Darwinism, probability and complexity : market-based organizational transformation and change explained through the theories of evolution
The study of transformation and change is one of the most important areas of social science research. This paper synthesizes and critically reviews the emerging traditions in the study of change dynamics. Three mainstream theories of evolution are introduced to explain change: the Darwinian concept of survival of the fittest, the Probability model and the Complexity approach. The literature review provides a basis for development of research questions that search for a more comprehensive understanding of organizational change. The paper concludes by arguing for the development of a complementary research tradition, which combines an evolutionary and organizational analysis of transformation and change
When one model is not enough: Combining epistemic tools in systems biology
In recent years, the philosophical focus of the modeling literature has shifted from
descriptions of general properties of models to an interest in different model functions. It has
been argued that the diversity of models and their correspondingly different epistemic goals
are important for developing intelligible scientific theories (Levins, 2006; Leonelli, 2007).
However, more knowledge is needed on how a combination of different epistemic means can
generate and stabilize new entities in science. This paper will draw on Rheinberger’s
practice-oriented account of knowledge production. The conceptual repertoire of
Rheinberger’s historical epistemology offers important insights for an analysis of the
modelling practice. I illustrate this with a case study on network modeling in systems biology
where engineering approaches are applied to the study of biological systems. I shall argue
that the use of multiple means of representations is an essential part of the dynamic of
knowledge generation. It is because of – rather than in spite of – the diversity of constraints
of different models that the interlocking use of different epistemic means creates a potential
for knowledge production
Exploring design principles of biological and living building envelopes:What can we learn from plant cell walls?
A number of innovations in building envelope technologies have been implemented recently, for example, to improve insulation and air tightness to reduce energy consumption. However, growing concern over the embodied energy and carbon as well as resource depletion, is beginning to impact on the design and implementation of existing and novel building envelope technologies. Biomimicry is proposed as one approach to create buildings which are resilient to a changing climate, embedded in wider ecological systems, energy efficient and waste free. However, the diversity of form and function in biological organisms and therefore potential applications for biomimicry, requires a holistic approach spanning biology, materials science and architecture. It is considered timely to re-examine opportunities to learn from nature, including in the light of recent understanding of how plant form and function are determined at the cellular levels. Design thinking support: information systems versus reasoning
Numerous attempts have been made to conceive and implement appropriate information systems to support architectural designers in their creative design thinking processes. These information systems aim at providing support in very diverse ways: enabling designers to make diverse kinds of visual representations of a design, enabling them to make complex calculations and simulations which take into account numerous relevant parameters in the design context, providing them with loads of information and knowledge from all over the world, and so forth. Notwithstanding the continued efforts to develop these information systems, they still fail to provide essential support in the core creative activities of architectural designers. In order to understand why an appropriately effective support from information systems is so hard to realize, we started to look into the nature of design thinking and on how reasoning processes are at play in this design thinking. This investigation suggests that creative designing rests on a cyclic combination of abductive, deductive and inductive reasoning processes. Because traditional information systems typically target only one of these reasoning processes at a time, this could explain the limited applicability and usefulness of these systems. As research in information technology is increasingly targeting the combination of these reasoning modes, improvements may be within reach for design thinking support by information systems
Industrial Relations System Transformation
This paper analyzes the concept of “transformation” that many allege has occurred recently in a wide variety of national industrial relations systems. After a summary of the debate, with particular reference to the contentious case of Germany, the authors attempt to develop a definition of industrial relations system transformation on the basis of biological analogies and, in particular, the “punctuated equilibrium” theory. They examine the cases of the United States, Sweden, South Africa, and New Zealand, and conclude that the application of the biological frameworks raises a set of fundamental questions that must be addressed in order for the debate over the existence of industrial relations transformation to move forward
Evaluating Biological Systems for Their Potential in Engineering Design
A team of biologists, engineers, and cognitive scientists has been working together for the past five years, teaching an upper level undergraduate course in biologically inspired design where half the class of forty students are biologists and other physical scientists and the other half are engineers (mechanical, materials, industrial, others). From this experience, we provide insights on how to teach students to evaluate biological systems for their potential in engineering design. We have found that at first, students are not familiar with developing their own question since, in most engineering design classes, the problem is prescribed along with clients who would like to have them solved. In our class, we challenge the students with defining a significant problem. The students with common challenges then are placed together in an interdisciplinary team with at least one biologist and one engineer. A detailed problem decomposition follows, identifying the hierarchy of systems and clearly specifying functions. This is essential for the next step of analogical reasoning. Analogical reasoning as applied to BID is a process of matching biological functions to engineered functions and transferring functions and mechanisms from biology to engineering. For each desired function, students may ask: what mechanisms does nature use for achieving the function? This question guides the exploration of the wealth of knowledge in biology by asking them to clearly define the function of interest, then search for natural processes that perform this function. To expand on this search space, the students next make a list of the same function performed by other organisms for a comparative analysis to deepen their understanding and extract key biological principles. Students then invert the function and identify keywords to search. They also must refer to general biology books to identify key organisms that perform the function the best (and hence are included in textbooks). Using databases, such as the Web of Science functions, they can try to select the ‘best’ articles. If one is lucky, a single biological system may serve as a near perfect match to lead to a successful BID. However, some of the most innovative designs are built from more than one biological system, something that evolution cannot always do. We call these compound analogies. At this point, the design iteration can take on a different approach, namely solution based rather than problem based. Here, the team takes a natural system and asks, how can this biological principle improve an engineered design or function. These twin processes: solution vs problem-based approaches both have led to innovative and creative design concepts in this interdisciplinary class. Receptor uptake arrays for vitamin B12, siderophores and glycans shape bacterial communities
Molecular variants of vitamin B12, siderophores and glycans occur. To take up
variant forms, bacteria may express an array of receptors. The gut microbe
Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron has three different receptors to take up variants
of vitamin B12 and 88 receptors to take up various glycans. The design of
receptor arrays reflects key processes that shape cellular evolution.
Competition may focus each species on a subset of the available nutrient
diversity. Some gut bacteria can take up only a narrow range of carbohydrates,
whereas species such as B.~thetaiotaomicron can digest many different complex
glycans. Comparison of different nutrients, habitats, and genomes provide
opportunity to test hypotheses about the breadth of receptor arrays. Another
important process concerns fluctuations in nutrient availability. Such
fluctuations enhance the value of cellular sensors, which gain information
about environmental availability and adjust receptor deployment. Bacteria often
adjust receptor expression in response to fluctuations of particular
carbohydrate food sources. Some species may adjust expression of uptake
receptors for specific siderophores. How do cells use sensor information to
control the response to fluctuations? That question about regulatory wiring
relates to problems that arise in control theory and artificial intelligence.
Control theory clarifies how to analyze environmental fluctuations in relation
to the design of sensors and response systems. Recent advances in deep learning
studies of artificial intelligence focus on the architecture of regulatory
wiring and the ways in which complex control networks represent and classify
environmental states. I emphasize the similar design problems that arise in
cellular evolution, control theory, and artificial intelligence. I connect
those broad concepts to testable hypotheses for bacterial uptake of B12,
