    An Adaptive Modular Redundancy Technique to Self-regulate Availability, Area, and Energy Consumption in Mission-critical Applications

    As reconfigurable devices\u27 capacities and the complexity of applications that use them increase, the need for self-reliance of deployed systems becomes increasingly prominent. A Sustainable Modular Adaptive Redundancy Technique (SMART) composed of a dual-layered organic system is proposed, analyzed, implemented, and experimentally evaluated. SMART relies upon a variety of self-regulating properties to control availability, energy consumption, and area used, in dynamically-changing environments that require high degree of adaptation. The hardware layer is implemented on a Xilinx Virtex-4 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to provide self-repair using a novel approach called a Reconfigurable Adaptive Redundancy System (RARS). The software layer supervises the organic activities within the FPGA and extends the self-healing capabilities through application-independent, intrinsic, evolutionary repair techniques to leverage the benefits of dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (PR). A SMART prototype is evaluated using a Sobel edge detection application. This prototype is shown to provide sustainability for stressful occurrences of transient and permanent fault injection procedures while still reducing energy consumption and area requirements. An Organic Genetic Algorithm (OGA) technique is shown capable of consistently repairing hard faults while maintaining correct edge detector outputs, by exploiting spatial redundancy in the reconfigurable hardware. A Monte Carlo driven Continuous Markov Time Chains (CTMC) simulation is conducted to compare SMART\u27s availability to industry-standard Triple Modular Technique (TMR) techniques. Based on nine use cases, parameterized with realistic fault and repair rates acquired from publically available sources, the results indicate that availability is significantly enhanced by the adoption of fast repair techniques targeting aging-related hard-faults. Under harsh environments, SMART is shown to improve system availability from 36.02% with lengthy repair techniques to 98.84% with fast ones. This value increases to five nines (99.9998%) under relatively more favorable conditions. Lastly, SMART is compared to twenty eight standard TMR benchmarks that are generated by the widely-accepted BL-TMR tools. Results show that in seven out of nine use cases, SMART is the recommended technique, with power savings ranging from 22% to 29%, and area savings ranging from 17% to 24%, while still maintaining the same level of availability

    Dynamic partial reconfiguration management for high performance and reliability in FPGAs

    Modern Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are no longer used to implement small “glue logic” circuitries. The high-density of reconfigurable logic resources in today’s FPGAs enable the implementation of large systems in a single chip. FPGAs are highly flexible devices; their functionality can be altered by simply loading a new binary file in their configuration memory. While the flexibility of FPGAs is comparable to General-Purpose Processors (GPPs), in the sense that different functions can be performed using the same hardware, the performance gain that can be achieved using FPGAs can be orders of magnitudes higher as FPGAs offer the ability for customisation of parallel computational architectures. Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR) allows for changing the functionality of certain blocks on the chip while the rest of the FPGA is operational. DPR has sparked the interest of researchers to explore new computational platforms where computational tasks are off-loaded from a main CPU to be executed using dedicated reconfigurable hardware accelerators configured on demand at run-time. By having a battery of custom accelerators which can be swapped in and out of the FPGA at runtime, a higher computational density can be achieved compared to static systems where the accelerators are bound to fixed locations within the chip. Furthermore, the ability of relocating these accelerators across several locations on the chip allows for the implementation of adaptive systems which can mitigate emerging faults in the FPGA chip when operating in harsh environments. By porting the appropriate fault mitigation techniques in such computational platforms, the advantages of FPGAs can be harnessed in different applications in space and military electronics where FPGAs are usually seen as unreliable devices due to their sensitivity to radiation and extreme environmental conditions. In light of the above, this thesis investigates the deployment of DPR as: 1) a method for enhancing performance by efficient exploitation of the FPGA resources, and 2) a method for enhancing the reliability of systems intended to operate in harsh environments. Achieving optimal performance in such systems requires an efficient internal configuration management system to manage the reconfiguration and execution of the reconfigurable modules in the FPGA. In addition, the system needs to support “fault-resilience” features by integrating parameterisable fault detection and recovery capabilities to meet the reliability standard of fault-tolerant applications. This thesis addresses all the design and implementation aspects of an Internal Configuration Manger (ICM) which supports a novel bitstream relocation model to enable the placement of relocatable accelerators across several locations on the FPGA chip. In addition to supporting all the configuration capabilities required to implement a Reconfigurable Operating System (ROS), the proposed ICM also supports the novel multiple-clone configuration technique which allows for cloning several instances of the same hardware accelerator at the same time resulting in much shorter configuration time compared to traditional configuration techniques. A faulttolerant (FT) version of the proposed ICM which supports a comprehensive faultrecovery scheme is also introduced in this thesis. The proposed FT-ICM is designed with a much smaller area footprint compared to Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) hardening techniques while keeping a comparable level of fault-resilience. The capabilities of the proposed ICM system are demonstrated with two novel applications. The first application demonstrates a proof-of-concept reliable FPGA server solution used for executing encryption/decryption queries. The proposed server deploys bitstream relocation and modular redundancy to mitigate both permanent and transient faults in the device. It also deploys a novel Built-In Self- Test (BIST) diagnosis scheme, specifically designed to detect emerging permanent faults in the system at run-time. The second application is a data mining application where DPR is used to increase the computational density of a system used to implement the Frequent Itemset Mining (FIM) problem

