    Decision-making: a laboratory-based case study in conceptual design

    The engineering design process may be seen as a series of interrelated operations that are driven by decisions: each operation is carried out as the consequence of an associated decision. Hence, an effective design process relies heavily upon effective decision-making. As a consequence, supporting decision-making may be a significant means for achieving design process improvements.     Similarity-Based Models of Word Cooccurrence Probabilities

    In many applications of natural language processing (NLP) it is necessary to determine the likelihood of a given word combination. For example, a speech recognizer may need to determine which of the two word combinations ``eat a peach'' and ``eat a beach'' is more likely. Statistical NLP methods determine the likelihood of a word combination from its frequency in a training corpus. However, the nature of language is such that many word combinations are infrequent and do not occur in any given corpus. In this work we propose a method for estimating the probability of such previously unseen word combinations using available information on ``most similar'' words. We describe probabilistic word association models based on distributional word similarity, and apply them to two tasks, language modeling and pseudo-word disambiguation. In the language modeling task, a similarity-based model is used to improve probability estimates for unseen bigrams in a back-off language model. The similarity-based method yields a 20% perplexity improvement in the prediction of unseen bigrams and statistically significant reductions in speech-recognition error. We also compare four similarity-based estimation methods against back-off and maximum-likelihood estimation methods on a pseudo-word sense disambiguation task in which we controlled for both unigram and bigram frequency to avoid giving too much weight to easy-to-disambiguate high-frequency configurations.     Learning of Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Systems using Simulated Annealing.

    This thesis reports the work of using simulated annealing to design more efficient fuzzy logic systems to model problems with associated uncertainties. Simulated annealing is used within this work as a method for learning the best configurations of type-1 and type-2 fuzzy logic systems to maximise their modelling ability. Therefore, it presents the combination of simulated annealing with three models, type-1 fuzzy logic systems, interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems and general type-2 fuzzy logic systems to model four bench-mark problems including real-world problems. These problems are: noise-free Mackey-Glass time series forecasting, noisy Mackey-Glass time series forecasting and two real world problems which are: the estimation of the low voltage electrical line length in rural towns and the estimation of the medium voltage electrical line maintenance cost. The type-1 and type-2 fuzzy logic systems models are compared in their abilities to model uncertainties associated with these problems. Also, issues related to this combination between simulated annealing and fuzzy logic systems including type-2 fuzzy logic systems are discussed. The thesis contributes to knowledge by presenting novel contributions. The first is a novel approach to design interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems using the simulated annealing algorithm. Another novelty is related to the first automatic design of general type-2 fuzzy logic system using the vertical slice representation and a novel method to overcome some parametrisation difficulties when learning general type-2 fuzzy logic systems. The work shows that interval type-2 fuzzy logic systems added more abilities to modelling information and handling uncertainties than type-1 fuzzy logic systems but with a cost of more computations and time. For general type-2 fuzzy logic systems, the clear conclusion that learning the third dimension can add more abilities to modelling is an important advance in type-2 fuzzy logic systems research and should open the doors for more promising research and practical works on using general type-2 fuzzy logic systems to modelling applications despite the more computations associated with it

    Producing Acoustic-Prosodic Entrainment in a Robotic Learning Companion to Build Learner Rapport

