Multiuser Switched Diversity Scheduling Schemes
Multiuser switched-diversity scheduling schemes were recently proposed in
order to overcome the heavy feedback requirements of conventional opportunistic
scheduling schemes by applying a threshold-based, distributed, and ordered
scheduling mechanism. The main idea behind these schemes is that slight
reduction in the prospected multiuser diversity gains is an acceptable
trade-off for great savings in terms of required channel-state-information
feedback messages. In this work, we characterize the achievable rate region of
multiuser switched diversity systems and compare it with the rate region of
full feedback multiuser diversity systems. We propose also a novel proportional
fair multiuser switched-based scheduling scheme and we demonstrate that it can
be optimized using a practical and distributed method to obtain the feedback
thresholds. We finally demonstrate by numerical examples that
switched-diversity scheduling schemes operate within 0.3 bits/sec/Hz from the
ultimate network capacity of full feedback systems in Rayleigh fading

Hierarchical Radio Resource Optimization for Heterogeneous Networks with Enhanced Inter-cell Interference Coordination (eICIC)
Interference is a major performance bottleneck in Heterogeneous Network
(HetNet) due to its multi-tier topological structure. We propose almost blank
resource block (ABRB) for interference control in HetNet. When an ABRB is
scheduled in a macro BS, a resource block (RB) with blank payload is
transmitted and this eliminates the interference from this macro BS to the pico
BSs. We study a two timescale hierarchical radio resource management (RRM)
scheme for HetNet with dynamic ABRB control. The long term controls, such as
dynamic ABRB, are adaptive to the large scale fading at a RRM server for
co-Tier and cross-Tier interference control. The short term control (user
scheduling) is adaptive to the local channel state information within each BS
to exploit the multi-user diversity. The two timescale optimization problem is
challenging due to the exponentially large solution space. We exploit the
sparsity in the interference graph of the HetNet topology and derive structural
properties for the optimal ABRB control. Based on that, we propose a two
timescale alternative optimization solution for the user scheduling and ABRB
control. The solution has low complexity and is asymptotically optimal at high
SNR. Simulations show that the proposed solution has significant gain over

Fairness in overloaded parallel queues
Maximizing throughput for heterogeneous parallel server queues has received
quite a bit of attention from the research community and the stability region
for such systems is well understood. However, many real-world systems have
periods where they are temporarily overloaded. Under such scenarios, the
unstable queues often starve limited resources. This work examines what happens
during periods of temporary overload. Specifically, we look at how to fairly
distribute stress. We explore the dynamics of the queue workloads under the
MaxWeight scheduling policy during long periods of stress and discuss how to
tune this policy in order to achieve a target fairness ratio across these
workloads
Ultra Dense Small Cell Networks: Turning Density into Energy Efficiency
In this paper, a novel approach for joint power control and user scheduling
is proposed for optimizing energy efficiency (EE), in terms of bits per unit
energy, in ultra dense small cell networks (UDNs). Due to severe coupling in
interference, this problem is formulated as a dynamic stochastic game (DSG)
between small cell base stations (SBSs). This game enables to capture the
dynamics of both the queues and channel states of the system. To solve this
game, assuming a large homogeneous UDN deployment, the problem is cast as a
mean-field game (MFG) in which the MFG equilibrium is analyzed with the aid of
low-complexity tractable partial differential equations. Exploiting the
stochastic nature of the problem, user scheduling is formulated as a stochastic
optimization problem and solved using the drift plus penalty (DPP) approach in
the framework of Lyapunov optimization. Remarkably, it is shown that by weaving
notions from Lyapunov optimization and mean-field theory, the proposed solution
yields an equilibrium control policy per SBS which maximizes the network
utility while ensuring users' quality-of-service. Simulation results show that
the proposed approach achieves up to 70.7% gains in EE and 99.5% reductions in
the network's outage probabilities compared to a baseline model which focuses
on improving EE while attempting to satisfy the users' instantaneous

Fundamental Limits in MIMO Broadcast Channels
This paper studies the fundamental limits of MIMO broadcast channels from a high level, determining the sum-rate capacity of the system as a function of system paramaters, such as the number of transmit antennas, the number of users, the number of receive antennas, and the total transmit power. The crucial role of channel state information at the transmitter is emphasized, as well as the emergence of opportunistic transmission schemes. The effects of channel estimation errors, training, and spatial correlation are studied, as well as issues related to fairness, delay and differentiated rate scheduling
Analysis of sequencing and scheduling methods for arrival traffic
The air traffic control subsystem that performs scheduling is discussed. The function of the scheduling algorithms is to plan automatically the most efficient landing order and to assign optimally spaced landing times to all arrivals. Several important scheduling algorithms are described and the statistical performance of the scheduling algorithms is examined. Scheduling brings order to an arrival sequence for aircraft. First-come-first-served scheduling (FCFS) establishes a fair order, based on estimated times of arrival, and determines proper separations. Because of the randomness of the traffic, gaps will remain in the scheduled sequence of aircraft. These gaps are filled, or partially filled, by time-advancing the leading aircraft after a gap while still preserving the FCFS order. Tightly scheduled groups of aircraft remain with a mix of heavy and large aircraft. Separation requirements differ for different types of aircraft trailing each other. Advantage is taken of this fact through mild reordering of the traffic, thus shortening the groups and reducing average delays. Actual delays for different samples with the same statistical parameters vary widely, especially for heavy traffic
