Efficient Two-Stage Group Testing Algorithms for Genetic Screening

Efficient two-stage group testing algorithms that are particularly suited for rapid and less-expensive DNA library screening and other large scale biological group testing efforts are investigated in this paper. The main focus is on novel combinatorial constructions in order to minimize the number of individual tests at the second stage of a two-stage disjunctive testing procedure. Building on recent work by Levenshtein (2003) and Tonchev (2008), several new infinite classes of such combinatorial designs are presented.Comment: 14 pages; to appear in "Algorithmica". Harmonic cubic homogeneous polynomials such that the norm-squared of the Hessian is a multiple of the Euclidean quadratic form

There is considered the problem of describing up to linear conformal equivalence those harmonic cubic homogeneous polynomials for which the squared-norm of the Hessian is a nonzero multiple of the quadratic form defining the Euclidean metric. Solutions are constructed in all dimensions and solutions are classified in dimension at most 44. Techniques are given for determining when two solutions are linearly conformally inequivalent.Comment: v3. Typos correcte

    Quartic Curves and Their Bitangents

A smooth quartic curve in the complex projective plane has 36 inequivalent representations as a symmetric determinant of linear forms and 63 representations as a sum of three squares. These correspond to Cayley octads and Steiner complexes respectively. We present exact algorithms for computing these objects from the 28 bitangents. This expresses Vinnikov quartics as spectrahedra and positive quartics as Gram matrices. We explore the geometry of Gram spectrahedra and we find equations for the variety of Cayley octads. Interwoven is an exposition of much of the 19th century theory of plane quartics.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figures, added references, fixed theorems 4.3 and 7.8, other minor change