    abstract: With advances in automatic speech recognition, spoken dialogue systems are assuming increasingly social roles. There is a growing need for these systems to be socially responsive, capable of building rapport with users. In human-human interactions, rapport is critical to patient-doctor communication, conflict resolution, educational interactions, and social engagement. Rapport between people promotes successful collaboration, motivation, and task success. Dialogue systems which can build rapport with their user may produce similar effects, personalizing interactions to create better outcomes. This dissertation focuses on how dialogue systems can build rapport utilizing acoustic-prosodic entrainment. Acoustic-prosodic entrainment occurs when individuals adapt their acoustic-prosodic features of speech, such as tone of voice or loudness, to one another over the course of a conversation. Correlated with liking and task success, a dialogue system which entrains may enhance rapport. Entrainment, however, is very challenging to model. People entrain on different features in many ways and how to design entrainment to build rapport is unclear. The first goal of this dissertation is to explore how acoustic-prosodic entrainment can be modeled to build rapport. Towards this goal, this work presents a series of studies comparing, evaluating, and iterating on the design of entrainment, motivated and informed by human-human dialogue. These models of entrainment are implemented in the dialogue system of a robotic learning companion. Learning companions are educational agents that engage students socially to increase motivation and facilitate learning. As a learning companion’s ability to be socially responsive increases, so do vital learning outcomes. A second goal of this dissertation is to explore the effects of entrainment on concrete outcomes such as learning in interactions with robotic learning companions. This dissertation results in contributions both technical and theoretical. Technical contributions include a robust and modular dialogue system capable of producing prosodic entrainment and other socially-responsive behavior. One of the first systems of its kind, the results demonstrate that an entraining, social learning companion can positively build rapport and increase learning. This dissertation provides support for exploring phenomena like entrainment to enhance factors such as rapport and learning and provides a platform with which to explore these phenomena in future work.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Computer Science 201

    Development of an Arabic Receptive Proficiency Test Instrument Based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

    This research develops a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)-based Arabic receptive proficiency test instrument at the Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Sheikh Nurjati Cirebon. This study addresses the lack of international standard measures to test Arabic receptive competency, including listening and reading. This work created a CEFR-compliant test instrument that matches Arabic language specifics. The Research and Development (RnD) strategy using the ADDIE modelanalysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluationis applied. The steps include identifying needs, instrument design, feedback-based iterative development, implementation in an authentic setting, and detailed efficacy evaluation. This study found that the instrument is valid, reliable, and effective in testing CEFR-level Arabic receptive proficiency. The instrument considers Arabic's intricacies and complexities to assess receptive performance holistically and contextually. This work enriches Arabic language competency measuring literature and provides a valuable measurement tool for educators and learners, particularly in Islamic education

    Maximum Entropy Models For Natural Language Ambiguity Resolution

    This thesis demonstrates that several important kinds of natural language ambiguities can be resolved to state-of-the-art accuracies using a single statistical modeling technique based on the principle of maximum entropy. We discuss the problems of sentence boundary detection, part-of-speech tagging, prepositional phrase attachment, natural language parsing, and text categorization under the maximum entropy framework. In practice, we have found that maximum entropy models offer the following advantages: State-of-the-art Accuracy: The probability models for all of the tasks discussed perform at or near state-of-the-art accuracies, or outperform competing learning algorithms when trained and tested under similar conditions. Methods which outperform those presented here require much more supervision in the form of additional human involvement or additional supporting resources. Knowledge-Poor Features: The facts used to model the data, or features, are linguistically very simple, or knowledge-poor but yet succeed in approximating complex linguistic relationships. Reusable Software Technology: The mathematics of the maximum entropy framework are essentially independent of any particular task, and a single software implementation can be used for all of the probability models in this thesis. The experiments in this thesis suggest that experimenters can obtain state-of-the-art accuracies on a wide range of natural language tasks, with little task-specific effort, by using maximum entropy probability models

