    Applying model predictive control to power system frequency control

    Model predictive control (MPC) is investigated as a control method which may offer advantages in frequency control of power systems than the control methods applied today, especially in presence of increased renewable energy penetration. The MPC includes constraints on both generation amount and generation rate of change, and it is tested on a one-area system. The proposed MPC is tested against a conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller, and simulations show that the MPC improves frequency deviation and control performance. © 2013 IEEE

    A renewable energy source plays an important role in electricity generation. Various renewable energy sources like wind, solar, geothermal, ocean thermal, and biomass can be used for generation of electricity and for meeting our daily energy needs. Energy from the sun is the best option for electricity generation as it is available everywhere and is free to harness. On an average the sunshine hour in Malaysia is about eight hours annually also the sun shine shines in Malaysia for about nine months in a year. Electricity from the sun can be generated through the solar photovoltaic modules (SPV). The SPV comes in various power output to meet the load requirement. Maximization of power from a solar photo voltaic module (SPV) is of special interest as the efficiency of the SPV module is very low. A peak power tracker is used for extracting the maximum power from the SPV module. The present work describes the potential system benefits of simple tracking solar system using stepper motor and light sensor. This method increases power collection efficiency by developing a device that tracks the sun to keep the panel at the right angle to its rays. A solar tracking system is designed, implemented and experimentally tested. The design details and the experimental results are shown

    Tilt Integral Derivative Controller Optimized by Battle Royale Optimization for Wind Generator Connected to Grid

    Globally the countries are focusing on reducing the carbon footprint leading to a greater effort for electrical energy generation by renewable energy sources, particularly wind. The wind turbines are invariably using doubly fed asynchronous generator. In this paper a controller has been designed for a doubly fed induction motor. The proposed Tilt Integral Derivate controller for was compared with commonly used PI, PID controllers. Several optimization algorithms were used for tuning of controllers and the best one was selected for each type of controller. The controller has been optimized using battlefield optimization. It had been compared with proportional integral controller, fractional order proportional integral derivative controller. Other controllers were optimized using meta heuristic algorithms. The controller enhanced the system response in terms of settling time, rise time and other parameters. The Tilt controller gave the overall superior performance in terms of parameters like rise time, settling time, settling minimum, peak, and peak time. The results were obtained using MATLAB.
