Purpose–The purpose of this chapter is to give an overview of the context of Web search and search engine-related research, as well as to introduce the reader to the sections and chapters of the book. Methodology/approach–We review literature dealing with various aspects of search engines, with special emphasis on emerging areas of Web searching, search engine evaluation going beyond traditional methods, and new perspectives on Webs earching. Findings–The approaches to studying Web search engines are manifold. Given the importance of Web search engines for knowledge acquisition, research from different perspectives needs to be integrated into a more cohesive perspective. Researchlimitations/implications–The chapter suggests a basis for research in the field and also introduces further research directions. Implementation and evaluation of a quality-based search engine

In this paper, an approach for the implementation of a quality-based Web search engine is proposed. Quality retrieval is introduced and an overview on previous efforts to implement such a service is given. Machine learning approaches are identified as the most promising methods to determine the quality of Web pages. Features for the most appropriate characterization of Web pages are determined. A quality model is developed based on human judgments. This model is integrated into a meta search engine which assesses the quality of all results at run time. The evaluation results show that quality based ranking does lead to better results concerning the perceived quality of Web pages presented in the result set. The quality models are exploited to identify potentially important features and characteristics for the quality of Web pages

Economic evidence for the prevention and treatment of atopic eczema: a protocol for a systematic review

Background: Eczema, synonymous with atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin disease that has a similar impact on health-related quality of life as other chronic diseases. The proposed research aims to provide a comprehensive systematic assessment of the economic evidence base available to inform economic modelling and decision making on interventions to prevent and treat eczema at any stage of the life course. Whilst the Global Resource of Eczema Trials (GREAT) database collects together the effectiveness evidence for eczema there is currently no such systematic resource on the economics of eczema. It is important to gain an overview of the current state of the art of economic methods in the field of eczema in order to strengthen the economic evidence base further. Methods/design: The proposed study is a systematic review of the economic evidence surrounding interventions for the prevention and treatment of eczema. Relevant search terms will be used to search MEDLINE, EMBASE, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, NHS Economic Evaluation Database, Health Technology Assessment, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Econ Lit, Scopus, Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Registry and Web of Science in order to identify relevant evidence. To be eligible for inclusion studies will be primary empirical studies evaluating the cost, utility or full economic evaluation of interventions for preventing or treating eczema. Two reviewers will independently assess studies for eligibility and perform data abstraction. Evidence tables will be produced presenting details of study characteristics, costing methods, outcome methods and quality assessment. The methodological quality of studies will be assessed using accepted checklists. Discussion: The systematic review is being undertaken to identify the type of economic evidence available, summarise the results of the available economic evidence and critically appraise the quality of economic evidence currently available to inform future economic modelling and resource allocation decisions about interventions to prevent or treat eczema. Assessment methods and tools to evaluate postgraduate critical care nursing students' competence in clinical placement: An integrative review

Aim To provide an overview of assessment methods and tools to evaluate postgraduate critical care nursing students’ competence in clinical placement and to identify recommendations for future assessment methods. Background The purpose of postgraduate critical care nursing education is to educate professional, competent and caring critical care nurses and high-quality assessment strategies in clinical placement are of most importance. Design An integrative review following Whittemore and Knafl’s framework and Prisma 2020 guidelines for systematic reviews. Methods Systematic searches were performed in June 2020 with an update in April 2021 using the following: Academic Search Premier, British Nursing Index, CINAHL, MEDLINE, SveMed+, Web of Science and the Joanna Briggs Institute databases. The systematic literature search and hand search yielded 380 studies. After screening and checking for eligibility, fifteen studies published between 2005 and 2020 were included in this review. The included studies were critically appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool for empirical studies and the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tool for literature reviews. Results Four qualitative, six quantitative, three mixed-methods and two literature review studies were included in this review. We identified that competence in postgraduate critical care nursing is a multidimensional concept and it is recommended to use a combination of assessment methods like self-assessment, observation and mentor evaluation. It is necessary to have discussions and reflections between the student, preceptor and lecturer, as well as written self- and mentor evaluation to provide formative and summative feedback to the students. The need to provide consistency and objectivity resulted in the development of competency assessment tools and they were mostly developed and validated as a collaboration between clinical sites and educational institutions. Most of the assessment tools consisted of domains reflecting holistic nursing, including both technical and non-technical skills. Domains reflecting evidence-based nursing practice were less common. Conclusions We need valid and reliable instruments to assess postgraduate critical care nursing student’s competence in placement. Innovation and further research regarding effective and accessible assessment methods, such as digital assessment tools, are needed to meet future needs. This may also stimulate collaboration to improve the international inconsistency in critical care nursing educations. We should be working towards common, international educational competence descriptions and assessment tools that are in line with the ever-changing critical care environment, including holistic nursing and continuous learning.publishedVersio

Ontology selection: ontology evaluation on the real Semantic Web

The increasing number of ontologies on the Web and the appearance of large scale ontology repositories has brought the topic of ontology selection in the focus of the semantic web research agenda. Our view is that ontology evaluation is core to ontology selection and that, because ontology selection is performed in an open Web environment, it brings new challenges to ontology evaluation. Unfortunately, current research regards ontology selection and evaluation as two separate topics. Our goal in this paper is to explore how these two tasks relate. In particular, we are interested to get a better understanding of the ontology selection task and filter out the challenges that it brings to ontology evaluation. We discuss requirements posed by the open Web environment on ontology selection, we overview existing work on selection and point out future directions.
