An empirical investigation on EDI determinants and outcomes in Malaysian industry
Government involvement is the main cause for the EDI acceptance
in Southeast Asian countries (United Nation of Economic and
Social Commission for Asia and Pacific - UNESCAP, 1996). This
is significantly different from the EDI developments in the western
countries in which private sector involvement in EDI is substantial
(UNESCAP, 1996). As an initial step to spur EDI implementation in
private sector, the Malaysian Government has imposed all companies
that engage in international trade to implement EDI by doing
electronic customs declarations through CIS (Customs Information
System) DagangNet. For this, the Government also spent over RM
300 million to fully implement EDI nationwide (Star, 2003 December
3). Nevertheless, such implementation is not successful and it has
been claimed that
âEDI is not yet fully implemented even though it
had been initiated since late 1990s, besides electronic data is also
still not recognized for legal customs declaration purposes even if it
was meant for paperless and electronic customs declarationsâ
(Star,
2003 December 3). To date, there are dual customs declarations, both
electronic and manual, in practices where the sole typical electronic
transaction is registration of the customs form (Jimmy, 2005; Star,
2005 July 11). This is in contrast with electronic customs declarations by other countries such as Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore where
there is a full electronic declaration including electronic payment
for declarations charges (Jimmy, 2005; Star, 2005 July 11; Chau,
2001)
SMEs; Virtual research and development (R&D) teams and new product development: A literature review
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are indeed the engines of global economic growth. Their continued growth is a major subject for the economy and employment of any country. Towards that end, virtual research and development (R&D) could be a viable option to sustain and ease the operations of SMEs. However, literature shows there has not been a great deal of research into the diverse characteristic of virtual R&D teams in SMEs. This article provides a comprehensive literature review on different aspects of virtual R&D teams collected from the reputed publications. The purpose of the literature review is to provide an outline on the structure and dynamics of R&D collaboration in SMEs. Specifying the rationale and relevance of virtual teams, the relationship between virtual R&D team for SMEs and new product development (NPD) has been examined. It concludes with identifying the gaps and feebleness in the existing literature and calls for future research in this area. It is argued to form of virtual R&D team deserves consideration at top level management for venturing into the new product development within SMEs

However, literature shows that virtual R & D teaming in SMEs is still at its infancy. This article provides a comprehensive literature review on different aspects of virtual R & D teams collected from the reputed publications. The purpose of the state-of-the-art literature review is to provide an overview on the structure and dynamics of R & D collaboration in SMEs. Specifying the foundation and importance of virtual teams, the relationship between virtual R & D team and SMEs has been examined. It concludes with the identification of the gaps in the existing literature's and calls for future research. It is argued that setting-up an infrastructure for virtual R & D team in SMEs still requires a large amount of engineering efforts and deserves consideration at top level management
SMEs: ERP or virtual collaboration teams
Small firms are indeed the engines of global economic growth. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play an important role to promote economic development. SMEs in the beginning of implementing new technologies always face capital shortage and need technological assistance. Available ERP systems do not fulfil the specific requirements of Small firms. SMEs has scarce resources and manpower therefore many SMEs don?t have the possessions to buy and operate an ERP System. On the other hand competition and competitiveness of SMEs have to be strengthened. This paper briefly reviews the existing perspectives on virtual teams and their effect on SMEs management. It also discusses the main characteristics of virtual teams and clarifies the differences aspects of virtual team application in SMEs. After outlining some of the main advantages and pitfall of such teams, it concentrates on comparing of ERP and virtual collaborative teams in SMEs. Finally, it provides evidence for the need of ?Software as a Service (SaaS)? where an application is hosted as a service provided to customers across the web for SMEs as an alternative of ERP. Web 2.0 and micro-businesses: An exploratory investigation

Emerald does not grant permission for this article to be further copied/distributed or hosted elsewhere without the express permission from Emerald Group Publishing Limited.This article was chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2013.Purpose â The paper aims to report on an exploratory study into how small businesses use Web 2.0 information and communication technologies (ICT) to work collaboratively with other small businesses. The study had two aims: to investigate the benefits available from the use of Web 2.0 in small business collaborations, and to characterize the different types of such online collaborations.
Design/methodology/approach â The research uses a qualitative case study methodology based on semi-structured interviews with the owner-managers of 12 UK-based small companies in the business services sector who are early adopters of Web 2.0 technologies.
Findings â Benefits from the use of Web 2.0 are categorized as lifestyle benefits, internal operational efficiency, enhanced capability, external communications and enhanced service offerings. A 2Ă2 framework is developed to categorize small business collaborations using the dimensions of the basis for inter-organizational collaboration (control vs cooperation) and the level of Web 2.0 ICT use (simple vs sophisticated).
Research limitations/implications â A small number of firms of similar size, sector and location were studied, which limits generalizability. Nonetheless, the results offer a pointer to the likely future use of Web 2.0 tools by other small businesses.
Practical implications â The research provides evidence of the attraction and potential of Web 2.0 for collaborations between small businesses.
Originality/value â The paper is one of the first to report on use of Web 2.0 ICT in collaborative working between small businesses. It will be of interest to those seeking a better understanding of the potential of Web 2.0 in the small business community.WestFocu

Innovativeness of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Greece: an Empirical Investigation
Economic theories recognize the leading role of innovations in the process of economic growth. Undoubtedly investing in innovation is a challenge for all enterprises operating in the modern highly competitive environment. The role and position of small and medium enterprises is unique and extremely important in this matter. The main objective of this study is to examine the conditions of undertaking innovative activities by SME sector in Greece and the identification of the critical success factors of SMEs in the field of innovation. The analysis used the results of the survey and statistical materials of SME from a sample of 410 respondents. The paper is organized as follows: in the next section we briefly present the importance of SMEs for sustained economic development and the actual development of SMEs growth in Greece. This is followed by the presentation of research methodology and the data sources used in the analysis. The results are presented and discussed in section four. We conclude with study limitations and further opportunities for research

Trade Adjustment Assistance for Firms
The Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) programs were first authorized by Congress in the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, as amended, to help workers and firms adjust to import competition and dislocation caused by trade liberalization. Although overall economic welfare can be increased by trade liberalization, TAA has long been justified on grounds that the government has an obligation to help the âlosersâ of policy-driven trade openings that may cause adjustment problems for firms and workers adversely affected by import competition. TAA programs that cover workers, firms, and farmers aim to âfacilitate efforts by the domestic industry to make a positive adjustment to import competition and provide greater economic and social benefits than costs.â Congress continues to monitor TAA program performance and to periodically reauthorize and amend the governing legislation.
This report discusses the Trade Adjustment Assistance for Firms (TAAF) program, which is administered by the Economic Development Administration (EDA) of the Department of Commerce. The TAAF program assists eligible American companies that have been harmed by increasing imports; this harm is defined by lower domestic sales and employment because of increased imports of similar goods and services. Through the TAAF program, EDA provides technical assistance, on a cost-sharing basis, to help eligible businesses create and implement business recovery plans that may allow them to remain competitive in a dynamic international economy. The TAAF program provides technical assistance through a partnership with a national network of 11 EDA-funded Trade Adjustment Assistance Centers (TAACs)