    An Error-Detection and Self-Repairing Method for Dynamically and Partially Reconfigurable Systems

    Reconfigurable systems are gaining an increasing interest in the domain of safety-critical applications, for example in the space and avionic domains. In fact, the capability of reconfiguring the system during run-time execution and the high computational power of modern Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) make these devices suitable for intensive data processing tasks. Moreover, such systems must also guarantee the abilities of self-awareness, self-diagnosis and self-repair in order to cope with errors due to the harsh conditions typically existing in some environments. In this paper we propose a selfrepairing method for partially and dynamically reconfigurable systems applied at a fine-grain granularity level. Our method is able to detect, correct and recover errors using the run-time capabilities offered by modern SRAM-based FPGAs. Fault injection campaigns have been executed on a dynamically reconfigurable system embedding a number of benchmark circuits. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves full detection of single and multiple errors, while significantly improving the system availability with respect to traditional error detection and correction methods

    Remote dynamic partial reconfiguration: A threat to Internet-of-Things and embedded security applications

    The advent of the Internet of Things has motivated the use of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices with Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR) capabilities for dynamic non-invasive modifications to circuits implemented on the FPGA. In particular, the ability to perform DPR over the network is essential in the context of a growing number of Internet of Things (IoT)-based and embedded security applications. However, the use of remote DPR brings with it a number of security threats that could lead to potentially catastrophic consequences in practical scenarios. In this paper, we demonstrate four examples where the remote DPR capability of the FPGA may be exploited by an adversary to launch Hardware Trojan Horse (HTH) attacks on commonly used security applications. We substantiate the threat by demonstrating remotely-launched attacks on Xilinx FPGA-based hardware implementations of a cryptographic algorithm, a true random number generator, and two processor-based security applications - namely, a software implementation of a cryptographic algorithm and a cash dispensing scheme. The attacks are launched by on-the-fly transfer of malicious FPGA configuration bitstreams over an Ethernet connection to perform DPR and leak sensitive information. Finally, we comment on plausible countermeasures to prevent such attack

    Autonomous Recovery Of Reconfigurable Logic Devices Using Priority Escalation Of Slack

    Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices offer a suitable platform for survivable hardware architectures in mission-critical systems. In this dissertation, active dynamic redundancy-based fault-handling techniques are proposed which exploit the dynamic partial reconfiguration capability of SRAM-based FPGAs. Self-adaptation is realized by employing reconfiguration in detection, diagnosis, and recovery phases. To extend these concepts to semiconductor aging and process variation in the deep submicron era, resilient adaptable processing systems are sought to maintain quality and throughput requirements despite the vulnerabilities of the underlying computational devices. A new approach to autonomous fault-handling which addresses these goals is developed using only a uniplex hardware arrangement. It operates by observing a health metric to achieve Fault Demotion using Recon- figurable Slack (FaDReS). Here an autonomous fault isolation scheme is employed which neither requires test vectors nor suspends the computational throughput, but instead observes the value of a health metric based on runtime input. The deterministic flow of the fault isolation scheme guarantees success in a bounded number of reconfigurations of the FPGA fabric. FaDReS is then extended to the Priority Using Resource Escalation (PURE) online redundancy scheme which considers fault-isolation latency and throughput trade-offs under a dynamic spare arrangement. While deep-submicron designs introduce new challenges, use of adaptive techniques are seen to provide several promising avenues for improving resilience. The scheme developed is demonstrated by hardware design of various signal processing circuits and their implementation on a Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGA device. These include a Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) core, Motion Estimation (ME) engine, Finite Impulse Response (FIR) Filter, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) blocks in addition to MCNC benchmark circuits. A iii significant reduction in power consumption is achieved ranging from 83% for low motion-activity scenes to 12.5% for high motion activity video scenes in a novel ME engine configuration. For a typical benchmark video sequence, PURE is shown to maintain a PSNR baseline near 32dB. The diagnosability, reconfiguration latency, and resource overhead of each approach is analyzed. Compared to previous alternatives, PURE maintains a PSNR within a difference of 4.02dB to 6.67dB from the fault-free baseline by escalating healthy resources to higher-priority signal processing functions. The results indicate the benefits of priority-aware resiliency over conventional redundancy approaches in terms of fault-recovery, power consumption, and resource-area requirements. Together, these provide a broad range of strategies to achieve autonomous recovery of reconfigurable logic devices under a variety of constraints, operating conditions, and optimization criteria

    FPGA structures for high speed and low overhead dynamic circuit specialization

    A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a programmable digital electronic chip. The FPGA does not come with a predefined function from the manufacturer; instead, the developer has to define its function through implementing a digital circuit on the FPGA resources. The functionality of the FPGA can be reprogrammed as desired and hence the name “field programmable”. FPGAs are useful in small volume digital electronic products as the design of a digital custom chip is expensive. Changing the FPGA (also called configuring it) is done by changing the configuration data (in the form of bitstreams) that defines the FPGA functionality. These bitstreams are stored in a memory of the FPGA called configuration memory. The SRAM cells of LookUp Tables (LUTs), Block Random Access Memories (BRAMs) and DSP blocks together form the configuration memory of an FPGA. The configuration data can be modified according to the user’s needs to implement the user-defined hardware. The simplest way to program the configuration memory is to download the bitstreams using a JTAG interface. However, modern techniques such as Partial Reconfiguration (PR) enable us to configure a part in the configuration memory with partial bitstreams during run-time. The reconfiguration is achieved by swapping in partial bitstreams into the configuration memory via a configuration interface called Internal Configuration Access Port (ICAP). The ICAP is a hardware primitive (macro) present in the FPGA used to access the configuration memory internally by an embedded processor. The reconfiguration technique adds flexibility to use specialized ci rcuits that are more compact and more efficient t han t heir b ulky c ounterparts. An example of such an implementation is the use of specialized multipliers instead of big generic multipliers in an FIR implementation with constant coefficients. To specialize these circuits and reconfigure during the run-time, researchers at the HES group proposed the novel technique called parameterized reconfiguration that can be used to efficiently and automatically implement Dynamic Circuit Specialization (DCS) that is built on top of the Partial Reconfiguration method. It uses the run-time reconfiguration technique that is tailored to implement a parameterized design. An application is said to be parameterized if some of its input values change much less frequently than the rest. These inputs are called parameters. Instead of implementing these parameters as regular inputs, in DCS these inputs are implemented as constants, and the application is optimized for the constants. For every change in parameter values, the design is re-optimized (specialized) during run-time and implemented by reconfiguring the optimized design for a new set of parameters. In DCS, the bitstreams of the parameterized design are expressed as Boolean functions of the parameters. For every infrequent change in parameters, a specialized FPGA configuration is generated by evaluating the corresponding Boolean functions, and the FPGA is reconfigured with the specialized configuration. A detailed study of overheads of DCS and providing suitable solutions with appropriate custom FPGA structures is the primary goal of the dissertation. I also suggest different improvements to the FPGA configuration memory architecture. After offering the custom FPGA structures, I investigated the role of DCS on FPGA overlays and the use of custom FPGA structures that help to reduce the overheads of DCS on FPGA overlays. By doing so, I hope I can convince the developer to use DCS (which now comes with minimal costs) in real-world applications. I start the investigations of overheads of DCS by implementing an adaptive FIR filter (using the DCS technique) on three different Xilinx FPGA platforms: Virtex-II Pro, Virtex-5, and Zynq-SoC. The study of how DCS behaves and what is its overhead in the evolution of the three FPGA platforms is the non-trivial basis to discover the costs of DCS. After that, I propose custom FPGA structures (reconfiguration controllers and reconfiguration drivers) to reduce the main overhead (reconfiguration time) of DCS. These structures not only reduce the reconfiguration time but also help curbing the power hungry part of the DCS system. After these chapters, I study the role of DCS on FPGA overlays. I investigate the effect of the proposed FPGA structures on Virtual-Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Arrays (VCGRAs). I classify the VCGRA implementations into three types: the conventional VCGRA, partially parameterized VCGRA and fully parameterized VCGRA depending upon the level of parameterization. I have designed two variants of VCGRA grids for HPC image processing applications, namely, the MAC grid and Pixie. Finally, I try to tackle the reconfiguration time overhead at the hardware level of the FPGA by customizing the FPGA configuration memory architecture. In this part of my research, I propose to use a parallel memory structure to improve the reconfiguration time of DCS drastically. However, this improvement comes with a significant overhead of hardware resources which will need to be solved in future research on commercial FPGA configuration memory architectures

