    Benefits from a multi-receiver architecture for GNSS precise positioning

    Precise positioning with a stand-alone GPS receiver or using differential corrections is known to be strongly degraded in an urban or sub-urban environment due to frequent signal masking, strong multipath effect, frequent cycle slips on carrier phase, etc. The objective of this Ph.D. thesis is to explore the possibility of achieving precise positioning with a low-cost architecture using multiple installed low-cost single-frequency receivers with known geometry whose one of them is RTK positioned w.r.t an external reference receiver. This setup is thought to enable vehicle attitude determination and RTK performance amelioration. In this thesis, we firstly proposed a method that includes an array of receivers with known geometry to enhance the performance of the RTK in different environments. Taking advantage of the attitude information and the known geometry of the installed array of receivers, the improvement of some internal steps of RTK w.r.t an external reference receiver can be achieved. The navigation module to be implemented in this work is an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). The performance of a proposed two-receiver navigation architecture is then studied to quantify the improvements brought by the measurement redundancy. This concept is firstly tested on a simulator in order to validate the proposed algorithm and to give a reference result of our multi-receiver system’s performance. The pseudorange measurements and carrier phase measurements mathematical models are implemented in a realistic simulator. Different scenarios are conducted, including varying the distance between the 2 antennas of the receiver array, the satellite constellation geometry, and the amplitude of the noise measurement, in order to determine the influence of the use of an array of receivers. The simulation results show that our multi-receiver RTK system w.r.t an external reference receiver is more robust to noise and degraded satellite geometry, in terms of ambiguity fixing rate, and gets a better position accuracy under the same conditions when compared with the single receiver system. Additionally, our method achieves a relatively accurate estimation of the attitude of the vehicle which provides additional information beyond the positioning. In order to optimize our processing, the correlation of the measurement errors affecting observations taken by our array of receivers has been determined. Then, the performance of our real-time single frequency cycle-slip detection and repair algorithm has been assessed. These two investigations yielded important information so as to tune our Kalman Filter. The results obtained from the simulation made us eager to use actual data to verify and improve our multi-receiver RTK and attitude system. Tests based on real data collected around Toulouse, France, are used to test the performance of the whole methodology, where different scenarios are conducted, including varying the distance between the 2 antennas of the receiver array as well as the environmental conditions (open sky, suburban, and constrained urban environments). The thesis also tried to take advantage of a dual GNSS constellation, GPS and Galileo, to further strengthen the position solution and the reliable use of carrier phase measurements. The results show that our multi-receiver RTK system is more robust to degraded GNSS environments. Our experiments correlate favorably with our previous simulation results and further support the idea of using an array of receivers with known geometry to improve the RTK performance

    3D Reconstruction of Indoor Corridor Models Using Single Imagery and Video Sequences

    In recent years, 3D indoor modeling has gained more attention due to its role in decision-making process of maintaining the status and managing the security of building indoor spaces. In this thesis, the problem of continuous indoor corridor space modeling has been tackled through two approaches. The first approach develops a modeling method based on middle-level perceptual organization. The second approach develops a visual Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) system with model-based loop closure. In the first approach, the image space was searched for a corridor layout that can be converted into a geometrically accurate 3D model. Manhattan rule assumption was adopted, and indoor corridor layout hypotheses were generated through a random rule-based intersection of image physical line segments and virtual rays of orthogonal vanishing points. Volumetric reasoning, correspondences to physical edges, orientation map and geometric context of an image are all considered for scoring layout hypotheses. This approach provides physically plausible solutions while facing objects or occlusions in a corridor scene. In the second approach, Layout SLAM is introduced. Layout SLAM performs camera localization while maps layout corners and normal point features in 3D space. Here, a new feature matching cost function was proposed considering both local and global context information. In addition, a rotation compensation variable makes Layout SLAM robust against cameras orientation errors accumulations. Moreover, layout model matching of keyframes insures accurate loop closures that prevent miss-association of newly visited landmarks to previously visited scene parts. The comparison of generated single image-based 3D models to ground truth models showed that average ratio differences in widths, heights and lengths were 1.8%, 3.7% and 19.2% respectively. Moreover, Layout SLAM performed with the maximum absolute trajectory error of 2.4m in position and 8.2 degree in orientation for approximately 318m path on RAWSEEDS data set. Loop closing was strongly performed for Layout SLAM and provided 3D indoor corridor layouts with less than 1.05m displacement errors in length and less than 20cm in width and height for approximately 315m path on York University data set.     Three-Dimensional Reconstruction of Braided River Morphology and Morphodynamics with Structure-from-Motion Photogrammetry

    PhDThe recent emergence of Structure-from-Motion Photogrammetry (SfM) has created a cost-effective alternative to conventional laser scanning for the production of high-resolution topographic datasets. There has been an explosion of applications of SfM within the geomorphological community in recent years, however, the focus of these has largely been small-scale (102 – 103 m2), building on innovations in low altitude Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). This thesis examines the potential to extend the scope of SfM photogrammetry in order to quantify of landscape scale processes. This is examined through repeat surveys of a ~35 km2 reach of the Dart River, New Zealand. An initial SfM survey of this reach was conducted in April 2014, following a large landslide at the Slipstream debris fan. Validation of the resulting digital elevation models using Independent Control Point's (ICPs) suggested encouraging results, however benchmarking the survey against a long-range laser scanned surface indicated the presence of significant systematic errors associated with inaccurate estimation of the SfM bundle adjustment. Using a combination of scaled laboratory field experiments, this research aimed to develop and test photogrammetric data collection and modelling strategies to enhance modelling of 3D scene structure using limited constraints. A repeat survey in 2015 provided an opportunity to evaluate a new survey strategy, incorporating a convergent camera network and a priori measurement of camera pose. This resulted in halving of mean checkpoint residuals and a reduction in systematic error. The models produced for both 2014 and 2015 were compared using a DEM differencing (DoD) methodology to assess the applicability of wide-area SfM models for the analysis of geomorphic change detection. The systematic errors within the 2014 model confound reliable change detection, although strategies to correlate the two surveys and measure the residual change show promise. The future use of SfM over broad landscape scales has significant potential, however, this will require robust data collection and modelling strategies and improved error modelling to increase user confidence.This work has been supported by a Natural Environmental Research Council studentship (Grant number NE/L501797/

    Shortest Route at Dynamic Location with Node Combination-Dijkstra Algorithm

    Abstract— Online transportation has become a basic requirement of the general public in support of all activities to go to work, school or vacation to the sights. Public transportation services compete to provide the best service so that consumers feel comfortable using the services offered, so that all activities are noticed, one of them is the search for the shortest route in picking the buyer or delivering to the destination. Node Combination method can minimize memory usage and this methode is more optimal when compared to A* and Ant Colony in the shortest route search like Dijkstra algorithm, but can’t store the history node that has been passed. Therefore, using node combination algorithm is very good in searching the shortest distance is not the shortest route. This paper is structured to modify the node combination algorithm to solve the problem of finding the shortest route at the dynamic location obtained from the transport fleet by displaying the nodes that have the shortest distance and will be implemented in the geographic information system in the form of map to facilitate the use of the system.