    L'extracció d'informació és l'àrea del processament de llenguatge natural l'objectiu de la qual és l'obtenir dades estructurades a partir de la informació rellevant continguda en fragments textuals. L'extracció d'informació requereix una quantitat considerable de coneixement lingüístic. La especificitat d'aquest coneixement suposa un inconvenient de cara a la portabilitat dels sistemes, ja que un canvi d'idioma, domini o estil té un cost en termes d'esforç humà. Durant dècades, s'han aplicat tècniques d'aprenentatge automàtic per tal de superar aquest coll d'ampolla de portabilitat, reduint progressivament la supervisió humana involucrada. Tanmateix, a mida que augmenta la disponibilitat de grans col·leccions de documents, esdevenen necessàries aproximacions completament nosupervisades per tal d'explotar el coneixement que hi ha en elles. La proposta d'aquesta tesi és la d'incorporar tècniques de clustering a l'adquisició de patrons per a extracció d'informació, per tal de reduir encara més els elements de supervisió involucrats en el procés En particular, el treball se centra en el problema de la detecció de relacions. L'assoliment d'aquest objectiu final ha requerit, en primer lloc, el considerar les diferents estratègies en què aquesta combinació es podia dur a terme; en segon lloc, el desenvolupar o adaptar algorismes de clustering adequats a les nostres necessitats; i en tercer lloc, el disseny de procediments d'adquisició de patrons que incorporessin la informació de clustering. Al final d'aquesta tesi, havíem estat capaços de desenvolupar i implementar una aproximació per a l'aprenentatge de patrons per a detecció de relacions que, utilitzant tècniques de clustering i un mínim de supervisió humana, és competitiu i fins i tot supera altres aproximacions comparables en l'estat de l'art.Information extraction is the natural language processing area whose goal is to obtain structured data from the relevant information contained in textual fragments. Information extraction requires a significant amount of linguistic knowledge. The specificity of such knowledge supposes a drawback on the portability of the systems, as a change of language, domain or style demands a costly human effort. Machine learning techniques have been applied for decades so as to overcome this portability bottleneck¿progressively reducing the amount of involved human supervision. However, as the availability of large document collections increases, completely unsupervised approaches become necessary in order to mine the knowledge contained in them. The proposal of this thesis is to incorporate clustering techniques into pattern learning for information extraction, in order to further reduce the elements of supervision involved in the process. In particular, the work focuses on the problem of relation detection. The achievement of this ultimate goal has required, first, considering the different strategies in which this combination could be carried out; second, developing or adapting clustering algorithms suitable to our needs; and third, devising pattern learning procedures which incorporated clustering information. By the end of this thesis, we had been able to develop and implement an approach for learning of relation detection patterns which, using clustering techniques and minimal human supervision, is competitive and even outperforms other comparable approaches in the state of the art.Postprint (published version

    From Texts to Prerequisites. Identifying and Annotating Propaedeutic Relations in Educational Textual Resources

    openPrerequisite Relations (PRs) are dependency relations established between two distinct concepts expressing which piece(s) of information a student has to learn first in order to understand a certain target concept. Such relations are one of the most fundamental in Education, playing a crucial role not only for what concerns new knowledge acquisition, but also in the novel applications of Artificial Intelligence to distant and e-learning. Indeed, resources annotated with such information could be used to develop automatic systems able to acquire and organize the knowledge embodied in educational resources, possibly fostering educational applications personalized, e.g., on students' needs and prior knowledge. The present thesis discusses the issues and challenges of identifying PRs in educational textual materials with the purpose of building a shared understanding of the relation among the research community. To this aim, we present a methodology for dealing with prerequisite relations as established in educational textual resources which aims at providing a systematic approach for uncovering PRs in textual materials, both when manually annotating and automatically extracting the PRs. The fundamental principles of our methodology guided the development of a novel framework for PR identification which comprises three components, each tackling a different task: (i) an annotation protocol (PREAP), reporting the set of guidelines and recommendations for building PR-annotated resources; (ii) an annotation tool (PRET), supporting the creation of manually annotated datasets reflecting the principles of PREAP; (iii) an automatic PR learning method based on machine learning (PREL). The main novelty of our methodology and framework lies in the fact that we propose to uncover PRs from textual resources relying solely on the content of the instructional material: differently from other works, rather than creating de-contextualised PRs, we acknowledge the presence of a PR between two concepts only if emerging from the way they are presented in the text. By doing so, we anchor relations to the text while modelling the knowledge structure entailed in the resource. As an original contribution of this work, we explore whether linguistic complexity of the text influences the task of manual identification of PRs. To this aim, we investigate the interplay between text and content in educational texts through a crowd-sourcing experiment on concept sequencing. Our methodology values the content of educational materials as it incorporates the evidence acquired from such investigation which suggests that PR recognition is highly influenced by the way in which concepts are introduced in the resource and by the complexity of the texts.