    High-level synthesis of triple modular redundant FPGA circuits with energy efficient error recovery mechanisms

    There is a growing interest in deploying commercial SRAM-based Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) circuits in space due to their low cost, reconfigurability, high logic capacity and rich I/O interfaces. However, their configuration memory (CM) is vulnerable to ionising radiation which raises the need for effective fault-tolerant design techniques. This thesis provides the following contributions to mitigate the negative effects of soft errors in SRAM FPGA circuits. Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) with periodic CM scrubbing or Module-based CM error recovery (MER) are popular techniques for mitigating soft errors in FPGA circuits. However, this thesis shows that MER does not recover CM soft errors in logic instantiated outside the reconfigurable regions of TMR modules. To address this limitation, a hybrid error recovery mechanism, namely FMER, is proposed. FMER uses selective periodic scrubbing and MER to recover CM soft errors inside and outside the reconfigurable regions of TMR modules, respectively. Experimental results indicate that TMR circuits with FMER achieve higher dependability with less energy consumption than those using periodic scrubbing or MER alone. An imperative component of MER and FMER is the reconfiguration control network (RCN) that transfers the minority reports of TMR components, i.e., which, if any, TMR module needs recovery, to the FPGA's reconfiguration controller (RC). Although several reliable RCs have been proposed, a study of reliable RCNs has not been previously reported. This thesis fills this research gap, by proposing a technique that transfers the circuit's minority reports to the RC via the configuration-layer of the FPGA. This reduces the resource utilisation of the RCN and therefore its failure rate. Results show that the proposed RCN achieves higher reliability than alternative RCN architectures reported in the literature. The last contribution of this thesis is a high-level synthesis (HLS) tool, namely TLegUp, developed within the LegUp HLS framework. TLegUp triplicates Xilinx 7-series FPGA circuits during HLS rather than during the register-transfer level pre- or post-synthesis flow stage, as existing computer-aided design tools do. Results show that TLegUp can generate non-partitioned TMR circuits with 500x less soft error sensitivity than non-triplicated functional equivalent baseline circuits, while utilising 3-4x more resources and having 11% lower frequency
