy systems and conceive of entire new information systems that take advantage of the Web infrastructure, a new field called Web Information Systems (WIS) is emerging. There is a clear difference between a set of Web pages and a WIS. The WIS supports work, and is usually tightly integrated with other non-Web-based information systems such as a databases and transaction processing systems. But, what is so different about WIS from other distributed information systems? And for that matter, how do WIS really differ from more traditional systems? Don’t WIS developers face the same needs for systematic analysis and design, robust implemen- tations, economic return on investment and competitive advantage, etc.? Are the users of WIS that much different from other information system users? How much do the lessons we’ve learned over the last several decades of IS research and development apply to the Web? This panel will explore the young field of Web Information Systems, examining issues in Web development and usage contrasted with our experiences with traditional systems. Our goal will be to come away with a better understanding of the Web, Web Information Systems, and traditional information systems
